There's always a bigger pipe

By Ghostofman, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

OK, so one of my players is running a Melee Monster (those familiar with the Darkstryder Campaign: Gunthar).

I'm totally cool with it, despite pulling the numbers for him almost entirely out of my thermal exhaust port the character is largely working out and proving to be a fan-favorite.

But they finally had a chance to really go shopping, and Gunthar needed an upgrade. For his weapon, Gunthar has been using a large metal pipe. (forget what I used for stats, doesn't matter now anyway) but he wanted something bigger. Offhand I just pulled the big honking sword from Nexus, had them make the acquisition checks as usual (they succeeded) and called it good. The player said he felt a larger, heavier pipe would feel better on the character instead of a big sword. No prob, GMCADABRA! It's a pipe! Then he started looking at attachments, and I took pause.

As an edged weapon, it's intended to work with Mono and Serrated edge... but as a blunt weapon it'll actually have to work with things like weighted head....

Offhand, it looks like the conversion isn't an issue. If anything weighted head looks less potentially OP.

I made arraignments to get the players his attachments once I'd had a change to kick the idea around a little

So, anything I'm missing? Any attachment combos or connections to the Marauder Spec that might cause and Issue? Or is Gunthar gonna be a happy big, green, whatever he is?

You could remove or tweak the social benefits of the "Staff of Office" and call that a pipe instead. Off the top of my head, I don't recall how it compares with the sword your PC just acquired.

if its a 3 hp item, weighted head and stun pulse would be effective enough. if for some odd reason u hr it as a 4 hp for custom grip as well, its a pretty mean pipe.

Only thing i can see been an issue is weighted head can have concusive, which turns almost an weapon to a one hit wonder.

But unless the base damage the sword is already really high (+4 ) its nothing that existing weapons can't do.(Electrostaff and weapon design rules blunt weapons all ready can reach +4 without a weighted head)

personally id just walk around with a jury rigged tinkered longling whip and beat things down to death ;o

I’m a big fan of the Force Pike. You can use it to cause either Wound damage or Stun damage, and you can fit things like a Stun Pulse on it. If you jury-rigged it, you could have enough HP to give it Weighted Head, and that could be very nasty if you also let him have Concussive.

You could also add a home-grown attachment to it, like telescopic shaft. That might allow him to use it one-handed, so that now he can do Two Weapon Combat with a pair of these things.

And a Force Pike usually isn’t too heavily frowned upon by law enforcement types, especially if it has a telescopic shaft and it’s in the collapsed state, where it just looks like a truncheon or something else relatively benign.

Imagine a giant Wookiee that’s 2.5m tall and 400-500 pounds, max Brawn, and swinging these things. Oh, and give him a Jetpack or Jump Boots, so that he can cover a lot of ground in a single round. Or maybe Force Leap.

Talk about Death from Above. ;)
