50 point beginner Tournament "Echo" build

By Jessermoyers, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So I've only been playing X-wing for about a week. My available ships are limited, but here is a little list of what I've put together for a local 50 point tournament.

Tie Phantom "Echo"

-Advanced cloaking device

Tie Fighter "Dark Curse"

Which puts me right at 50 points. I really like playing with both of these ships. Any input on my list is appreciated! My collection includes...

-Core Set

-TFA Core Set

-Tie Phantom

-Rebel Aces

-Imperial Aces

Maybe I can substitute some ships or upgrades? Just curious to know what you all think!

Thanks,

Jesse

You're going to see PS9 Soontir Fel and PS11 Darth Vader, so you need to think about how you'll tackle them.

At a beginner tournament? I hope not... lol food for thought though, thanks!

Based on your collection you could opt for the following Rebel option:

[35PT] Poe Dameron

R2-D2

[15PT] A-Wing Prototype Pilot

Chardaan Refit

I hope whoever is running your beginner tournament put some other restrictions in there.

In addition to having a plan for tackling PS 9-11 you're going to see some 1 ship Turret lists and 2x Turret lists so practice getting in that donut.

Based on your collection you could opt for the following Rebel option:

[35PT] Poe Dameron

R2-D2

[15PT] A-Wing Prototype Pilot

Chardaan Refit

Probably the above. Might consider

TIE Interceptor: · Soontir Fel (27)

Push The Limit (3)

Targeting Computer (2)

TIE/fo Fighter: · "Zeta Ace" (18)

Just cause I like flying Soontir.

Phantoms are pretty awesome, but require finesse to really maximize the benefits. Lots of attack dice too!

That said, if it is truly a beginner tournament, take what you want - and have nothing to fear. Focus on getting to know the game and how it flows. Spend energy on estimating movement, not perfecting the set-up using special tricks.

Some good advice I read from interviews with the top national champs said to remember the importance of blocking, so, you may want to take a list with three low cost Tie fighters and just get in the way of the opponent's fancy moves.

Have fun.

I know it isn't in your list of ships owned, but I'd fly Oicunn + Vader+Rebel Captive + Agent Kallus. 50 points of targeted murder.

Edit- Or Oicunn + Vader + Gunner. Pick your posion.

Using Soontir or Echo after having only played for a week is going to be a bit of a challenge. I found it exceedingly difficult to fly elegantly when I first started and for those pilots to be effective, you need to be able to have a more innate sense of where your moves will place you, specifically with turrets making an appearance. Soontir gets awfully squishy without Stealth Device or Autothrusters.

Maybe fly Keyan or a pair of Tie FOs (epsilon leader and omega ace have some nice synergy)

They only have the following expansions:

So, I don't think they have access to Soontir. Parallax55 post kinda hit the nail in the head. Playing arc dodgers and/or Phantom may be a bit more difficult for new players. So, it might be easier flying a regen Poe.

Alrighty guys, I just got a few more expansions delivered today, so I have the Interceptor, Tie, Vader, and FO Tie as well. I'll be messing around a little more with builds, and let ya know.

BONUS - my roommate just got a bunch of expansions as well. (A-wing K-wing and Y-wing)

That being said, I have a lot more to go through and make a better build with pilots/upgrades!

Hey Jesse! It's Travis from our store. Glad to see you made it onto the forums!

I think you should run whatever you are most comfortable with by the time of the tournament. If you and your roommate are playing, you should have enough practice by then to know what you are best with. A killer list is fine and dandy, but flying something you are used to will make a world of difference.

So, as for the 50 point tournament (which I am the host of), does anyone on here have any ideas of how to make it more fair? We as a group have made it pretty clear amongst the more experienced players to not bring anything mean. Most of our seasoned players won't even be playing anyways. And I figure if a new player can extrapolate that Soontir is good AND fly them well enough, then they probably deserve to do well. Same goes for any good ship. But I don't think the problem will arise.

As for what I will be playing if I play, just to give you an idea of how serious the seasoned players are, is this:

Tycho w/ Experimental Interface, Title, Rage, Daredevil, Chardaan Refit

Green Sqd Pilot w/ Title, Wired, Lightning Reflexes, Refit.

Cheater read my build... lol

Okay Jokers, so this is the build that won me third place at the tournament.

Echo (30)

-Predator (3)

Epsilon Ace (17)

There were a couple of YT2400s that I didn't get to play against due to swiss rounds, and a couple of two ship builds. I lost my first match, and won the following three mayches. That allowed me to get into the top three for a three for all match. I ended up loosing to a IG2000, and a two ship imperial build. I did get 3rd for the tourney, so I'm quite happy!
