The Rebel Alliance, money and you

By Desslok, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

Like all rebel forces (real or imagined) their cells need some sort of income.

In real life this is usually some sort of illegal activity.

Like drug running, kidnappings or worse.

But I'd say that in AoR, it would be selling off the loot you get from actual missions.

Take over a secret imperial base?
Sell off the weapons you get from the dead/captured enemies.

Disrupt or steal enemy shipments to then sell them on the black market.

Take jobs for criminal elements when they're unknowingly lining up with your own goals (like rescuing some criminals off an imperial prison transport, while also rescuing your captured informants, or destroying an imperial patrol to create a diversion for a bank-heist. Things like that)

Or, between missions, you could simply be stealing from the criminals and selling to other criminals :)

The Galactic Empire looks at Rebels as more than a nuisance. I contend that more than one Imperial Officer sees the Rebellion as active terrorists.

How might any terrorism group fund itself? Answering this question shouldn't be too hard, given a myriad of real-world examples.

Yeah, but I don't want to wind up on an NSA watch list by googling "How do I bankroll terrorist activities". . . .

Understood. Try looking up historical money/political-favor laundering example and conspiracies, like WaterGate or what is being unearthed at the Clinton Foundation to stay under NSA radar. Whether or not the Clinton Foundation accusations are true is moot for our RPG goals (read: this is an example, not a trolling invitation to start flame wars), the media coverage and political analysis from either political party should provide a mountain of RPG-relate-able examples.

Now you are already on that list as you just ask that question anyway, so feel free to do it now.

Real world example would be selling resources to your own war enemy. Isis for example is selling oil to turkey. Drug money is always good to finance terrorism, freedom fighters and covered ops. The Taliban had tons of opium fields, etc

Slavery would be a great source of income as well, but is mostly off-limits for the rebellions core, but definitely not for any separatists forces who joined the cause.

Then there is classical support from legitimate sources, Alderaan and Chandrialla, the Verpine, Mon Cal and many more planets simply send the rebellion money, ships, men and resources in general. Most of that stuff is done in secret, not always with direct governmental involvement, but still legitimate sources.

I give the PC an operating budget for each mission and they can use that to r equation items from alliance stores also every so often I roll 3 d10 for pay to simulate the fact that the alliance is not a regular force with pays ales and paydays. The budge I give is not an actual pile of money it is to simulate what the alliance is willing to invest in the mission.
