Direct Hit! (& R5-D8)

By SlaveofChrist, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi Folks! I need your help on confirming or clarifying a ruling I made on a recent game for me please :D .

I had a Y-wing equipped with R5-D8

and I received (after my shields were gone) a "Direct Hit!" damage card from a critical hit

and the following turn, I thought "Hey! I can use R5-D8 to fix this, sweet!" but...then I read it over and noticed that it didn't have an "Action:" spot on the card, in which case there was no way to turn this card over. So, I concluded that I was unable to use R5-D8 with his ability and was stuck with this card <_< .

As I was playing this game with my son, I wanted to (as I was not 100% certain) give him the better call. After though, I wanted to know if I had interpreted this correctly.

Thoughts or corrections?

He discards face down only, and barring special abilities you will never flip a direct hit down.

Ok, very good - makes sense. Thanks for your help :) .

You had your answer and the reason for it. R5-D8 doesn't work on a Direct Hit because it's not a face-down card. If it were face-down then it wouldn't even be a Direct Hit although if you get to choose to discard a face-down card you may know what it is.

It's nice to confirm someone is playing a card/combo correctly.

It's worth pointing out that an aweful lot of people play "direct hit" as "deal a second damage card then flip this face down" and cards like this are exactly why doing that is a very bad idea.

Yeah as Forgottenlore says. The Direct Hit! cards counts as two damage itself, it does not mean you deal out a second damage card.

So if you can flip it face down or discard it, you could get rid of two damage.

As an aside, in Armada however that version of Direct Hit! does actually say to deal an additional face down card.

If you can flip it facedown you can get rid of ONE damage. Even facedown it's still a damage card ;)

The way we mark direct hits is to keep this card face up and add a damage token. :)

Yeah I know... I think I hit post before I intended to :) I meant if you could discard it you could rid of two damage, but if you just flip it then yes you only get rid of one.

Really? Why? Why would you need to do that???

It makes counting up the damage easier. You don't have to remember that some of the face up text is relevant when seeing if the ship us destroyed 3 turns later.

I have seen A LOT of people do this and always feel like I am saying "I know you just met me 5 minutes ago and you guys all have an established group you've been playing together for years, but your making a fundamental mistake with the rules".

As mentioned some may think that makes it easier to keep track of things.

If you want to wean someone of that see if you can't tag them a few times using Rexlar. If he deals them a Direct hit and they then convert that into two face down cards you then spend a Focus token forcing them to turn all of those cards face-up again and because at least one of them is a Direct Hit they'd then take another card worth of damage because they aren't playing it correctly.

Ooooh... sneaky. I like that!

It's gonna make them change the way they keep track of damage. I like using the critical tokens for any extra damage from Direct Hits.
