tomax bren question

By 414taylor, in X-Wing

Please explain his ability. why does his ept get flipped up if it is discarded? very confused.

When you discard a card, you flip it facedown. His ability lets you flip it faceup, bringing it back into play once per round.

If you discard a card twice in a round, like cool hand, then it will be gone permanently since his ability only can be used once per round.

The tournament rules say that when you would discard a card, you flip it face down, so that it's still there to be counted for points, but it's not usable. Tomax Bren flips it back face-up. Essentially, his ability might as well say, "Once per round, when you would discard an EPT, don't discard it."

It means EPTs that are usually a 'Once per game' effect (e.g. Crack Shot; Adrenaline Rush, etc.) can be used every turn of the game. In the game mechanics, when a card is discarded (for whatever reason), you show this by flipping it face down. Flipping it back face-side up demonstrates that the card is "in play" again.

EDIT: Double  !

Discarding in this game is just flipping the card face down. (unless it's a damage card, those have a discard pile. Unless that card is dual sided, then it gets placed underneath the pilot card.) So, the cards that say discard really mean (flip this face down) so after that flipping it face up will bring it back into play. Meaning things like crack shot every attack, or cool hand every time he red manuevers.

That's exactly what it should have said, but they tried to get cutesy with the language on the card and confused the hell out of a lot of people.

Expect an errata/FAQ on discarded cards after Imperial Veterans are released.

Why?

Its already in the rules that when you discard a card you flip it face down... Bren's card is consistent with that.

They changed the tournament rules so that discarded cards are placed under the pilot card - presumably because of Dual Cards - so Bren's wording would no longer make sense.

I'm hoping they caught this before printing, but I somehow doubt it.

There really was no need for any more complex wording than this.

... Tournaments Rules are not the be all & end all

Pg 20 of the Rules Reference (which is the core rules of the game for all game types - of which tournament games is just one!)

When an Upgrade card is discarded, it is flipped facedown. The card is out of play for all purposes except when determining the total squad point cost of the ship to which it was equipped. If an Upgrade card is flipped faceup by a game effect, it returns to play equipped to the same ship

With enough explanation a simple example: adrenaline rush let's you treat a red maneuvre as a white one. Then you flip it. Tomax Bren is the only pilot which is allowed to flip it back up.

You can actually do a continuous streak of speed 5 K-turns! :)

so can the countess and vcx w/ hera

continuous ks aren't special anymore

But they sure are fun! :)

thx for the explanation. I didn't know because I didn't read the tournament rules. I have no interest in playing tournaments.
