Co-op Expansions vs Road to Legend App

By PHRAETUS, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I know that there's been very little information relating to Road to Legend yet, but I'm wondering if it supersedes the Co-op Expansions?
Has there been any info suggest how the two interact, or if they do?

Could the expansions be added to the app? They are not shown in the screen grab of Expansions, but there does appear to be other pages.

Does the app replace them physically, enabling you to purchase them digitally instead?

Anyone picked up any relevant info elsewhere that's not mentioned in the articles?

They don't interact whatsoever. PoD Coops have their own game-mechanic and while the app borrows heavily from the PoD Coops mechanic wise, in the end it has some fundamental differences:

1.) Turn structure: PoD Coops are like the original game, whereas the app will have alternating turns.

2.) Game structure: PoD Coops are one giant quest, app will come with a campaign with shopping steps in between quests that probably are as short as the normal quests

3.) Acquiring items: PoD Coops only grant you itmes by killing monsters, app has shopping steps in between games and probably no "loot track"

It is precisely this apparent melding of the Co-op mechanics with the "traditional" Campaign mechanics that has me intrigued and anxious to play the app quests. I want more info about how the travel step will work, the game seems like it keeps track of how many weeks have gone by in-game as you go from one location to the next.

If you have played IA then the campaign structure will be very familiar to you, it is a superior format to the traditional Descent format. An evolution, if you will.

You keep saying that, but already many others have told you how you're wrong about it. It is just a different approach, and each one has its ups and downs. Just a matter of tastes.

Nah I prefer to stick with the fact that FFG agrees with me, according to them at Gencon last year anyway, and that is why they chose this format to REPLACE the existing format in a game that was built around it!

You shall all see shortly how much better it is, but the haters will of course never admit they were wrong. :D There really is no comparison, one is right and one is... wrong :D

I don't think people disagree on that point because they are/want to be haters.

I think it's just a matter of opinion.

Even if someone from FFG said it's better doesn't mean all agree on that... and it doesn't mean people playing the game (--> buying it) agree on that.

It's like saying chess is a less valuable game because you don't have as much choices as in Descent 2nd.

But it's just a different game.

I will try the app and see what the game is like with alternating turns but I can't see why everybody has to like the same game. If that's the way the (board-)game industry worked we all would only play descent, because I (-> that's MY opinion) think it's better than the other games.

Also regarding the FFG staff comment about it being better: did you talk about it with a designer of Descent or from FA?

I don't think the same people are responsible for the game/rule design of the two games. (Not sure on that though...)

@FrogTrigger ...

I play both IA and D1e/D2e extensively. I enjoy both games. One set of rules is NOT superior to the other. They are different games, developed with different approaches. Both are enjoyable to play.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion ... as am I (and others for that matter).

This is not mathematics. There is no single correct answer.

the haters will of course never admit they were wrong.

I get he's trying to be funny but this statement is so ironic.

I played IA extensivly and can only say this sytem isn't a clean progression from the Descent turn structure, but has quite it's own strengths and weaknesses.

If you want to talk about this in the terms right/wrong, you should at least pose the correct question and that is: What is good game-design?

It's quite a pitty that there is a nice discussion to be had in this topic, but you show again and again that you are not willing to participate and in return act as if communication is a one way process, where you are the speaker and everyone else should better listen and learn, what a boring stance... but even for that there is a digtial medium. Maybe you should migrate from discussion boards and forums to a blog?

That's a very polite way off saying go back to the SW: IA section of the forums you Troll.

Sorry, must be my gruff inner Dwarf, grumpy for the current lack of mead...
