Readying actions

First of all: This isn't D&D 4!

If any of my players are considering a course of action that seems reasonable to me in the allotted time frame, they can do it. And if the RAW say otherwise, they can very well go and please themselves in any manner that satifies them best.

The thing is that raw is so abstract that it raw never really says otherwise, it is just that you do not get to necessary shoot first when you wait at that door for someone to steps into the room.

Yeah, that is also why it didn't sit right with me. It was a legatimate question though and when the player asked to do it last time I allowed it and then fellt awckward afterward...

Guess you should tell them that you will handle this next time a little different. They still can do it, or even just postpone to a lower init slot, but need to keep in mind that enemies may still react before them. Depending on the situation boost or setback dice can always given and a vigilance check for the guy who gets ambushed can always be made if he really does not suspect someone behind the door. If he does espected getting shot at he is not just opening the door and walking right into it anyway and thus eliminating that free shot for sure.

The narrative can really drive this into many different ways.

edit:

Keep in mind that advantages can be used to boost that waiting players action or add setback dice to an enemy who walks past the door. A triumph from another player may for example be used to distracted the guy coming to the door long enough to give your man a shot first. (Do something vital to turn tide of battle). And so on. those Triumphs and advantages need to be used for something and this would be a good way to spend a Triumph imho.
