Maarek Stele, marksmanship, and TIE/D

By All Shields Forward, in X-Wing Rules Questions

As marksmanship is worded it gives you one crit for the round. So if Maarek uses marksmanship with TIE/D he only gets one crit, which you save for his primary weapon attack. Am I understanding this correctly?

I know it currently doesn't matter as any current cannon that works with TIE/D cancels all the dice. But I thought it was an interesting rule interaction.

No, Marksmanship works as many times as you can attack, but only once per attack you make.

But as you note, it's irrelevant that it does in this case, because TIE/D only works with cannons that cancel all their results, and with TIE/D existing I very much doubt they would publish a cannon that was 3 or less and did damage based on its dice.

However, for ships that make multiple attacks (e.g. Dengar, Corran, TLTs) it affects each attack.

Whether it's a sesinble thing to take, on the other hand, is more of a question...

Marksmanship isn't an entirely bad option with the TIE/D title as it will increase your odds of hitting. And the Flechette and Ion Cannons require that you hit to inflict damage.

Consider this:

  1. Perform Marksmanship action for the round.
  2. Attack with Ion Cannon, and Marksmanship modifies all focus results.
  3. Trigger for TIE/D
  4. Attack with primary, and Marksmanship once again modifies all focus results.

So the possible crit from Marksmanship doesn't help the damage with the cannon attacks, but it does help increase the possibility of hitting which will result in some damage, and when you attack with the primary, you can use it again and this time to full effect.

True. My bad.

For the purposes of TIE/D it works like focussing twice, only you can't use the focus in defence.

Well I've used marksmanship on kavil before to great effect I think it could do well for maarek.

Attacks more important than defence in this game.

I assume that the marksmanship is on a TLT Kavil. It would be pretty hard to avoid the two damage each round from that, especially out of arc.

Marksmanship would be great on Horton TLT BTL EPT bot, reroll all blanks and change all focus results on THREE attacks in one round? Yes please!

Marksmanship on a TIE/D Maarek is as close to a perfect spot for Marksmanship as you are likely to find. He gets to use Marksmanship to modify multiple attacks in a round and he gets extra value from crits. You'd be hard pressed to find a better fit for Marksmanship but I still don't think that Marksmanship comes anywhere close to being an auto-include on him.

BTL TLT Y-wing with EPT Astro, especially Horton. See above.

Although Maarek with Marksmanship has been a quasi-thing since wave one. Until Calculation came out. Defender Maarek might bring it back.
