Petition for 2.0 of x-wing

By Hobojebus, in X-Wing

We've already had a "version 1.5" with the Force Awakens box set.

Although I do love your naming convention Hobo. If The X-Wing Miniatures Game version 4.0 brings us Golan platforms, Mon Calimari Cruises and the entire TIE Experimental series, then I'm all for it.

As an aside, I'm still waiting for a new X-Wing PC game. Preferably based along the lines of Elite: Dangerous, with the ability to join the Alliance, Empire or various underworld organisations...

Seing the new VR space sims, this would be super exciting. The next generation consols will have it, no doubt.

I got the joke! Do I get a cookie?

Besides, after 4th edition it'll just be a 10 year wait for EA to make something sort of kind of not really like it, and call it 5th edition...

I doubt that. PS4 is the only one with anything approaching VR (it's a great entry unit, but not a patch on the competition). Microsoft have said they have no interest in developing VR, although they've said nothing about using their Hololens tech for AR, and Nintendo have already announced their NX console release date.

The best cockpit games in VR all heavily emphasise HOTAS support. Elite even modelled their in-game flight stick to look like the Saitek X52, as opposed to some spacey-makey-uppey thing. You just won't get that on a console.

(Can you tell where my gaming allegiances lay?)

I really, really, REALLY hope so. I mean, can you imagine an open-ended, free-to-explore andplay-as-you-like space combat sim like Elite: Dangerous set in the Star Wars universe?

Start with a lowly Z-95, or R-41, or Scyk.

Do a couple of missions, deliver a couple of packages, upgrade to a Y-Wing or Cloakshape.

Eventually buy a frieghter - a YT series model, or a CEC ship. Run the shipping lanes. Speed through the Kessel Run.

Smuggle contraband. Dodge customs patrols, and fight off pirates. Get yanked out of hyperspace by an Interdictor. Have your shipments seized.

Capture wanted criminals or perform hits for the Black Sun, Hutt Cartels or Zann Consortium as a bounty hunter.

Join the Rebellion... or the Empire. Fight in massive space battles at Yavin and Endor... on either side of the conflict.

WHY HAS THIS NOT HAPPENED YET?

WHAT THE HELL, DISNEY? DO WE NEED TO START A KICKSTARTER OR SOMETHING?!!

A reprint of the rule set is one thing, redoing all the ships and upgrade cards would massively piss me off.

See Battlefront and all the Star Wars mobile games for an example of the kind of game Disney gives licenses for now... ewww...

2nd on TIE Fighter: The Miniatures Game title though with the coming of Stele I kind of think it already is.

agreed.

If you fix the rules, you have to fix the cards, at least some of them(most perhaps?) The old cards will not line up with the new rules. And some of the cards are begging to be redone from a wording point of view now.

VR bit aside (because that's a whole other market, really), an Elite style Star Wars game would be fantastic, but I'd be shocked if it happened. The market isn't big enough to be seen as lucrative for a game like that. Battlefront was a safer concept of game, and even that has been a relatively unsuccessful venture in their eyes.

I'm hoping, on the VR side, that we get something along the lines of Eve: Valkyrie. It wouldn't have the depth of an Elite style game in any way, but it'd be a lot easier to develop, and therefore might be more likely.

A 2.0 is already practically necessary. Nearly every ship has been patched over and repaired to keep it in the game, or is still waiting for a patch/fix. Many upgrades are almost never used. Some upgrades are always used. The design space is nearly tapped out, and the IP is nearly exhausted. A 2.0 reboot is going to happen at some point, its the only way the game can continue to grow. And I'm looking forward to it, to be honest.

You lot realise I'm not actually calling for a new edition right?

I think Epic is pretty awesome, though it's harder to find that sort of game, and I'm eager to see what's next in that regard.

I think Epic could use a lot more support. . .it is definitely the ignored second cousin, which, ironically, calls for one to purchase the most expensive miniatures in the game.

I would think redoing the ships is out, but I begin to think that a points revision of a lot of stuff is in order. I would be a lot of cards to redact, but if they we issued as packs of cards that would keep costs down.

I have also thought that "Pilot Packs" would be a great idea. . .new pilots for existing ships that come as a pack of cards without a ship.

Put me down for 2.0 somewhere around 2040.

you realise you're asking anyone who likes to attend organized events to have to completely replace all their ship and upgrade cards, right?

The multiple cloak rule cards out there cause enough confusion (the scum one is updated), and even if done it wont stop the need for further revisions to the new set as even newer content is released.

The faq is a little messy for newbies but it's the fastest, cheapest and most effective way to do it and a update reprint wont change the need for it to remain.

While the sarcasm of wanting to call the next game in the X-Wing "TIE Fighter" isn't lost on many the title is inflammatory on its own and is what leads to push back.

Title the thread "Here's what they should call the next edition of X-Wing" and you would have got a much more reasoned response. As mentioned previously calling this thread a "Petition for 2.0 of X-Wing" is just clickbait just begging for all kinds of negative attention.

No.

No

At this point in time? No!

No.

Yeah no.

Great responses guys. Really adds a lot to the discussion!

Ok, I don't see a need for a 2.0 version at the present time. Since I don't play competitively I really don't have a dog in that fight. What I would like to see is a little more thought and consistency that goes into the wording on the upgrade cards. The problems there are, I think, are an example of "familiarity breeds contempt". The designers have worked with the rules and verbiage for so long, they know what the cards say and don't necessarily see where there could be a problem with interpretation.

Better?

I can't believe the number of people in this, a Star Wars forum, who didn't get the joke and proceeded to get up-in-arms. Amazing.

Stop saying 2.0!

They might actually think it's a good idea.

Let the subject fall into the depths of silence!

Begone foul revisionists!

Pew!

TL!

Crackshot!

Critical strike!

Topic's damage cards exceed it's hull value and is removed from play!

Forum STILL needs a dislike button.

But they couldn't even make a new damage deck stick. How would they do this? (being serious)

I'm happy for it to happen if all of the models were still useable. I see no reason why they wouldn't be though. I'd imagine FFG has learned a lot and has some "I wish we'd done it this way" moments. Be good to see it re-done based on all of the accumulated knowledge over the years.

That being said, I don't think the game is in any way in an un-usable or un-recoverable state. It may be a bit rough around the edges, but is perfectly playable. Just needs regular maintenance and fine-tuning.

Isn't the new TFA core set 2.0?

or is it 1.5? Maybe 1.1?

I know, it's actually even funnier than the original joke, all the people who take it so srs.

That said...

It wouldn't be hard to do a 2.0 of the game.

Do something similar to Malifaux's Arsenal Packs when they went from 1e to 2e, with each faction getting a box of cards, including all necessary pilots and some of the upgrades, for $10. Maybe even do a box of just upgrade cards.

When it eventually happens call it tie fighter, then 3.0 can be x-wing vs tie fighter, 4.0 can be x-wing alliance and so on.

Only if the second version has a bunch of secret missions that only you know about.

Those are called scenarios :P

Add me to the camp that says that unless 2.0 comes firstly with an affordable update to all necessary upgrades and pilots, I'm out. I got into X-wing less than 6 months ago, made many mistakes, and I'm not starting again from scratch. Besides, I'd have plenty to keep playing with my sons.

They have to balance making a profit with the players' best interest if they want to keep getting my money.

It will happen at some point; it's pretty much inevitable, looking at ... every other game in the world. :) I expect there'd be card decks on sale to let players of the 1st edition upgrade to the 2nd, like with Descent (or Warmachine and Malifaux). One pack for Rebels, one for Scum and one for Imperials, and then one or more for the upgrades. I suppose the ratio of cards included could be set according to sales of 1st edition packs.

Really, the only thing that concerns me is whether a 2nd edition makes the game more or less like the game I really want to play.
