DD + Whisper

By jimmyrut, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Staying on my current theme with this:

2 x Delta Squadron Pilot (30) - TIE/x7 (-2), TIE MKII (1)
Whisper (32) - Fire Control System (2), Veteran Instincts (1), Advanced Cloaking Device (4) Recon Specialist (3)

Recon Spec is not really great on Whisper. She doesn't necessarily want to take focus, especially when under fire, so it kind of encourages taking the wrong action (having 3 focus tokens does you diddly squat if you don't roll any eyeballs! :P )

Having a focus + evade token is much better for defense than 2 focus tokens (generally speaking).

Better would be Kallus or rebel captive. In either case, you will be taking evade when coming under fire, then relying on hitting power from the FCS to get the free focus. This tactic works even better if you have gunner (at least when shooting at high agility targets). You could actually get gunner by ditching the TIE Mk2's from the deltas.

I would second the Gunner. Buzzsaw Whisper is still a killer and to be honest, losing the TIE mk II upgrade won't kill the usefulness of the Defenders.

FCS provides a TL, not a focus.

Don't discount Rec Spec. A focus can be pretty valuable with defense dice as well as on offense.

I just played in a 4-round tournament this weekend, where a friend of mine was 4-0 with 800 MOV with Whisper built this way.

(Used different ships than the Defenders for support...)

I like rebel captive in the slot better, helps deal with the more dodgy people if you can remember the trigger. Agent Kallus is my second choice, helps her survive against a higher PS ace and pump out slightly more damage.

Also holy crap you can build a list like this now, that is awesome

I don't think you understood me. I meant use the TL to re-roll attack dice so that your attack HITS. THEN Whisper gets a FREE FOCUS from her ability.

Its not a question of 'discounting' recon spec. Its a question of picking the most effective crew to get the most value out of Whisper. Sure someone can do well with Recon Spec, but I am confident anyone could do even better with kallus, captive or especially gunner (and I know, because I've used them all).

Against enemy shots (assuming barrel roll can't dodge arcs):

--Recon Spec means you have 2 focus for defense (most likely spend one on the attack)

--Kallus means you likely pick evade as an action, and if your target is 'kallus'd', you get the eyeball conversion too, and therefore likely to hit and sitting on focus + evade. If not, then you have to rely on FCS or your naked dice to get the hit (sometimes you have to focus then, which means no evade token vs return fire).

--Rebel Captive means you likely pick evade again, then stress the first shooter (so you can arc-dodge them easily next turn; and not being shot = best defense). Like Kallus, you hope to get your free focus by modifying your attack with FCS only.

--Gunner gives you the most flexibility. You can always take evade and never be tempted to take focus (unless no one is shooting at you). Thanks to FCS + Gunner, you will hit almost every time, and so on defense, you will always have focus + evade.

And focus + evade is superior defense to 2 focus tokens. It really is ;)

Or you could run with an Intel agent and see where they're going to be...and adjust your decloak off that.
