Savage Species... and what comes next

By Maelora, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

For those keeping track at home: I do not count the TFA Beginner Box announcement. We are still in a gap in announcements of 119 days and counting.

I'm with you there. (And I think the new Beginner box is a good thing, don't get me wrong...)

But it does at least explain why everything else seems to be on hiatus. Especially as I feared a 2nd edition.

I don't think we need to fear a second edition. I don't think it is going to happen yet.

Savage spirits has been on the boat 30 days now so should be coming off the boat in the next week to 2 weeks. U suspect we will get new announcements in the next couple weeks. I think a region book is the next likely thing by edge and an adventure for Age and F&D. I also see the bounty hunter book for edge coming before the end of the year with Gen Con as being a likely time. This years in Flight should be interesting.

That's IT!! The reason we have a lull right now is because they are printing so many copies of the Bounty Hunter book in preparation for Gen Con. If they did the normal announcement it would completely throw off Absol197's statistics.

More seriously Absol197 if you take the GenCon date (4-7 August) as release date (although you could add a week since usually the releases are early at GenCon) and work backwards with your numbers when would we expect the GenCon product to be announced?

It would already be announced; the average book takes 136.11 days from announcement to release, and August 4, the Thursday in your time-frame, is 91 days away. The shortest book release time so far is 92 days, so if they could guarantee a record-breaking release they could make it by GenCon, but otherwise I don't see it happening.

:(

So no Bounty Hunters at GenCon without some Force Magic, but i guess that 92 days is right on the shortest that they could get the new TFA beginner box there for everyone, thats the best bet for new stuff RPG there then. Unless there's an L5R beta this year that gets pulled out of the hat, but i dont think they have had enought time with that to do that, it's more likely a 2017 beta for 2018 release.

Gen Con often has stuff not announced released. All 3 beta books were released unannounced. As were the NPC cards. The core books.

Actually, only the EotE beta had no prior announcement, due to FFG not having announced they had the RPG license until GenCon itself.

AoR and FaD Betas both had product announcements in advance of the GenCon they were released. Not terribly far in advance (little more than a month or two, enough to start building hype), but there were no surprises that the Beta books were for sale at FFG's booth in the dealer hall.

I'm pretty sure that if we were getting Bounty Hunters at GenCon, we'd have heard of it by now.

The TFA beginner's game? That I would believe. A preview copy of the Bounty Hunter book, like how they had Stay on Target at GenCon before any official word? Maybe, but I consider it unlikely.

Given that the Stay on Target incident hasn't been repeated, I figure the FFG staffers are generally going to be more cautious about ensuring which products get displayed so that there isn't a repeat.

Of course, no telling what will or won't get announced at the In-Flight Report seminar. Maybe we'll get some more RPG-related news there.

We can only hope. They still have plenty left to do in all three lines, so there's a lot of ground to cover.

Honestly, on a non- Star Wars note, I'd like to hear more about the plans for an L5R RPG, or a Netrunner RPG. Really any new RPG developments in general.

In all honesty, I would prefer if they really would work longer on their stuff and increase quality and consistency and a second edition, or better a 1.5 edition with new armor rules, better editing and layout and working into the new book all that faq questions … now that would be something most owners of any of the crb's would buy in a heartbeat. Imagine all basic gear in one a few pages in one large table, instead of being fractures over 20 or so books, imagine the combat tablets and crit tables all in one place, all relevant rules rather in one chapter … imagine FFGSWRPG designed by FFG, but not written by them.

So, in all honesty, they should really take more time and not feel so rushed to release and updated books sound like a good idea, they can even soll them to us, as long as everything stays compatible this is no issue at all.

And it's over! Final total: gap between announcements was in second place overall, worth 124 days, and Age of Rebellion was without an upcoming product for 96 days, also the second-largest gap so far!

I like the look of this - I'm sure some people will complain about the reprint of the Heavy, but I think it fits very well with the Soldier.

EDIT: Interestingly, this is the first announcement on a Tuesday in over two-and-a-half years (973 days, to be precise).

Current estimate (which is very rough) puts Forged in Battle out on 9/22.

Excited that it's a Q3 book, we can at least be sure of 1 more book to by years end! Out of interest what's the smallest gap between announcements and the average gap (I'm sure you mentioned it but search is not helping today)

Smallest gap was the 2 days between Mask of the Pirate Queen and Keeping the Peace. Average so far (not counting the new one that just started :) ) is 55.05 days. That average, however, is skewed by several outliers well above 100 (although as such outliers become more common, they become harder to call outliers, don't they?).

I think of the average currently as being right around 50.

EDIT: It is possible (if unlikely) that we could get another announcement before the end of the week, and it wouldn't even be a record-breaker! Cross your fingers!

are they going to have new gear for exploring type characters? it sounds like they have a super big pile of gear for exploring in that book. But if it is just a reprint of everything in the "enter the unknown" splatbook i'm going to be sad.

How should I know, I'm just the girl who crunches the numbers and predicts when it's going to be released! I don't have amazing precognitive powers or anything!

My guess is that there will be some repeats of gear and tech, but a lot of new aid, too.

Also, bad premonitions have come! Two things are making me think that we're going to be waiting a bit longer: first, the EotE core book hasn't come off the boat yet; it went "On the Boat" a week before Savage Spirits did, so I'm expecting it to come off a week before, too. There's a chance it takes core books a bit longer since they're much bigger, but it's a troubling sign.

Secondly, there's something I've noticed but haven't tracked, so this may be nothing, but it is a pattern that I feel. Often, most books have their "On the Boat" date adjusted about two weeks before they ship. Edge did so this week (it now shows 05/10, when it actually went on the boat 03/30), but Savage Spirits hasn't. Hopefully this is just a weird thing that happens sometimes and not all the time and were still on track for June 2, but there are signs that we might not be :( .

And what a stellar job your doing :)

Fingers crossed for more exploration gear, I'm expecting some big guns for that Executioner and some camouflage gear too. Due to the mention of riding beasts i'm also expecting some kind of re-print of the tack and beast armour from Stay on Target, whether its the same or introduces new versions who knows.

It could be that the first time it gets updated to "On the Boat" is the day its loaded into the containers, when its updated is the actual day the containers get loaded onto the ship (or at least delivered to the port).

It is my hope that with this slight wilderness and outdoorsy vibe that the book has that I'll get my Neti. I have hope ..... not high hopes mind you ....but hope all the same.

Hmm.. good point. The only other book I could see the Neti begin in would be the Mystic book. But this makes more sense. No you have my hopes up.

So, 'Savage Spirits' was announced start of January, and there's been no previews subsequently. We're not even sure of the species or spec skills yet.

How long normally does it take from announcement to release? About 4 months, roughly? Anyway, it's now May and there's nothing on the horizon for anything else in the lines, meaning that we're discussing the movies and Infinite Backpacks for want of anything else game-related to talk about.

Now I'm NOT saying 'the sky is falling!!!' at all.

And I'm not expecting the playtesters to comment obviously. They have dropped hints there is more in the offing.

But there does seem to be a lull. Holding everything back for GenCon maybe?

Or something else afoot? Force Awakens rules-set? 2nd Edition about to be announced?

Feels like... something ... is up, something is going on. I don't know what.

Thoughts?

The 3 separate RPG lines is a lie. There is only one with 3 colors. So, we already know what is next after Savage Spirit: The TFA beginner box and the soldier sourcebook.

I tend to lean towards this too. I think now that all 3 lines are up and running they may not have enough resources to develop all 3 at the same time at the same pace that we are used to. Considering how much Star Wars FFG is making I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the RPG talent is also tied up on their other projects. 3 full games is a lot to run.

sorry if I was on your last nerve. Anyway I kinda feel like you could peruse a fisher scientific catalogue while window-shopping inside a sporting good store and come up with everything an explorer would be looking for to do microbiology, chemistry, hiking, mountaineering, forestry, and ecology easily enough. I didn't see that much equipment in the enter the unknown splatbook though. just my thoughts.

No-one's saying that it isn't. It's even marketed as being completely compatible.

But it's getting hard to refer to it as something. I wish they'd actually give it a name now, something that refers to the entire product line as a whole.

'FFG's Star Wars RPG' is a bit cumbersome.

Edited by Maelora

I thought it was officially called "Star Wars Roleplaying"

Edit: Or maybe I got that impression when they "Re-colored" their dice .

We could call it:

Narrative Star Wars Roleplaying, NSWR or NSR

Narrative Edition, NE

Narrative Star Wars, NSW

EAFSW could work too (as in Edge Age Force Star Wars)

i think the 3rd one is the better, it's much shorter than the FFGSWRPG but still defines it well.

well if we were going with an acronym, I've been using "FFG SWRPG" for a while now.
