Are we a little bored of wave2?

By Blail Blerg, in Star Wars: Armada

Honestly, I think its starting to get a little tepid. And I think I've at least heard of most of the really strong or unusual builds now.

There's a few things I haven't tried, like Rieekan, but I think we're reaching the min-max-ing of this stage of the game.

The game is fun, but there's only a certain small selection of choices. Cmon, let's get wave3.

I'm getting a little fatigued. I've been going pretty heavy lately. Typically at this point I'm primed for a break, which I may take after Regionals while we wait for wave 3.

There's a few things I haven't tried, like Rieekan,

For me:

Mc80 garm,

Multiple Torpedos,

More than token squadrons,

And thats just the rebels I can think of.

Sooooo much more fun to be had!

wave 2 NO

Tournament season Yes

No...

Sorry not bored yet.

I think over analysing on the internet can detract from the fun of the game. Its so easy to get lost in a quagmire of netlisting min maxing and group think. Honestly, I'm still finding every game to be tense and really interesting.

Try something unorthodox. There, problem solved.

If you're bored with wave 2 it could be a long year. I Think wave 3 is going to change the flavor of existing builds, but that's it. I can see using them to supplement existing builds( like controlling squads for an all mc30 build), but I don't think they'll create completely new stuff.

Bored? I just friggin' STARTED

We have gradually shifted towards other games at the moment, SWA is still on 2-3 times a months as a casual freeflight. I dont see any reason to invest any more money into this, so some of the more "esoteric" builds will have to stay on the wishlist as long as I cannot grab the necessary ships on ebay or meet some player who will lend them out for a game.

Still, its not boredom - there is just a finite number of fleets which you can compose from what we have available, and its not all that exiting anymore after the 5th or 10th flight. I will grab 1-2 flotillas on release and be happy the wave 3 is a moneysaver at some point, then wait if wave IV is happening.

I am rather tired of of certain things that seems given:

- Always Demolisher.. Cant remember the last time I met an Imp list without. It is soo good...

- AFII is still the best balanced ship out there.. It is ugly and is not a part of the moves.. Every time I try something else i strugglle to get it to work as seamlessly as two AFIIs

- MC80 and Nebulon... Both underwhelming and rarely seen (the Nebulon is almost apocryphal) .. But both should have a central role due to ROTJ..

- If they set their mnd on it Imperial squadron combos is unbeatable (the "Mauler, Howl, Soontir and Dengar gang" combo is my nemesis ATM) ..

- The Raider should have added a new doctrine for the Imps.. I hasn´t really..

I would love to have FFG deviate from their usual policy (but I know they wont because.. I dont know.. ) and publish a new set of ship cards with revised points and stats such a cheaper Nebulons with a redirect token for example. ( Or a cheaper MC80/an MC80 that can take gunnery teams.. ) is would bring out all the dead content in the game and add new life to the Meta..

I think the reason you see less variety is that most players lack the abundant pool of models one would need to build all those specialist fleets. Everybody and his dog has at least one GSD, so if you happen to not own 2-3 VSDs or ISDs you pretty much always include a GSD, and since demo is arguably the strongest upgrade card in the game 9,9/10 times you bring him. Same goes for the AFII, most players own at least one, they are sturdy workhorses in almost any fleet constellation - so you see them in almost any game.

Nebs perform good if upgraded with titles, but a single Neb is often difficult to fit into a fleet concept. A second one helps to emphasise front arc fire power, and paired Nebs with titles can actually bring something to the table, but most non-tourney players who I know dont have a second model at hands.

Nope. I don't feel like I've even begun to probe the ins and outs of Wave 2. I still have yet to mess around with MC80's and Raiders, really, as well as half the named R&V squadrons.

seeing I only have one gaming day a month it will be years before I get board with the ships I have, even planning on the next game to be played around a 17 inch long "Battle Star." :D that the players (hopefully 6 of them) have to gang up on, with the player doing the most points of damage to minus damage takes wins.

I think I have enough ideas for battles to be happy for 30 years or so. :)

I don't know how any rebel player doesn't have two Nebulons. One from the starter and one for the titles and xi7... =)

Playing Nebulons without titles is crazy.

I am not completely bored, but I think we're slowly seeing some things that need an eye kept on. Demolisher may need a nerf or at least a Rebel counterpart given it's prevalence. The MC80/VSD/NebB may need some upgrade love down the road as well. Neb's without titles tend to be a bit bland.

I also agree that with 9 ships, it's starting to get stale for variety. But the flotillas should help alleviate that a bit. I think the high activation lists are here to stay. It's simple math as why it's effective.

I hope Rebel fighters become more of a threat with the new units. Right now, I feel that it's WAY easier to build a threatening Imperial fighter list for WAY less.

Not bored, and that's due in large part to the online community keeping things interesting. :D

BiggIRL has run several tournaments now that have brought out the best in builds and players alike. MattShadowlord's latest tournament has teams striving to make lists within certain limitations while still remaining competitive.

Armada is far from stagnant - it's alive and kicking arse! :D

never

You can get a 2 MC30, 3 CR90 build, decked out for sub 330 if youre interested.

Nobody seems to be.

I think that those of us like me, that haven't gotten to play more than a handful of games, are still very excited about Armada in general. I've never even flown an Alliance fleet let alone played all the strategies available!

Never!

I understand where Blail is coming from.

But I also understand that he intentionally dislikes parts of the game that would make things more entertaining for him.

When you don't accept everything, you miss out. Simple as that.

Still enjoying it, and my MonCals.

I think switching fleet builds and styles make the game more enjoyable.

My friend, all he runs is demolisher...he does a pass..then runs away with it..it gets boring.

My way of beating it...MC80 full ackbar'd out...that'll set him straight.

I almost regret signing up for regionals because this is kind of how I have to play. I'm looking forward to Wave 3 and just getting to mess around again.

It's kinda sad we have to literally focus fleet building on beating fleets built around Demolisher.

See I do have hope FFG puts in something specifically to counter Demolisher, that sorta hard counter will really mess with people automatically falling back to having Demo in their fleets.

It is not automatic that everybody runs these builds. It is definitely not guaranteed that you'll run into it because not everyone buys 4+ raiders and multiple MC30s (for the APTs.)

It is also not automatic that they win. McMann has a ridiculously good tournament record but it is beatable. I think he'll be the first to admit that he thinks it is currently overpowered.

Just have fun and have a plan to deal with it. Rieekan is a great solution currently (but be prepared to face other stuff too!).

(Flotillas and Bombers will be the solution. They... will... be...)
