Maarek Stele stackable?

By YariSamurai, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hello fellow pilots,

I wanted to ask if there is the possibility to use Maarek's special pilot ability multiple times if you deal more than one critical hit to the defender.

Thank you,

YariSamurai

Yes. There is no "once per attack" or "once per round" limit on his ability, so if you deal multiple crits, you get to use the ability on each crit. Note that you still process them one at a time (draw 3, pick 1, discard the other 2, repeat). You do NOT get to draw 6 and then pick 2.

I'm not so sure.

When your attack deals a faceup Damage card to the defender, instead draw 3 Damage cards, choose 1 to deal, and discard the others.

My take on it right now (and entirely subject to change) is that when "your attack" deals "a" card it triggers once. To look at it in a RAW context, it's not phrased as "for each faceup damage card", but more of a binary occurrence of did you, or did you not, deliver a face-up card. If so, draw 3 and deal 1.

It's funny that this doesn't seem to have come up before, mostly from him being so rarely used with the TIE/Adv.

I think it triggers on each card. It seems that the opportunity is "when you attack deals a faceup Damage card to the defender", which occurs for each critical damage they suffer, that is, the opportunity is dealing the card, not performing the attack.

I've always understood it to apply each time a damage card is dealt by Maarek to the target. The cards are still dealt one at a time which is also why you get 1/3 twice instead of 2/6.

Similarly, each time Leebo would get a face-up card he can pick up the next card in the deck and then decide which one to keep and which one to get rid of.

Now if you are looking at the interaction between Maarek and Leebo I believe it is that Maarek looks at three and picks one to hand to Leebo; Leebo then picks up another card and decides which one of those to keep. Although largely irrelevant this takes four cards out of the DD each time.

Thanks a lot.

Well, i was already thinking of using him on the TIE Defender.

Also if you deal 2 faceup cards with him, how do you determine which card you get to choose from 3 for? There's nothing suggesting it only works on the first occurrence so there's no way to resolve it if it only happens once per attack.
