Are we a little bored of wave2?

By Blail Blerg, in Star Wars: Armada

I think switching fleet builds and styles make the game more enjoyable.

My friend, all he runs is demolisher...he does a pass..then runs away with it..it gets boring.

My way of beating it...MC80 full ackbar'd out...that'll set him straight.

I almost regret signing up for regionals because this is kind of how I have to play. I'm looking forward to Wave 3 and just getting to mess around again.

It is not automatic that everybody runs these builds. It is definitely not guaranteed that you'll run into it because not everyone buys 4+ raiders and multiple MC30s (for the APTs.)

It is also not automatic that they win. McMann has a ridiculously good tournament record but it is beatable. I think he'll be the first to admit that he thinks it is currently overpowered.

Just have fun and have a plan to deal with it. Rieekan is a great solution currently (but be prepared to face other stuff too!).

(Flotillas and Bombers will be the solution. They... will... be...)

Yup, that is why I look forward to wave 3.

Those little transports will shake the game....

I haven't played armada since January but I'll probably play it again sometime soon. But yes I am a little bored with repetition. Not a lot of variety yet but I still love the game. Rebellion and X wing are filling in the gap between armada waves for now

I am rather tired of of certain things that seems given:

- Always Demolisher.. Cant remember the last time I met an Imp list without. It is soo good...

- AFII is still the best balanced ship out there.. It is ugly and is not a part of the moves.. Every time I try something else i strugglle to get it to work as seamlessly as two AFIIs

- MC80 and Nebulon... Both underwhelming and rarely seen (the Nebulon is almost apocryphal) .. But both should have a central role due to ROTJ..

- If they set their mnd on it Imperial squadron combos is unbeatable (the "Mauler, Howl, Soontir and Dengar gang" combo is my nemesis ATM) ..

- The Raider should have added a new doctrine for the Imps.. I hasn“t really..

I would love to have FFG deviate from their usual policy (but I know they wont because.. I dont know.. ) and publish a new set of ship cards with revised points and stats such a cheaper Nebulons with a redirect token for example. ( Or a cheaper MC80/an MC80 that can take gunnery teams.. ) is would bring out all the dead content in the game and add new life to the Meta..

Agreed, because I'm a shameless slave to theme in my games. In fact, my biggest draw into Armada was the detail of the models, somewhat scaled to each other, zooming and pew-pewing around a nice looking space mat. So I don't want my games to consist of zombie YT-2400 swarms versus Demolisher and Fireballs every single time, because that's not what Star Wars looks like. I held out on even buying the AFM2 because of how out-of-place it looked, so it's quite unfortunate that it has more of a place on the table than the MC80 and Neb-B.

I know FFG will never patch the ship stats to give underwhelming Wave 1 ships a buff, but maybe they could get the Imperial Veterans treatment from X-Wing. Put an alt-paint Neb-B and MC80 in a box, price it how you need, and give them a smattering of cards and some new titles that mess with their stats and maybe solve some of their flaws. Call it "The Endor Fleet" or something. Imps could get the same thing but the VSD (improving its handling) and Raider (rounding out its stats) called "Hyperlane Patrol Fleet" or something.

Not bored, but ready for wave three for sure.

I need more time to paint everything anyways :P

Rieekan has been a good answer to Demolisher for me, so much so that despite what's in my list, I'm finding myself running Rieekan more often than not. I've started trying a variation of Biggs' Defiance and TRC90s Rieekan in addition to my B-Wing madness. He's nothing short of phenomenal. Anyone telling you he's not worth it because he only works if something dies doesn't understand what he does to the psychology of the game. The threat of Rieekan is often enough to force the enemy into a different direction. It also lets you to be much more aggressive. In a worst case scenario, he lets you turn a bad match up into a horrible grinding battle of attrittion. The worst result I had against a Clonisher build was my recent match against Ninja, which was a 5-5 loss with a 0 MoV. I got tabled, but because of objectives and Rieekan's zombie revenge, I actually had more victory points.

I should clarify my earlier comments. I'm not bored. I'm just getting fatigued. I've been playing against A LOT of Clonisher builds. I've been beating them, but it's starting to get irritating in its repetition. Meanwhile, the Rebel builds are still damned near nothing but Ackbar. The fun games involve more squadron play, but they're once again becoming fewer and farther between. Again, fine by me from a competitive standpoint because the lighter the fighter cover, the better I tend to do. When I'm actually in the game and playing, I love every second of it. I'm just finding my will to play essentially the same games over and over again waning.

I am anxiously looking forward to Wave 3. While flotillas do not cause damage when ramming, they can still block movement. I can see them being very effective as a screen against Demolisher because of their scatter token. After all, Demolisher doesn't tend to get many accuracy results. Putting a couple dodgy flotillas with squadron commands between your main line and Demolisher sounds like the kind of thing that could really screw with Demolisher's dominance.

I understand where Blail is coming from.

But I also understand that he intentionally dislikes parts of the game that would make things more entertaining for him.

When you don't accept everything, you miss out. Simple as that.

Still enjoying it, and my MonCals.

Wait what do I dislike? I mean, I dislike squadrons, but I do use them. I realize that's the true way FFG wants us to play the game and fighting against that is like running up a hill of sand.

I hate the utter idiocy of the rules and how things are so complicated and are different for different areas of rules, making them hard to remember. But I know my rules pretty well, and I don't play by any house rules.

Also, I've played vs 2 mc80. Its quite nice! Not perfect, but a reliable list. I have it written down as an option, but after seeing it play, its not like there's a whole lot from that game I really NEEED to play.

Clonisher 5ship sounds fun to me.

I've seen it all though. I have some crazy builds. I've got old builds from wave1 that have been wave2 updated. I've seen really off the wall builds and copied them. Yeah. I've seen most of the things people have tried.

Frankly, I don't get enough opportunity to play to be bored yet. I usually go through dry spells where all I get to do is come on forums and disagree with people for fun and then play all day at a tournament, often with zero actual play in between.

Its the theorycrafting that keeps it alive for me. Finding those edge builds and then never getting a chance to play them...I have like 6 builds sitting in warlords it will take me until wave 3 to try. If ever.

Sure, there are a limited number of fleet archetypes with small variations, but the real permutations that matter are where you insert different opponents and their play styles. I probably don't play my "Stairstep Fireball" fleet the same way my buddy would play it, etc.

I also almost NEVER play rebels. If I ever start getting bored i'll just switch sides to the bad guys and it will be like a whole new game.

People still use Demolisher? I played a friendly game today and threw together a modified version of my Wave 1 list which included Demolisher, but that was the first time I've seen anyone use the title since Wave 2 came out. This is with probably 3 tournaments and multiple friendly matches in there. I've also not really seen Clontropers 4 Raider / 1 Gladiator list either. I have seen multiple small ship lists to get the activation advantage, but it tends to rely on the amount of practice the person has had as to how well it does.

I hope m earlier post didn't make it sound like I'm bored. I have a lot I'm working on figuring out. I'm okay on the 2-3 ship carrier fleet. I REALLY got tabled on my first attempt at a Mc30-TRC90 high activation list. My next planned purchase is another AF2, then I plan to look at 2 AF2-2 Mc30 lists. I can't see getting bored anytime soon.

Son... where have you been for the past 5 months? Demolisher is all that this forum has been talking about.

SW: Rebellion's release has extended my hiatus from Armada, which started with a few vacations and holidays (easter instead of playing for instance), but I'm starting to reach the end of my interest for Imperial lists, which I've been running nearly exclusively since Wave 2 was released. I've been trying to find builds that aren't the blue/black Demolisher-Raider assault lists to have fun flying but I can't find a satisfactory one. I'm ready to jump factions to the Rebels and start trying to find an interesting build with them to keep adjusting.

Not sure if the Gozantis will really add anything interesting for capital-ship fans like me except for cheap activations. Blue dice throwing will have the same problems Raiders have, and all they can do is soak attacks and block movement.

I'm hoping the next Imperial ship can breathe some life into VSDs, which sorely need some kind of incentive to come back to competitiveness. Just something that gives Imperials a new avenue of shipbuilding that isn't Rhymer ball buffing or enhancing blue/black assaults.

I tend to not come on the forum a lot, as is now painfully evident.

Sorry, didn't mean to come off as condecsending, I just find it incredible that there is a meta out there where Demolisher is non-existent.

You weren't, so no worries. To be honest, there isn't really an overwhelming "meta" that I've seen around here (at least when I've been playing). Sure there's more than a few Ackbar MC80/ 2 AF builds (including me), but it's not really overbearing, and I've never actually faced off against the same build in a tourney.

There's a good number of playable fleets. I've watched events won by most admirals and ship combinations. I look forward to wave 3, but I'm happy having a break to play Rebellion or X-Wing.

Honestly, I think its starting to get a little tepid. And I think I've at least heard of most of the really strong or unusual builds now.

There's a few things I haven't tried, like Rieekan, but I think we're reaching the min-max-ing of this stage of the game.

The game is fun, but there's only a certain small selection of choices. Cmon, let's get wave3.

I'm not at all fatigued. I don't want a host of new expansions right now.

I'm looking at ships that people insist are garbage.

Except VSDs, VSDs are irredeamable.

I'm looking at ships that people insist are garbage.

Except VSDs, VSDs are irredeamable.

Imo, there are only 2 ships I consider garbage, and one of them still has its great uses:

The raider is really only good to add activations or in like those 5 ship lists.

The other is the VSD which REALLY NEEDS new toys.

All the rest have great uses. Neb B and MC80 have taken games around here to great effect.

I saw a new way of thinking with ISDs recently and I think it'll breathe new life into the ship if the player is good.

Shrimps... can be **** good.

Nebs suck. Sure, they've got some decent titles, but overall they are CRAP.

The Imps desperately need additional activations, and honestly even a naked R1 cam poor frightening levels of damage out of its front arc.

I'll take a dozen naked Raiders and Nebs over an equivalent points of VSDs.

Oh, there IS one thing I'm bored with: the objectives. They've been played to DEATH by now.

Whaaaat. Nebs? Honestly, I haven't tried them much in wave2, but in wave1, they shredded me well enough with squadrons that I was impressed by them.

Yeah. You know what I'm tired of.

EVERYONE PICKING INTEL SWEEP.

The Galactic Empire and the Kuat Drive Yards would ask that you retract these heinous statements IMMEDIATELY.

Ton for ton, you cannot find a more efficient squadron carrier than the beautiful, angular VSD.

Also, three of them just won a Regional in Ohio on the planet "Earth".

It's like the VSD motto says: "We may be rolling at you slowly, but out bombers are going to sting fast."

I am starting to fizzle out again on armada as i feel ive unlocked my ideal build for wave2 imps. I will hit events for that swag and after regionals play rebels if I play but i am more than ready for mk3 and all new dojo.
