The most tense situation: heart pounding game

By Eggzavier, in Star Wars: Armada

So, my main fleet for the past few months has been a Mon Mothma led 3 CR90 / 2 MC30 build. I love the fragility and speed of the ships and the dance to get good positioning.

I recently ran against my main opponent who was running a 2 Assault Frigate / 1 MC30 / 1 CR90 build, led by Ackbar.

After two turns of maneuvering and posturing, we arrived at the following position for the start of turn 3:

(My ships are the numbered ones: the triad of CR90s on the bottom left and the two MC30s stabbing directly into the formation of two assault frigates and support ships; we brought the same squadron support, two vanilla YTs, mine are the two with the chits on the right)

Some squadron dogfighting had happened at this point, but the only exchanged shots from his ships were evaded by mine (doubly so with Foresight)

Now, normally I try to get MC30s in a good position to make a decent bombing run on a single target at the same time. Unfortunately, I got all of my ships into a good position at roughly the same time.

So, since I was the first player, I had to figure out what to do in this somewhat sticky activation order, knowing whichever of my MC30s did not activate first was going to take a hell of a pounding.

(FIRST ACTIVATION) I decided to activate Foresight (#3), the one closest to the assault frigates, first. In hindsight, it might have been better to activate the other one first, but #4 is an Admonition with Lando aboard, so I felt better about its chances of survival, and wanted to get a solid hit on Ackbar to make my opponent sweat a bit.

Despite the short range double arc and a concentrated fire order, I only managed to get one proc of APTs. However, due to a blue dice accuracy, XI7s and an Intel Officer, I was able to drop the side shields and force a discard of the brace. Foresight scooted down at speed 3 to hide in the rear arcs of the Assault frigates.

(OPPONENTS ACTIVATION) My opponent decided to follow suit and hammer my Admonition with his MC30 in a double arc shot, forgoing his Ackbar shot in the hope of getting a double APT proc. He also had TRC and ordinance experts, so I did not have much hope of Admonition surviving. Nose shot: After his shenanigans he got a hit/crit, a hit, and his double hit from TRC. Dumped an evade to discard the hit/crit and redirected some to side. Side shot: All three blacks came up as hit/crit, a double hit on one red and the TRC double hit. Ouch. Enter Lando. After the re-roll, a hit/crit, two hits, still one double hit, and an accuracy. Spend an evade to get a MM re-roll, comes up single hit, yay! Dump the spent re-direct, discard the double damage. Went from 10 damage to 3. Crazmazing. His MC30 rides off into the sunset, and mine has a missing nose.

(SECOND ACTIVATION) Admonition goes next. TL;DR: dead CR90. I think I rolled a total of 12 damage at short range with the double arc. Admonition flies off at speed 4, hoping to clear the side arc of the Assault frigates. (Spoiler alert: No. :( )

(OPPONENT) Ackbar goes. Catches the very rear of Admonition at long range with a broadside. Admonition goes down in flames, unfortunately. Couldn't resist firepower of that magnitude (plus accuracies). Speed on Ackbar drops to 1, preventing a collision with my CR90 in front there (who just narrowly avoided the other broadside from Ackbar; from this photo, I don't know how, but I know we measured it several times).

(THIRD ACTIVATION) Trying to avoid my two closest CR90s getting hit by the other Assault Frigate, I went with Mon Mothma third. I was able to get the side shot on Ackbar, stripping more shields with my TRC and then flying away, setting up for the next turn.

(OPPONENT) Next AF activates, unfortunately for him, not many targets. Turns out my CR90b down at the bottom was just barely in range, but he rolled poorly and I evaded the major threat. 1 damage I think.

(FOURTH ACTIVATION) My second TRC90a sitting in the front arc of Ackbar got a double shot and then scooted away at speed 3. Concentrated fire gave me a really good hit on Ackbar, killing him off due to his lack of shields, previous damage, and the brace I forced off earlier in the round. Boom goes the flagship.

(FIFTH ACTIVATION) With Ackbar out of the way, I activate my CR90b with SW7s, and put some damage on the second Assault Frigate from a double arc. It moves closer in at speed 3 to set for another double arc first activation of the following turn.

Turn 4 and beyond: Turns out my Foresight was a bit too far away and a bit too slow to rejoin the chase (I set an engineering command because I foolishly assumed that it would take some damage.) Between concentrated TRC90 fire and a bunch of guaranteed damage from the SW90b, the second Assault frigate went down, though it took down the CR90b.

His MC30 escaped unscathed, and I ended up with a 7-3.

Takeaways:

- I love Admonition/Lando. So survivable. Both MC30 titles are great, especially with Mon Mothma as an admiral.

- TRC90s are hammers. The SW7 ions on a 90b are great for guaranteed damage too.

- Evades work nicely against Ackbar and XI7s, though it's a bit scary not having a single brace in a list at first.

It was a great game, and my heart was pretty much in my throat from Turn 3 onward. One of the best games that I had.

Please feel free to point out what I should have done differently / rule errors (I'm sure there were some)

Not sure what you might have done differently without really seeing the whole game board and such. I usually plug in nav commands for my first orders for my MC30's. This ensures I can get guns on target (ie, double arcs), and arc dodge when I need to. Nav is worth more to me than an extra die of shooting or engineering on the first 3 rounds.

I've been wanting to do a 4CR 1Shrimp or 3CR 2 shirmp build for a while.

But I think I want more squadrons...

Also, really how good is that CR90b with SW7? Is it worth it? Or should I just take a naked CR90b for a 5th activation and keep it somewhere back?

I ran it on a whim. Really though, a double arc will give you 5 damage regardless of your rolls, 6 with a concentrated fire. With first/last activation that's 10/12 damage for 44 points. I thought it was pretty decent, and still somewhat defensible with MM.

WOAH! You have not experienced wave two AT ALL! SW7 Bs are AMAZING

I love them as defense token strippers. Do you want to blow a brace to knock 1 damage off of that front arc shot, or take 3? No? Okay, what about the CF'd side arc? No again? Okay, that's 6 damage. That's a pretty decent MC30 side arc shot--out of a 44-point ship.

Hmm I'll try it next time I need 7 points. But ****. TRC CRs.
