Newbie product question please

By alexbobspoons, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Hi, big newbie here.

I have an IA figure pack question please (not fully up on rules yet).

If you buy multiple products, do you tend to play the core set and then sometimes decide to add-in some of the figure packs, eg chewbacca, and on that game add his extra cards to the main card pool.

or...

Once you own a figure pack, do you straightaway add all their cards to the main core card pool permanently for the rest of all your plays forever? Thus the main game card decks get bigger and bigger (does this affect play?)

Also, does the above differ when playing the campaign from an adventure expansion, eg Return to Hoth ? Would you only add figure-pack-cards that were released with that expansion?

Thank you for any advice.

Alex

Each figure pack explains how to integrate their contents into your campaign. These explanations are included on the map each figure pack comes with. Each pack is different and integrates differently.

By the rules, Side Missions and Agenda Sets cannot be added to a campaign in progress. (Those decks get built at the beginning of the campaign and cannot be altered). Many of us have implemented house rules that allow this, but they are house rules.

Figure(s) can be used to replace the token(s) that represent them at any time you have a mission that would use the token(s).

Skirmish Command cards can be added to the skirmish deck immediately (not campaign related)

Rewards/Items/Tiered Cards can be added to their campaign immediately, but you should check the "Component Limitations" section of each expansion pack to be certain.

Imperial / Scum Deployment Cards (for the most part), can be added directly to the campaign, however you must refer to the "Component Limitations" section of the RRG and the expansion pack.

Each expansion says how they are integrated. Generally you add cards to their respective supplies.

For the campaign

For allies such as Chewbacca, you add the side mission card to the available side missions, so an additional mission is available when you build the side mission deck. By winning the side mission the rebels win either the ally or a reward card.

For villains such as IG-88, you have 3-card agenda sets which you can include when building the agenda deck. One of the cards is an agenda side mission. By buying the agenda side mission, and either winning it or rebels skipping it you win either the villain (unique villains) or a reward card (other villain packs).

Great thanks :)

So if you bought a few figure packs alongside the coreset, would you personally add their cards straightaway or play the core set vanilla/plain first then add the extra cards later for variety?

That's entirely up to you but I'd say add them in. Gives more flexibility/variety to the campaign when building the agenda and side mission decks. For skirmish you definitely want to add the stuff pertaining to skirmish straightaway.

Also some of the villains are already in the main core campaign. Like for example Darth Vader/Royal Guard Champion/General Weiss. So rather than using the cardboard token when you do that particular mission, you can use the figure. Now if you always want to have Darth Vader available to play in your "Open Group" category, then you will have to get that side mission and play it at the appropriate time.

One of the things not mentioned are the non-unique figures. Like Hired Guns and soon to be ISB Infilitrators. Since theyre not unique, you can use them immediately in your "Open Group" deck.

Thanjs so much everybody :)

Thanjs so much everybody :)

We played first one with only core side missions and agenda (Luke and Vader out). We only unpacked figures. I think it is better. You know no missions so there is really no added variety in choosing which side missions to play + you will have easier setup phase because you can skip building up side mission and agenda decks. With little knowledge of the game you would probably have no idea which one to choose anyway.

Ah thank you that helps too :)

I tend to buy games in lumps, not just the core set, so my new purchase does include a number of the expansions. I couldn't decide if to proceed one product at a time, adding in the cards as I go to add extra intrigue and extra added fun, or if to shove everything in one box all at once.

I prefer the idea of doing it slowly, getting used to one product at a time then adding the next shiny new aspect (but I didnt know if this was particularly feasible with IA).

Im also slightly unsure about my storage options.

Do I keep all the expansions bagged up separate and add in to play when needed? Or do I clump everything altogether in one big box and cherry-pick the components I need for any given play session? Dunno yet, just not sure.

I do appreciate all the advice folks as its all a lot to take in at once as a newbie :)

So much fun ahead :)

I have skismish stuff and the superfluous deployment cards separated, otherwise I have everything stored by types. (Return to Hoth and Twin Shadows tiles are currently on separate stacks.)

Thanks :)

Im thinking of having all the tiles in ziplock bags within the core box, then use the Hoth box for all the cards within deck-boxes and a foamcore tray above containing all the tokens & bits, then lastly, the miniatures within a seperate figure carrycase (also containing manuals). That way there should be room for expansion while all components within three boxes for transport purposes.

CD binders are great for storing map tiles. A few of the bigger ones have too hang out loose but the rest have their own cd pouch arranged in numerical order. Makes set up a breeze.

I use feldherr foam trays. They even have special ones to fit in the boxes but I do not like all of them. The two piece set for core box is great. Then I took some half-sized for figures (dense grid) and some half-sized with big compartments for cards and other material.

I also bought many expansions at once but as I have already said. I unpacked only figures from Wave I and then after the first campaign I added everything else.

I got a set of the Gothsonika inserts and they're excellent.
