Dr. StrangeBossk, or How I learned to love engine upgrade

By Djaskim609, in X-Wing

So I went to my FLGS with a 75pt list (looking for a partner for a 150 pt. team list). I had a contracted scout and 4-LOM. I mostly wanted to play the new ships as I haven't had a chance to play them since I bought them. Another team showed up with their 150 pt list but I didn't have a partner, so I through some more ships on my list. I loaded up a YV-666 with Bossk and a z-95 black sun. One dude was flying a 75 pt Decimator and the other had whisper and the Inquisitor.

I've lurked here a while and have seen many people praise engine upgrade for large base ships, but never understood it until this match. The other team focused on the contracted scout, 4-LOM, and Z-95 first. Bossk hammered the Deci (which got flown into rocks several times, which also helped me out). Near the end of the match, it was just Bossk vs Whisper. Whisper was behind Bossk, so i fled out of range along the map's edge and boosted away. I stayed out of range and he followed me, but didn't try to intercept me, and ended up in my secondary arc and he had been stressed so he couldn't cloak. Zap! no more Whisper. I didn't think I was going to win as my list was pretty much thrown together.

I knew big ships movement was affected by their large bases, but I never understood how much difference a boost could make. Of course, my opponents weren't thinking about the potential damage output from Bossk, either, so my other ships chipped away at theirs while getting destroyed. I'm liking Bossk, but a lot of his success was because of my opponents not focusing on him. Dengar as a crew member is pretty cool, too, but he was on the scout.

Also, a 2 hard turn and then boost in the other direction will let you evade a lot of firing arcs at ships that are coming straight at you.

Glad you liked Bossk. I haven't gotten the ship yet, but it seems neat.

It's a cool flying stapler. Bossk with a Dengar crew would be pretty sweet, but probably wouldn't last under sustained fire. I guess the trick would be making your opponent more interested in your other ships.

It is hands down my favorite ship.

I love Bossk and the YV-666. Accelerating out of danger then turning to catch the pursuer in the auxiliary arc has worked for me. I'm keen to try it next with an engine upgrade. Those auxiliary arcs are the reason I prefer calculation over a mangler cannon, this ship can fire broadsides!

Bossk (35)

4-LOM (1)

Zuckuss (1)

Dengar (3)

VI (1)

total 41 pts.

This Bossk build has been absolutely awesome for me. I'm 11-2 using it paired with other various ships ( usually Tel in a Jumpmaster). It can be difficult to fly this without EU on Bossk, but if you can keep ships in your arc it can destroy just about anything. If you wanna spend a few more points, putting Mangler Cannon on Bossk can help get his pilot ability used a little more as well. Only problem I've run into is when I run into swarms flown by people who know how to block.

Put engine upgrades on the Decimator and watch how much fun it becomes.

Wait until you try a fat turret with EU. The boost moves them so fast, and because they're full turrets they don't really care which direction they end up pointing, so long as it's not over obstacles or off the board on the following turn. It gives you absurd amounts of flexibility when it comes to arc dodging. It's kind of mean.

Well, you can't do the 2-hard and boost with Bossk, as the YV's dial only has a hard 3.

YV's are one of those ships that seems to get much better in a pair. You can set up all sorts of bumps and blocks with them to ensure that your firing arcs can do the most damage.

I LOVE Bossk :) Have been flying him a lot and I agree that you need EU on him. never fly without :) My favourite loadout would be:

Bossk (35)

Calculation (1)

Outlaw tech (2)

Dengar (3)

EU (4)

total 45 pts.

with outlaw tech and dengar you don't need to be afraid to use the 2 turn and stop move and then you can still use calculation ;)

Have fun with Bossk!

Bossk just needs marksmanship an gunner. No need for the Eu.

Aux arcs are huge. 4-straight and 3-turn is all ya need. And the 1-speeds if you can find the space for one more shot before 4-straighting away

I've still never needed to boost in the slaver

Every time I fly him without an EU I get killed by a leftover ace... when they are behind me there is no way to turn around fast enough. kudos on everyone surviving a one on one fight with him :-) and a slaver I fly without EU just because it's not worth the points, you want to keep them cheap

It saved me against whisper--i GTFO of his arc and he made the mistake of following me instead of trying to intercept, but I think he still would have lost the face off as Bossk had mostly full health and a decloaked whisper in arc was going to die.

Bossk + VI + Dengar + Gonk (or Tactician) + 4-LOM + Engine Upgrade = 45 points of Space Truck Pain Train.

The key is to use him like a hammer and the rest of your squad like an anvil.

And then you boom and zoom.

Come in hard and fast from the flank, smash a target, and zoom off to come back around. A 4 forward followed by a boost is an amazingly fast movement for a large base and can and will catch people off guard.
