At the KC Regional running two TLT Y's and a Chewie, I came up on a Whisper/Inquisitor/Palp aces list. After wiping out the shuttle and Inquisitor, Whisper moved towards the edge of the map to take out my Y-wing. It had 4 hit points left and he rolls 4 hits and the Y evades 1 leaving him with 1 hit point. At this point he has to fly up and finish him off. Instead of 2 turning and staying on the board. I FLEW MY Y OFF THE BOARD DENYING WHISPER THE SHOT AND DESTROYING ANY CHANCE OF HIS FOCUS RE-CLOAK COMBO... It was a good feeling.
It finally happened!
I thought it's against the rules to intentionally fly off the board.
Not specifically.

No, not at all. You can't barrel roll or boost of the board. But nothing stops you from flying off it with a standard maneuver, even intentionally.
Well played.
Granted, it's not always a good idea, but if you've got a ship on its last legs and your opponent might benefit from attacking or destroying it (like IG-88A regaining a shield when it destroys a ship), I could see choosing to fly it off the board instead. Your opponent would still get the points for it though, so I'm not sure it's worth it.

One time I flew my YV off the board and denied myself the game, it was not a good feeling.

If by doing it it makes it easier to destroy another ship it might be worth it, especially if that ship is likely to be destroyed anyway. Such as a low defense ship like a Y or B with only 1 hull left.
If by flying it off and denying a uncloaked phantom a shot, so it can't recloak, which means it only has 2 evade dice and perhaps a focus... And you have a ship or two who can shoot the phantom and kill it. It may very well be worth the trade off.
You lose 25-30 points of Y-Wing but kill 40+ points of Phantom, that's a pretty good trade off IMO.

Exactly, the specific circumstances were ideal to do it which is why I was giddy like a school girl getting to do it. Probably shouldn't refer to myself as "giddy as a school girl' in retrospect.
Did you kilz da phantommmmmmmmm?

Dunno seems appropriate to me considering how rare that would be.
Well... it's not like you can do the whole fist-pump yell like you can when you do something spectacular on Vassal. That would be rude to do it in someone's face... but the feeling is still there and if some of it escapes in a giddy giggle... let it out...
at my last tournament my opponent sellf-bumped his VCX in round 2 and flew it off the board.
I've been anxiously waiting for such an opportunity.
I like it, well done.
Assuming, it helped you kill the phantom.

Yeah how does this story end?
It was an awesome gambit move. I'll say that.

And even the No Boost/Roll off the Board is fuzzy. As in, it's mostly a follow-up rule safeguard to the "MUST COMPLETE declared Boost/Roll unless" rule that came later. It's not so much that you CANT boost/roll off the board, it's that the rules now protect you from that "haha, too bad" moment.
Yes, I did kill the Phantom
I fly off the board intentionally all the time.
When I have one wounded TIE remaining and the enemy has like 3 ships left. SOMEBODY needs to report back! Or else how will they know Maarek needs to be picked up from deep space again.

Then you sir made a badass gamble that paid off, and have an epic story you have told. I salute you.
One of the best, out of the box line of thinking moves I ever saw in a game of X-Wing was something similar. Where a player elected to fly a TIE fighter off the board to deny Whisper the ability to re-cloak.
Very well played man!

It's not fuzzy, it's not a protection from an "oops" that you can choose to ignore. The FAQ says straight out you can't perform a boost or BR that would take you off the board:
can a ship decloak or perform a boost or barrel roll that would cause it to go outside the play area (and thus flee the battle field)?A: no. A ship cannot decloak or perform a boost or barrel roll if this would cause its base to go outside the play area.

Only if it results in a draw. ![]()
