WOTC Stand Ins

By MoSSBerG, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Sorry if this has been asked in the past: can you use the old WOTC (awesome) figures as painted stand ins for the unpainted FFG models?

I'm a painter but I am a fan of some of the old WOTC poses and paint jobs. I was wondering if I could use those old models in competitive play.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Not in competitive play. For tournaments it's strictly FFG figs.

When playing with your friends, yeah sure, whatever you want.

Pay attention to the size of the bases too. For example, the WotC Probe Droid is a 2x2 base, while the FFG one is 1x1. The WotC Wampa is 2x2, while the FFG Wampa is 2x1.

But yeah, I often use the painted WotC figs. They look so much better than the flat gray or beige that I have right now, until I make the time to paint them.

And everybody knows, the dice roll better when your figures are painted.

I dig them for differing your squads a bit. I have one set of FFG hired guns and one set of WOTC painted up in similar colors. That gives me two uniform yet easily distinguishable squads.

They are also great for testing new units before they are released, FFG always spoil a few cards way in advance.

If you have WOTC minis that can represent ugnaughts, junk droids and ISB infiltrators then you can print out the full card art from this site and use them against your friends.

It sounded like the junk droid from Bespin is just going to be a token. I hope they allow a WOTC droid in it's place.

I plan to ignore this 'FFG says no' ruling and play with the rule of cool....if it looks cool (like all droids do) then I'm gonna play with it....ive never had issues at competitive level using appropriate stand ins or conversion pieces, but then I've never come up against 'that one guy' (read that as '****') who complains for the sake of it i mostly find people go 'oh now that looks cool! i can't wait to kill it'

I obviously agree, and we use WotC minis all the time at my home. However, I'm not going to risk that when going to an actual event at a store. I'll bring the WotC minis in case nobody cares, but I'll have my unpainted FFG minis with me, hoping that nobody will care.
