Savage Species... and what comes next

By Maelora, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

We could call it:

Narrative Star Wars Roleplaying, NSWR or NSR

Narrative Edition, NE

Narrative Star Wars, NSW

EAFSW could work too (as in Edge Age Force Star Wars)

i think the 3rd one is the better, it's much shorter than the FFGSWRPG but still defines it well.

well if we were going with an acronym, I've been using "FFG SWRPG" for a while now.

Same, I think it's what will actually stick, but it's a bit of a mouthful.

Once you establish that you are talking about FFG SWRPG you can go much shorter without trouble, because you already made it absolute clear what you are talking about. :)

"Edge of the Age of Force" - EotAoF ? ;)

On the original topic: well, Rogue One is on the way and - unlike Episodes VII- IX - it's in the same time period as FFG's RPG. Maybe Disney put additional restraints on them, or FFG delays to avoid discrepancies between the books and new canon, or FFG is busy preparing additional games for release with Rogue One, or...

I'm not worried, all lines are running so well that I don't see a reason to stop for FFG.

Its doubtful that Disney is halting production of books. Its much more likely that books are being delayed due to lack of staffing or money or other issues. Part of the problem was the dock workers strike and that has had long term consequences on book releases.

With the rate of Reprints I doubt it's a lack of money.

Usually with Roleplaying, card companies, and mini companies each expansion, book etc is close to breaking them finacially.

FFG is pretty divested in terms of product, but keep in mind they picked up the L5r license and still have yet to release a single product for that line. Then there is also the need to send all Star Wars products to Disney or Lucasfilm which ever for approval.

Marvel Heroes the computer game has had issues with the approval process on so many fronts that doing graphical fixes for released heroes costumes is a pain to do.

It's likely just a lack of resources. The money seems to be there as they sellout of most product. Thus I find it unlikely that they are breaking even with Star Wars. Considering the number of licences FFG is able to buy I'd imagine that as a company they are overall doing well. But their Star Wars line is huge (as I mentioned earlier). Odds are that they simply just don't have enough people to write for all the lines at the same time and that they likely shuffle people around a bit from one project to the next.

I mean honestly ..... look at how much Star Wars they are producing. No one should be surprised that books are coming slower now that they have mini's, cards, and 3 different RPG lines to put out.

In my opinion, it's fine that they aren't producing books as fast. I'm in school, so I don't have a lot of money.(And I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only one in school.)

I'd much rather FFG take their time and produce a fewer number of quality books than rush out a bunch of product that's not up to their usual standards.

We got enough "product glut" with D&D 3rd and especially 4th editions, thank you very much.

But with new releases spread out a bit more, that gives us time to fully digest the new material, especially the GMs who will need to decide if they're going to allow this new crunch whole-hog or only allow parts of it.

But...but...obsessive-compulsive completionism! I can't even read my favorite book series anymore (Dresden Files) because I learned that there are stories that I don't have!

(Bee-Tee-Dubs, the compulsion war that went on in my head when I was trying to decide whether to track periods in-between announcement and release was epic! The battle between, "Moar data means moar accurate!" and, "It will never be complete; there will always be an empty space...IN YOUR SOUL!" will live on in infamy for generations to come. Clearly, moar data! won out, but I still get a little twitchy whenever I notice the empty spaces in my spreadsheets...)

So, 'Savage Spirits' was announced start of January, and there's been no previews subsequently. We're not even sure of the species or spec skills yet.

How long normally does it take from announcement to release? About 4 months, roughly? Anyway, it's now May and there's nothing on the horizon for anything else in the lines, meaning that we're discussing the movies and Infinite Backpacks for want of anything else game-related to talk about.

Now I'm NOT saying 'the sky is falling!!!' at all.

And I'm not expecting the playtesters to comment obviously. They have dropped hints there is more in the offing.

But there does seem to be a lull. Holding everything back for GenCon maybe?

Or something else afoot? Force Awakens rules-set? 2nd Edition about to be announced?

Feels like... something ... is up, something is going on. I don't know what.

Thoughts?

The 3 separate RPG lines is a lie. There is only one with 3 colors. So, we already know what is next after Savage Spirit: The TFA beginner box and the soldier sourcebook.

You do know they actually make other games then just star wars right?

Warhammer Rpg?

Warhammer 40k Rpg?

End of the world Rpg?

L5R Rpg?

I dont know if you are trolling me or you are serious. Also the L5R rpg is only in your dream.

They own the rights to the L5R RPG, purchased last year. Anyone interested in FFG's entire RPG line is awaiting their announcement of plans for it. I personally don't think it will be this GenCon, but I would expect a Beta just like the SW systems have had. I'm hoping it uses the Narrative dice again since I love them and it's kinda their thing, even if EotW doesn't use it.

Oh I agree. It just appears that if FFG isn't cranking out the product then people get worried that the line is coming to an end.

Oh I know all of this but it's still in your dream for the moment. You dont know if FFG really has plan to make a 5th edition.

Ah ok. Well I think it would be kind of odd to buy an RPG system then do nothing with it. I can imagine an Imperial Assault style game or some board game, possibly a card game as well. But they have to have plans for the RPG department post Star Wars.

They bought the license for the card game first and foremost. The RPG was robably included in the package deal. That doesn't mean FFG have plan for a new RPG.

I've seen L5R fans. We may be better off with no 5th Edition.

Sad to say, I kinda have to agree. I've peeked over at the L5R section of the FFG forums, even made a few remarks. And ain't been back since.

Although, I have to say I really liked how 4th edition worked out, and would be fine if that were the last version of an L5R RPG published. It cleaned up a lot of the problems of the 3rd edition, and while the Great Clans were still on a better tier than everyone else, you could play a Minor Clan or even a Ronin and not be completely hosed in terms of mechanics.

This L5R thing is off topic, but the article that announced FFG's purchase of it did bring up the RPG, and that they were going to work on something .

I'd love to see FFG's take on an L5R RPG. And to your comment, I played a ronin character in the last generation of my friend's L5R campaign who ended up being mistaken for a reincarnation of Miromoto for how well she fought with two swords, so I agree on the mechanics side. I'd be interested in whether or not FFG would use Roll and Keep (no idea if that was sold along with the rights) or some other variation of their narrative dice, but I consider raises to be an important part of L5R and they should be ported over.

(That said, I'm more invested in a possible Netrunner RPG than another iteration of L5R, though I have no reason to assume it's in the works.)

Anyway. To pretend this post is even a little bit on topic, I would say that with the Soldier book being announced for a Q3 release, I'm giving up hope of seeing the Bounty Hunter book at GenCon. It probably won't even be announced until Q3 at the earliest.

Bounty Hunter book will not be the next EotE book announced; I'm 99.99% sure of that (margin of error ~+/-0.01%). We'll get another Region book first, then finish off with the last career book. So for your hopes to come true, we need another Edge announcement before Gen Con, and soon.

EDIT: Wait, sorry, you said you were giving up hope. My bad!

Also, that's good. Which is pretty sad. And that's bad.

I'm being serious.

Its actually kind of a nightmare since I do enjoy the 4th edition.

Its not my fault you only think FFG produces star wars.

OH YEAH, "Shipping Now!" Who called it!

...it may have been incredibly likely, but I'm still excited about it, because I've been waiting for this book for a while!

Well well well. Now I need to pick it up .... since I just created a character in this career.
