Breath Attack Question

By player548736, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi, We have just played Descent for the first time tnight abd a question came up reagrding the hellhound's breath attack.

Does armour have any effect on the damage this does? I said no as the rules stated that the full damage was taken and that it did not make any mention of armour in the description - is this correct?

Nope, armor takes affect. Please do not confuse damage with wounds. In short, damage is the hearts rolled on dice, and wounds is the hearts minus any armor. Hope this helps.

+1 to the not confusing damage and wounds. They are two different things. The statement about Breath that figures take full damage is there to point out that all figures take the rolled damage and its not split up between figures. For example, if you hit three figures with a Breath attack and do three damage, they all take 3 damage, not each one takes one damage.

Note, however, that hellhounds have a fair amount of Pierce , so you need a large amount of armor before it makes any difference in that particular case.

A monster with breath, can it make a range attack agenst one hero, or is it an evel world and the monster must use the breath templade burning its allied?

The recent FAQ has stated that Breath (among other abilities) is an optional affect. A hellhound can either use Breath with his attack or make a normal attack without Breath.

Per current FAQ you can use Breath/Blast in single target mode ignoring template/area effect. AFAIK you can't do so with Bolt attack.

Unless, for some reason, you happen to have a Bolt attack appear in Sea of Blood (which has no bolt-capable monsters). They added the optional clause the the description for Bolt in the Sea of Blood rules.
