Double or Triple Recon Specialists?

By nurseninja, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I had a polite and civil disagreement with an opponent who stated that only one RecSpec would take effect from a focus action. I had a ghost Kanan and a pair of RecSpecs planning on focusing for three focus tokens.

Can I get a confirmation or any input on this scenario? preferably with the logic or rules as to why it works that way?

If Recce spec told you to have 2, your opponent would be correct.

However, it tells you to get 1 extra, so 2 recce's = 3 focus (3 recce's = 4 focus)

Each RecSpec adds one extra focus.

Even for Kanan who has guaranteed ways of spending them if attacked, though, there's diminishing returns, and you might well be better off spending the points on something else, e.g. Kyle crew to make sure you pick up a focus when you clear stress so your trick keeps working in the face of stress imposition.

Recon Specialist gives you +1 token when you take the Focus Action. If you take the Focus action the ALL will trigger giving you an additional token as there is no maximum you can have.

Note that Recon Specialist ONLY works when you use the Focus Action (although a Free Focus ACTION will also work) and not just any time you are assigned a Focus token.

It is not yet marked as *Limited the way Tactician is. If this combo starts showing up too often in tournaments they might address it, but enjoy it while you can!

It's not all that powerful when you generally have only a limited number of times you can spend Focus tokens and they generally disappear automatically at the end of the round. Using multiple Recon Specialist also makes you extremely predictable when it comes to desired action and don't forget that someone like Jax can just shut it down.

Thankyou very much. I only realised after posting this quite how many times this question has come up recently. hopefully I can persuade my locals of this interpretation :)

Looking at Kanan more closely this probably one of the few situations where multiple Recon Specialists will actually be useful. Kanan is just once per attack but if he is really being a problem to someone then an effort should be made to just BLOCK him; no action means he has to get his Focus token, or a free action, from somewhere else.

"Interpretation" is for when the language is ambiguous--when it could be reasonably read in a couple of different ways. This isn't an interpretation!

Recon Specialist says "assign 1 additional focus token to your ship." There's no general reason that effects can't stack. (It's unusual to see stacking effects in X-wing, because it's typically not valuable to do so--but consider that Intelligence Agents stack, and so do Mercenary Copilots.) The most common restriction in X-wing is the once-per-opportunity rule, but that doesn't apply because each Recon Specialist is its own effect.

So it's up to your opponents to come up with a good reason the rules won't let you stack Recon Specialists, and... good luck to them, I guess, because they're going to need it. ;)

Pretty clear that it works. Not limited, and says assign one more. Then, when you add another you assign one more.

Deliberately worded differently than Weapons Engineer, which doesn't stack.
