With all these awesome ships now. Increase points to 150??

By Fuzzywookie, in X-Wing

At 150 I could play some or all of my favorites.

No one is stopping you from playing 150 in casual games, or running a tournament at that point scale.

You also might want to make the rounds 90 minutes, over 75, and limit ships to 8 of any one small based model & 4 of any large.

I would not want that for tournament play.

I've played 150 games and they're fun. But 100 points is the limit for a reason, namely so you can't run everything you want.

I was just thinking that I really want to go to higher points with all these cool new ships around.

My Defenders would love 150 point games.

But honestly I think 100 is a good spot to force list innovation as well as manage overall game length.

We don't need the 2 hour time limit as Armada.

You're not shackled to the tournament format unless you're playing in a tournament you're not running.

100 points really is a good spot for competitive tournaments. It forces players to pick and choose ships/upgrades and really be points-thrifty while also allowing a quicker, than most. table-top game. I don't think the tournament point limit should be increased- it is right where it needs to be for both a fast and fun competitive scene.

That being said, I love flying 150 point games. Some of the most fun I've had is playing them- the squad loadout and composition really open up and you can have some killer combos.

150 points is a little extreme for tournaments, but it would be cool if TOs could have some freedom here, just like they do on match time limit. Say between 80 and 120 points.

They don't have freedom on time limit any more...

Dunno if anything my 150 point games were quicker as there was more fire concentrated on targets.

You're not shackled to the tournament format unless you're playing in a tournament you're not running.

I get that 100 point 6 obstacle death match is the standard method and the one most played. But I don't understand why people think there needs to be an official change to the value or game type to run their own events with different values.

150 points is a little extreme for tournaments, but it would be cool if TOs could have some freedom here.

That's a bad idea, you no longer have all Store Champions being played the same way.

But again there's nothing preventing a TO from hosting an event with different values, it just can't be done for official type events.

Hey Fuzzy, congrats on making a topic that deserves feedback!

I say 120 is a good spot for casual games, or 150 'half epic' with a transport or Gozanti. Tournaments should be 100 points for the first rounds, but the top 8 should be forced to cut to 50 points. Of course I don't play in tourneys so what do I know.

Think about it for a second.

When the point limit forces you to make difficult choices and compromises over the contents of your list, it's doing its job.

For everything else.. there's epic format.

Amirite?

I'd love to run a couple 400 point casual games. I probably don't have the time for that sort of thing but man it'd be sweet to look at!

Still, 150 point tournaments would be fun. I prefer to play 100 points most of the time but I'm fine with changing it up here and there.

The game is balanced fairly specifically for the 100-point level; a lot of design decisions have been made around that cap (from Kirhaxz and X-Wing costs to Firespray costs and so on). Likewise, there's a lot more playtesting for the 100-point level, which means ships are generally better balanced there. Look at the VCX-100; it's a solid ship in the standard setup, but gets weaker the more enemies it faces (cus zero agility). Making 150 the new standard pretty much kills it.

I like the idea in theory because I think 3 ship lists in the 150 format wouldnt be as strong as 2 ship lists in the 100 poont format but I dont really know.

I agree but don't you think the same restrictions would apply to a 125/150 point game? Sure, you'll end up with more "stuff" either on the board or in the ships but stuff will necessarily be left off. The choice between a mega-swarm of Ties or several big ships loaded to the gills is just an extreme example of what we have now.

Being a relative noob I don't have a firm grip on all the nuances of the game, so I may be wrong on whether a 125/150 point limit would be too much but it would be interesting in casual play. Imagine running a list of nothing but bounty hunters. Fett, Dengar, IG88 x 2 and Bossk et al. Limit the big ships to the named vessels with the standard captain and build from there.

150 points is a little extreme for tournaments, but it would be cool if TOs could have some freedom here.

That's a bad idea, you no longer have all Store Champions being played the same way.

Why would that be so terrible? Why must we live in a "Big Mac world", where everything is exactly the same everywhere we go?

For higher level events (regionals and up), I can see the point of a standardized format. But for store championship, why shouldn't the store have some freedom?

When the point limit forces you to make difficult choices and compromises over the contents of your list, it's doing its job.

If it is actually a limit, then any limit is going to do that....
