Hi, I have recently started running a game, and I and my players are unsure just what sort of rolls can be rerolled via fate points. I was under the impression that it was only skill and ability tests, but the players want to use it for acquisition rolls and shield (the force field version) rolls. Was there a clarification on just what you can reroll?
Use of Fate Points
My rules say they can be used for "failed tests," but I have an old version of the rules and my players have shown me many places that my book differs from theirs. I've always allowed the re-roll of acquisition checks, and that's a rather popular way to use fate points in my games. I've never had someone request to re-roll a force field check. I'm not sure how I feel about that one but if asked, I'd probably allow it.
Rolls for Acquisitions are labeled as Acquisition Tests in my copy, and therefore RAW can be Fate Pointed. It's not particularly unbalancing. Probably among the most valuable/useful rerolls you'll make, however.
Forcefields ... are not Tests. There are no degrees of success or failure. They cannot be Fate Point rerolled by RAW.
However, I might allow spending a Fate Point to negate or counter the effects of triggering an Overload, or convert the Overload effect into a 1d5 round field shutdown. I'm not sure.
