Flare Torpedoes!!! (Blinded Pilot Weapon Effect)

By SlaveofChrist, in X-Wing

Hi Folks!!! Hope things are well with everyone!

I was thinking earlier about some cool new ideas for weapons, and I was thinking about a new type of Torpedo that mimics the effect of Blinded Pilot

$_35.JPG

Specifically, I thought about a really bright, blinding Flare set off by/in front of the enemy pilot - hence "Flare Torpedoes" I thought of torpedoes, because there are more missiles (right now) then torpedoes, plus I thought with being a torpedo, the most that one ship could carry is two (where as the Imperials can carry up to four missiles) to help balance things. I guess it could be like Flechette Torpedoes or Tractor Beam of a 3 die attack strength. As for cost, I'm really not too sure - suggestions, thoughts, feedback, ideas? Please let me know, thanks and God bless :D .

In my opinion torpedoes should do more damage than missiles. I just think torpedoes are bigger and carry more boom than a little missile. Anyways I think these sort of things are a good idea. I think we need more ability ordnance, at the moment there are damage, stress and ion ordnance, could do with a bit more life injected into them.

Here's to hoping the idea takes off.

I agree that Torpedoes should be more powerful - makes sense to me.

Here's a "prototype" of Flare Torpedoes for what I was thinking about (I sure hope FFG is reading this one!!! ^_^ )

I do like the idea of a weapon having that effect, but I think it would make more sense as a bomb.

This is Mag Pulse Warheads from the old flight sim in a nutshell.

Funnily enough, said warheads are on the TIE/sf so they may not be far off.

I think "Flash Torpedo" would be a better name. Because when you say "Flare", people think "this is for getting rid of incoming missiles".

Yup, call it Mag Pulse and "put it on a card." Might want to figure out some way to get around gunner and similar effects though. Not sure if we want another token to lug around though.

My thought was a suite of "mag-pulse" weapons that cause you to roll one fewer attack die and stack similar to tractor tokens.

You wouldn't. It's called a Weapons Disabled token and it's already in the game.

Agreed, good point ;) .

On topic for the flare/flash torpedo vs. Mag Pulse I would like to see both actually because I imagine the flare would only blind if it does not actually hit the ship which gives it an interesting double impact (damage if it hits, blindness if it misses). Whereas Mag-pulse would need to hit to give the target a weapons disabled token.

For extra crazy, maybe the flare should work more like the ion torpedo does and just blind all ships in range 1 of the target! Either way I'd say cancel all damage if it hits...

Problem with weapons disabled is that the rules dictate that you remove at the end of the round so that shooting at a higher PS target would accomplish nothing.

I think bombs are a better place to do this as well. Here's my idea.

Flash Bomb

When you reveal your maneuver dial, you may discard this card to drop 1 flash bomb token.

This token detonates at the end of the Activation phase.

Flash Bombs Token: When this bomb token detonates, each ship with the token in arc and range 2 receives a weapons disabled token. Ships with turrets or auxiliary arcs receive a weapons disabled token if within range 1.

Well...I will admit that "Flash Bomb" does sound very cool :)! While I did think of Bombs as well, and I also think it is very thematic, I specifically thought of Torpedoes being useful against a specific target (like a blasted high level pilot <_<!) to being able to neutralize them - even if just for a short while, as I find (which doesn't make it true, mind you) it much more difficult to target specific Pilots with bombs vs. ordinance.

However, I don't think that there isn't any reason that they couldn't both be used :D . After all, Proton Bomb's and Advanced Homing Missiles are essentially cousins anyways!

But then you risk autocorrect changing it to Flesh Torpedoes, which could be a problem.

Lens Flare Torpedo

If this torpedo hits, receive one stress token for having to see yet another image of hackneyed sfx.

a.k.a. J. J. Abrams torpedo

A valid point. I also thought about the weapons disabled token to use, and your point makes sense.

However, I was thinking about Corran Horn's ability

that seems to "carry over" into the next round. While no tokens are used, this ability does seem to be used. Would this not work just like Corran's ability? Thoughts?
