Idea for a new tourny type.

By Chainmaille Smith, in X-Wing

OK I have an idea for a new tourny type. This type would by the end allow good players (those that fly well, not play upgrades.)

First off I have to ask what is the best ship out of each faction. Specifically what ship w/o upgrade cards has the most movement options? After looking Echolocation I think the following.

Empire: Either Tie / Tie FO / Tie Intercepter

Rebels: Either A-Wing / E-Wing / X-Wing T-70

Scum: Syck / Kihraxz / Starviper

Also this is for small ship base only.

> best ship out of each faction

> what ship w/o upgrade cards has the most movement options

These are not necessarily the same.

Ew... no.

I'm sorry, but a game built around you coming up with your own list (for the most part, there are some who copy/paste meta builds), I'd rather not have FFG tell me what I can and cannot bring to a tournament. (Besides Epic ships, because they are well... epic. Not for standard tournament play anyway).

Even at this point, creating a ban list would just kind of ruin some of the fun of the game, which is bringing whatever you want.

If i wanted to be told what the meta was, i'd play Magic Competitively. Or Yugioh. Or Warhammer 40k.

Swiss round style with ID is obviously not going to work at this point though, and I am curious to see what FFG comes up with and releases in July.

Edit: Wait, you meant creating your own tourney for fun, didn't you? Now I feel like a troll. Actually I would try this for a single tournament.

Ah, the old "I'm a special snowflake who never gets outplayed ever and only loses because I'm the only guy not playing cheese" attitude. Always a pleasure to see you again. /sarcasm

I do have to ask, when did it become morally unacceptable to not use upgrades?

I'm just trying to make an even game. I like the cheese actually. That's part of the strategy and use of all thing available. I agree a new player with a basic set CAN NOT compete with a player with a massive collection. But that player should also be gracious.

As for the tourny I was thinking 2 players with exactly the same ship. All that is to be used are abilities native to the ship. First to 5 hits. The field should have 6 asteroid even spaced in the center. There should be space enough to fly through. And to make the game quick 10 - 15 minutes a round.

Well if you are looking to shake up the meta I had an idea of banning upgrade combinations. However that was not very popular. So maybe just like most wanted instead of banning pilot-upgrade combos make each pilot-upgrade combo cost 1 additional point for each listed upgrade attached to the pilot, much like what the Most Wanted list does with Netrunner.

For Example take the typical Soontir Fel Build. Soontir(27) w/ PTL + autothrusters + title + stealth device which will come out to 35 points in a standard tournament. However with the MW point there will be an additional 4 points added as each of the upgrades bringing Soontir to 39 points. However say a player swaps stealth device with hull upgrade since hull upgrade is not on the list it will bring it down 38 points as only 3 equipped upgrades are listed next to soontir.

Now the one thing is this might shift power from aces to the cheap grunts with no upgrades a little too much so pilots with the blank listed next to that pilot will cost 1 aditional point unless they equip an upgrade. So the Academy Pilot would cost 13 points however an Academy Pilot w/Twin Ion Engine Mk 2 would cost the same 13 points.

Here is a modified list (mostly from last year's tournament results) it will need to have the regional rotated out and replaced with new US regionals.

Here is the restricted list using the results from the Top 16 of worlds with the Top 4 of all 2015 nationals.

So instead of a ban list all this suggestion would do is increase the point cost of top meta tournament ship builds. Now with Wave 8 out and some regional finalized the list above has to be updated. But the idea is to use list In the top cuts of tournaments (Top 16 of wolds, top 4 of nationals and US regionals champion lists). Each pilot that made the top cut and the upgrades that they were equipped will be put on the list. Since we are in regional season all of last years regional results will have to be removed from the list.

Steps up on soapbox

Actually I want to remove the meta entirely. Have NONE of the players on this board seen another player just dance around you with a ship you though " can that Blue Squadron B-Wing really do that". What I want is a show of your own ability to maneuver a ship without relying on all the extras. I know this won't fly with all you acrylic token hunters out there. Take away the meta and the pilot skill levels and that leaves only one thing. Your ability to fly these ships. Most places I've played during relaxed non-tourny matches have been very nice in my area. But during a tourny I've seen some pretty bad rage quits. That's why I quit playing 40K and Magic. The player why runs lists/decks/armies someone else came up with isn't a true strategist. Those that see those lists make changes and try to adapt them. That DON'T run what everyone else is running. Those are the ones I learn from. That show me the game isn't full of " HAHA I beat you....." types. It does suck to lose, but when you face a line of opponents in a tourny and just lose over and over. Well you just don't want to play any more. I've seen it over and over in these type of games. How bout some fun being put back in. Run a game with NO special pilots. or no upgrades. The basic game is great but spice it up some. I tried an actual game where the ships actually jousted. Only straight moves and shooting. Me an another are trying a Red Bull Air race variant.

Steps down from the box.

I just want to bring some more fun back.

Actually I've played some the best players in the country in my area. Both of us having a LOTA cheese. And got my arse handed to me. But I learned from it. And if you mean snowflake by saying I don't fly what everyone else does.....yeah that's me.
