It is once again time to BEAT THE DEAD HORSE ...

By any2cards, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Dear FFG ...

It would seem that your announcement of a digital app for Descent 2nd Edition is drawing much appreciation, and dare I say it, many new people to the game ... there is anecdotal evidence that sales of your base game and expansions has increased since the announcement of the app.

With the influx of new players to this game, you know what would really complement this app and help all of those new players play the game well, and as it was intended ???

How about a new, updated, well organized FAQ?!!! With the same amount of effort that you put into your Star Wars' games FAQs?!!!

Your last update occurred in February 2016. Previous to that the last update was a year earlier in February 2015. Both of those releases barely qualify as an update, as the amount of content that is NOT in the document is stunning.

This document still comes woefully short from what it should be, and I really would hate to have all of these new folks who have invested in this game, abandon it due to a lack of an effective tool to answer typical questions that arise when playing.

So, please do us and yourself a favor, and release an updated, effective FAQ.

Thank you.

I second this.

Perhaps we should all just make a simple post with a "yes" or something to show FFG how many of us actually want this.

....Assuming they are watching the forums at all.

While we are asking for stuff how about taking the quest vault out of beta and making that into an app.

I think Zaltyre's Glossary is becoming a pretty definitive source of answers to rules questions, and is far better than the FAQ as a source of answers at this point. And everything in there does come from FFG rulings, so it is also authoritative.

To assist, whenever some new ruling is posted, I've tried to mention that it should be added to the Glossary to improve upon it. Hopefully Zaltyre catches these :)

A new FAQ from FFG would be nice, but my confidence that it would be as thorough and complete as Zaltyre's efforts is not particularly high...

YES! YES! YES! I support the idea.

Definitely, his Glossary has become, at least for me, a must have in all my games. Due to it, I bearly had had questions to solve. I either solve them through this concepts or see if the comunity had already asked them.

While we are asking for stuff how about taking the quest vault out of beta and making that into an app.

Although I would LOVE this to happen too (at least so they can fix/add somethings) I will rather have a better FAQ.

Additionally to the FAQ it would be nice to see if FFG could upload the cards that had been changed so we could print them and have the game updated,IMO.

Three things:

1) OP is right, the lack of a proper FAQ is absolutely awful. And a lot of things that are discussed or have been discussed here are not very unlikely scenarios. That really makes me wonder how much effort FFG puts in finishing their design/playtesting. I say 'finish' because I truly love this game and the FAQ is the elephant in the room. A beautiful product that doesn't get what it deserves...

2) I have said it before and will gladly say it again: Zaltyre's glossary is awesome (just like other community contributions like Atom4geVampires campaigntracker) and a better FAQ than FFG has released**. But is is unofficial, I just can't ignore that (even when the answers are from FFG employes*). I want to be the game host that can say 'no discussion here, these are the rules. Let's move on'. I don't want someone's 'opinion' when playing the game because ultimately that can lead to discussions about how the card is phrased or a thematical explanation.

3) The way I would like to see it fixed is at least a compilation of all the rules clarification the FFG team has sent us over the years. So frustrating, they have taken the effort to answer these questions, but not to put them together and upload them??grrr..

And include the printed FAQ in the latest boxed prints. It is just so nice to have something you can flip through when it is well indexed. Those few sheets of paper won't ruin them and allows for a more accessible rulebook and a more in-depth FAQ if you have read the easier part first.

Time spend arguing about rules is time not spent playing. If I wanted to argue about rules I would become a lawyer. Spoiler alert, I am not:)

*employees who have been contradicting/ correcting each other in a few cases. The ruling on whether or not rolling insignificant range is a 'no damage miss' or an 'X' miss regarding the spending of surges.

** Also, while the campaigntracker is cool, the glossary is really needed to play the game (or some other form of unofficial clarification), otherwise discussions will drag on and possibly spoil the experience. And we (the community) can't expect Zaltyre to have his glossary up to date. But that is okay, we don't pay him:) FFG however..

any2cards is absolutely right, this game both deserves and needs a better FAQ and Errata document.

While this game may not be a cash cow like the Star Wars products, it is a brand that you own, and that will never expire or cost you money to renew a license.

It really should be of a high enough priority for FFG to receive the needed attention.

I appreciate all the use the glossary is getting- I'm glad you guys find it helpful. I'm hoping to update it in the coming months.

Regarding the superFAQ- I wish it were already here as well. However, I'm not expecting to see it before the app lands. I think it is reasonable to assume that all the focus is on "Road to Legend" right now. Also, maybe my priorities are mixed up, but I'd like to see "Chains" sooner rather than later, too. We can't have our cake (quick release of the app and next expansion) and eat it too (also have a new FAQ immediately).

I am on board with the request, and I'd love to see it materialize in the future (preferably sooner). I especially agree that if the app draws an influx of new blood (given recent forum activity it appears so,) the easier it is for newcomers to drop in and play, the better for the game in the long run. No one wants to spend their evening arguing rules.

I'd only like to remind everyone to consider that the FFG Descent team is almost certainly not on vacation- they're probably busy developing new stuff for us to play with.

Yes please, I want to see a official, regularily updated FAQ or companion in the course of the next releases.

Although community contributers (Glossary, Forum Q&A, tracker etc) ensure that the game "runs" for everyone, its not guaranteed that this dedicated handfull of people will always be there to do so. I strongly hope so, of course, but communities might break apart - for example, there is apparently a lot of frustration over support and tension over the "digital divide". At the moment this only seems to bolster dedication to become involved and take a stand - wouldnt take that for granted though.

I would argue that an updated FAQ should be prioritised over new content such as the app or Chains. Because A) the updated FAQ will serve everyone playing Descent, not just the people using the app or buying the expansions. And B) a well-written FAQ can prevent rules confusion in further content. A better understanding of the game will increase the insight in the mechanics of Descent which will make you understand similar mechanics or situations faster.

I too must echo the thoughts of my fellow adventurers. At least once per encounter a question comes up that is debated for twenty minutes. In the end we sort of guess how best to solve it in the spirit of the game. An updated faq would be appreciated.

Absolutely YES!

In the last few months, there were only a few news not just Descent 2nd edition but the whole runebound universe which very distress me.

- Roundbound 3rd edition has came out and there is still no information from any kind of expansion... It is like a bastard of FFG, it seems there is no any kind of future plans with it...

- Descent 2nd edition - I can see only promises.......... the FAQ was also a funny story - correct me if i'm wrong - but only a copy/paste email post was the only thing what the community get for 21 pages of arguments in connection the future of Descent/FAQ/Etc and not a suitable official answer from the FFG.

I also don't think we should wait months for a monsters and heroes pack -I mean seriously?!- I don't think it should playtest for all eternity.... and i have not mentioned the expansions....

But Star Wars - Oh boy!- I understand Star Wars is the money maker but slowly the FFG should rename itself for Fantasy Star Wars Games. Every time i want to visit the FFG website I go down on my knee and I pray to god for only one tiny little rounebound unverse news but usually what I get --- Star Wars news fall out of my monitor...it's like Darth Vader somehow has taken over controll...

But I should post this before some stormtroopers break my door or an armada of space ships bombard my neighborhood...

Sorry for my English I'm not a native speaker but i think if someone wants to understand what i mean -he can-

Hi Kara.
Another post was made on the 2nd edition Descent forums. People are curious if FFG is going to provide a more detailed and thorough FAQ, similar to what X-Wing has received.

Rules Question:

Good afternoon FFG team, This question/concern has to do with the quality and maintenance of the FAQ for Descent 2nd Edition. There currently is a thread on the community page where certain members are expressing frustration with the quality and maintenance of Descent's FAQ vs. X-Wing's.
It's not healthy for the community when customers are expressing their frustrations like this. In X-Wing's you'll find many questions answered concerning specific situations and questions answered from FFG to its customers. X-Wing's FAQ is 16 pages currently. Descent's is 10, but many of the FAQ questions FFG have answered are not added to the FAQ. Descent's fans have compiled a list of submitted questions and maintaining them on a 3rd party site. This doesn't make the answers official. Can we have the FAQ updated to reflect what the community has gathered below? I'm confident FFG has record of every questions submitted since the inception of the game.
Thank you, -Wade Bergman Currently the owner of every Descent 2nd Edition item for sale.

I don't get why ffg went through the trouble of changing the base campaign but didn't update the rulebook at the same time.

I will admit a consolidated and comprehensive FAQ would be nice. But to be honest, I have had fun reading old threads and learning stuff from al of the community too. :D

While I certainly applaud your efforts in directing attention of our FAQ concerns to FFG, their standard response of "... we are discussing our next steps" is very unsettling, and holds very little promise given the lack of past action-ables.

Anyone who has participated in these forums for the last several years know that I have pretty much been the poster boy for begging for an improved FAQ virtually since this game's inception.

I know that others have been quick to come to FFG's defense and claim that FFG is busy working on new content, focused on H&M's, focused on digital apps, focused on Star Wars, etc. And I am certain that there is truth in these arguments. Further, I do not want to detract from the effort that Nathan and Kara have invested in communicating with us via e-mail responses to questions, etc.

But come on ... it is seriously way past time for an appropriate update for this game. I think FFG's X-Wing game has had 6 updates to its FAQ in the past year alone. And the detail contained within those FAQs are stunning when compared to what we live with when it comes to D2e. I guess all I am hoping for is an equal investment in the FAQ by FFG compared to the investment members of this own forum put into maintaining this community, resource aids, etc.

A thousand times yes! a comprehensive update to the FAQ/Errata would be very welcome!

I think Zaltyre's Glossary is becoming a pretty definitive source of answers to rules questions, and is far better than the FAQ as a source of answers at this point. And everything in there does come from FFG rulings, so it is also authoritative.

A new FAQ from FFG would be nice, but my confidence that it would be as thorough and complete as Zaltyre's efforts is not particularly high...

FFG, please hire Zaltyre for all future FAQ/Errata needs. And if he should need a dedicated assistant, well I'm currently on the job hunt and am fluent in Spanish so I can do translating as well...
