IA scale

By medalheart, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Hello,

what mm scale is closest to IA, I have FOW (15mm) and Battle tech (6mm) just seeing what terrain would work, if I wanted to go from map to 3D terrain

thank you,

Medalheart

I believe it's somewhere in the 25-30mm scale range, although I'm not an expert on the matter. They're roughly to the same scale as Wizards of the Coast's previous Star Wars Miniatures and D&D Miniatures lines.

I haven't done any comparisons, but I would have said they were more like 30-32mm. Closer to GWs "heroic scale".

Regardless, for the OP, any terrain in that general range should be OK.

They look identical in size to Star Wars Miniatures which are 1:57 or 32mm.

Thank you all for the help, much appreicated.

Peace,

Medalheart

Wait a sec...

I'll preface this saying that I've played X-wing for years now but that X-wing and Imperial Assault are my first competitive games, so I don't sound entirely noobish on the subject. I've heard people at the LGS chatting about miniature scale, and 30mm vs 40mm vs 50mm etc, but I always assumed that had something to do with the height of the minis, which seemed weird because even in IA, there are different scaled and different sized miniatures. But an entire game is labeled as meeting a 30mm scale, for instance, even though the minis in that game are of various size.

...does it relate to base diameter? Because that makes SO much more sense.

Games Workshop used to mainly be 25mm then they upgraded it to (I think) 28mm (and some recent stuff looks bigger).

I think it represents a set measurement equivalent, eg something like a standard human height of say 6foot (that measurement is a guess and used for illustrative purposes) so at 25mm scale, 25mm would equate to 6foot, thus in the same scale, larger people/monsters etc (eg orcs) are bigger than 25mm but still withing 25mm-scale, its just that they may represent a creature of 7foot height.

Same principle for 28mm scale, 30mm etc

This isvwhat I have always understood the situation to be and have been buying miniatures for 30 years now, BUT Ive never had this explanation confirmed, do it could be me spouting rubbish.... but I think its correct.

I dont know what scale IA is, but from sight it looks to be about 28mm to me and could eadilly be 30mm but I dont think any more than that and the core set figures look too tall to be 25mm scale.

Miniature scale is a very complex subject. It also frequently evokes strong reactions from some people for no good reason.

A "X mm" scale is the number of millimeters that a typical human stands. You get disagreements though on what "typical" means. For me, the scale in mm is the number of mm in 6' (1.8m). There is also some disagreement as to what point on a "typical human" you are supposed to measure to. In some modelling circles, you measure to the height of the eyes on the miniature, instead of the top of the head, which would make 2 figures at theoretically the same scale different sizes.

Waaaay back in the day, gaming miniatures were 25mm scale. A human was roughly an inch tall. Games Workshop/Citadel, however, started modeling figures that were bigger than that, closer to 28mm scale. In addition, GW figs were deliberately sculpted out of proportion, with massively exaggerated limbs and hands and, especially, guns. This came to be called "28mm heroic scale".

GW did very well for itself and for more than a decade they were the dominant miniature producer. During this time the "GW Style" became sort of standard for fantasy and sci-fi gaming miniatures (with historical gamers acting superior with their "true scale" figures). GW figs also suffered from "scale creep". Because GW has the attitude that bigger is better, and their signature line features 8' tall super humans, the actual scale of their figures slowly got bigger. I don't really know what it is now, it has become so muddled I doubt you could say they HAVE a consistant scale (and that doesn't even consider their tank issues).

As for Imperial Assault. No idea what the scale actually is. Most figs on this size category you can get away with calling anywhere between 28-32mm scale. I do know that they are noticeably bigger and bulkier than the WotC SW figures, so I would guess they are closer to the 32mm end of things. Regardless, any terrain built for figures in that scale range should work fine.

they are probably going to fall under the 28-32mm bracket as mentioned above.

I have played games using the BattleSystems Sci-Fi terrain and i have to say it looked fantastic but was a little fiddly to move stuff around. Such is the problem taking a 2.5D game and making it full 3D
