Maneuver Dial Durability

By RepCommando, in X-Wing

Having been away from the game for a while and only recently returning to full steam, from the outset, I'd been putting a layer of contact paper on my maneuver dial faces to combat breakdown of the cardboard. Has FFG started coating the dial faces themselves? Is this even an issue any longer with the upgraded maneuver dials from FFG?

Just don't want to continue wasting my time with cutting and applying contact paper to my dials if it's not really necessary any longer. Thoughts? Opinions? Snarky comments?

FFG solved this with the dial packs...

I gloss-coat all of the cardboard pieces, including both sides of the maneuver dials. I also put a 5/16 nylon washer in between the two halves to keep them from rubbing together, I've been playing for three years have no visible wear on any of my dial faces.

Dial upgrade kits tend to be the answer to this problem.

Now if only we could have some of those replacement bases. I am tired of my ships falling off their pegs!

Heresy! Proudly show off your worn, faded, battle scarred dials with pride. Its like the veteran focus token that is almost pure white.

What product did you use for the gloss coat?

I don't know whether to love or laugh at the diy-ers who spend just as much in materials and hours of time instead of just buying the FFG dial upgrade kits?

If you Can buy the Upgrade Kits..

Our Local sold out almost immediately, since, y'know, FFG completely essentially pre-sold the first shipment before it had even landed....

Only peasants would swap the cardboard out of their upgrade dial kits over and over. So of course any serious X Wing player needs one upgrade dial for every ship. And you're still relying on untreated cardboard to last the test of time, which it won't. So why not look into alternatives?

Rustoleum 2X Coverage Gloss. One good coat on each side gives a nice high-gloss finish.

Well, I've been in this game for over three years, and the dial upgrades just came out a couple months ago.

I have over 100 ships. That means more than 100 dials thanks to Scum. #&%$ buying 35 odd dial packs.

Exactly. Much better to simply upgrade your existing ones.
