Review my homebrew Character: The Succubus?

By kain7th, in Talisman Home Brews

Modeled her after the Enemy in the game and gave her an additional ability. 2rzaxq9.jpg

Not bad, but I have some comments:

1. The picture is slightly too big ;)

2. 3rd and 4th abilities combined can make this character potentially devastating. But then again she has no defenses if other players come after her so mayby it's balanced.

3. You don't have to say that Craft can't get lower than its value, it's in the rules. Also, Craft not craft.

4. Last ability - there are no effects in the game that refer to gender, and I don't see any reason for them to be introduced. Change male to good or neutral maybe?

5. Succubi come from hell. Maybe starting space: Chasm?

Well the gender effect is the whole point i made her to begin with...

but anyways she could be potentially devastating, but if the other players all pick female characters than that one ability is useless. so could be powerful in one game, but weak in another.

Agreed keep away from gender. When you think about it a Succubus will go for both males and females.. Well my idea of one will... Maybe i'm just kinky..

Kain7th....don't listen to these jokers! lol

Seriously though, if you want to do the gender thing, you would need to list all the characters and whether they are "female" or "male". Keep in mind, some characters are going to cause some issues because they are either gender neutral in most fantasy lore. For instance: The troll and ghoul. Even Leprechauns look male but it has never been determined (to my knowledge) they are "male". I remember reading they were descendants of Faeries and outcast.

The other thing is size....The sprite, one could say is female in appearance, but is only a wee one compared to a Succubus.

One area where Uvatha is confused is that Succubus definitely only go for men, but being demons it is believed they could be Gender Amorphous and are actually Succubus when trying to find sperm and Incubus when trying to seduce women and impregnate them with the sperm they took from the man. So in this regard they can change from male to female at least in appearance as they are sterile demons but very seductive in nature.

With all that being said, you can DO the Gender thing but for obvious reasons there are complications since gender is not a part of the game.

Well how nice... well im gonna keep it as it is. Like i said Gender is the whole reason for me making this succubus.

If I ever used her in my games ill just tell the people im playing with who's male or female just to keep things simple.

Sure, it's made for your games and you can use whatever you like.

This particular idea pops up every now and then, for years now, and I never liked it, nor anyone was ever able to convince me it's a good addition to the game.

why not? whats not good about it?

why not? whats not good about it?

You are adding a new keyword to the game that has to be retroactively applied to some/most characters.

And all that for very little benefit.

I just wrote why.

I believe he is trying to say that it is something that could go arbitrarily either way. Not everyone is going to agree which players are female and which are male. What if you grab a different model for the day that is not the same as the card. It is just a discussion piece that not everyone would agree upon. With this in mind, you (and anyone else that would like to try your character out for that matter) are surely well within your reach to make a pre-game decision on sex. Keep in mind though, this ability could cause imbalance if everyone playing is the same sex. We usually try and balance out our characters in a game in regards to your alignment for this very reason.....

Alright, let me elaborate. It's bad because:

1. It forces you to either

- memorize sexes or all characters

- or apply rulings on the fly (what if you later forget and rule differently?)

- or create and print a chart (yay)

2. It creates a new subsystem for only one ability of a single character. It's like making a trinket keyword and putting it only on one card. (actually it's worse because previous point)

3. It can be very easily replaced with another similar system already in the game - the alignment system.

Does that answer your question?

Ok what would you put in its place that still makes it feel like a succubus? Thats what i like, characters to feel like their characters.

For instance i really like the leywalkers teleport ability.. it feels totally different and unique and feels like the character.

Yes. But it is a buzz kill, cause this was the entire point of the character and you crushed it.

Buut in any case. i'll try her out at least in a game or two and see how it goes.

What do you mean I killed it?

Ideas can't be killed, only abandoned. :)

Edited by Bludgeon

Steady on. Just because me and Bludgeon dislike the Gender issue does not mean its a bad Homebrew or you should "kill" abandon it. We are just giving you helpful advice that's all. If you think its all the character is about then keep it as is.

A little op IMO. 7 combined stats with the ability to attack with Craft instead of Strength right out of the gate? And 5 fate on an already op character? I'd say if you kept it at 7 stat points, to lower the starting Fate to 2. Being able to steal a Craft from another player is pretty strong (equal to 7-trophy points at least), so I'd elaborate that the character CANNOT steal items from other players, only Craft, or the potential power of this character is off the charts! And I also agree with everyone else who posted about the female/male ideology and change it to Good aligned; also, ALL THE GOLD is ridiculously op and should be like half the players current gold rounded down, or even 1-gold, and you should add take a Fate in there!

It seems too good on paper but I'm not sure it actually is. Probably on power level of the Celestial.

Still it's a 1 in 6 chance of getting all the gold.

i will probably lower her starting fate however. Also if she's attacked at all by a strength character she's pretty defenseless against them.

Ok lowered Fate to 2, lowered craft to 4.

And she will be, because in order to stay effective she has to wander close to other characters.

She's a glass cannon character. Such characters always look overpowered but in reality usually are not.

Maybe add she loses a life instead of changing alignment as they have done in later expansions, and I would really change the syphoning craft from other characters to syphoning a life to heal (not gain) a life? She can go around using psychic combat to Jack everyone's hard earned craft points, way out of balance IMHO.
