Gauging interest in a 'Custom X-wing league'

By Babaganoosh, in X-Wing

Hey there,

It's no secret that many of us like to come up with our own custom ships, pilots and upgrades, but even the best-conceived of these almost never see any use.

Is anyone else interested in getting together to develop and produce a set of custom cards, and then play with them in a Vassal league?

I imagine the process would work something like this:

Card Development:

1: Collect card submissions

2: Submissions voted on, top submissions move on to next step

3: Top submissions are opened up to development - players can submit modified versions of the original submission

4: Modified top submissions voted on, winners move on

5: Final cards are sent to a panel of x-wing experts for an up/down vote.

6: Accepted cards are implemented in Vassal expansion to the x-wing module

Custom league:

Regular tournament structure; all lists must include custom cards

Any of you interested in something like that?

This sounds very interesting, but I don't have access to Vassal, so I couldn't participate in the play testing.(on Vassal at least) I've said for along time, that I wish there was a database of all the community created and agreed upon custom cards and ships that anyone could view and use. That way if I happened to go across the country or to another continent, everyone I played against would all be cool with and know about any custom cards I wanted to use and I would know about the ones they wanted to use. It could be "official" and be a part of the FFG site or these forums and anyone could use them. It would be a way to expand the game, without releasing expansions that wouldn't sell as well and not be worth it for FFG, but still wanted by alot of die hard fans. Alot of fans want certain ships or card packs or whatever, but an online resource would be a way to accomplish this goal without costing FFG or the community much money. I know that was all a bit out of the context of your OP, but it was kinda related so I ran with it. Sorry.

No worries- part of the appeal of this would be having a list of well-vetted custom cards that people could look at and use. The custom league is just the cake at the end of the process.

So what power level are we balancing around?

Xwing and bwing are balanced with each other (close enough to play, anyway) but neither holds a candle to the x7 defender or FCS Lothal Rebel. How close to the competitive edge should we take it?

It's a good question... I'd say that the balance target would be close to or just a smidge below the current competitive cards... essentially the same approach as the actual game developers. Try to introduce interesting and new cards that either introduce new ways to play, or reinvigorate old cards.

I also love the implicit assumption that this will definitely happen. This project would only be possible if we had a fair-sized player base supporting it with submissions and votes. that level of participation is not easy to get.

(So speak up if you see this post and want to be part of this, or it will probably not happen!)

Although I don't currently have the time to assist in dev or play testing, I love the sound of this. The game I played previously (HeroScape) has been effectively kept alive through the customs scene. Customs could become especially meaningful if FFG veers away from the EU (still remains to be seen).

Does anyone have a link to a custom card generator? That's a good place to start. Then I guess just start taking submissions. Once you get a few submissions, we can vote and then start tweeking them.

I'd be very interested in something like this and will watch this topic closely.

Strange Eons is a great custom card maker that you can get for free, and there's an x-wing module for it. I imagine that's what we'd use as the standard software for this project.

I'll float the idea for this project on an upcoming Shuttle Tydirium podcast and advertise a little. If enough people seem interested I'll start this up; should just be a few weeks to get everything ironed out.

Count me in Babaganoosh!

I've been considering something similar, but not with full custom cards. Instead, players would work with what already exists in the game, and work to make everything playable at a top level. Then, after the community came to a consensus, a sort of round robin tournament/ league would be competed in.

For example, these are some of my ideas for the B-wing pilots-

B-wings

Dagger Sq. Pilot- Gain EPT slot

Ibtisam- Reduce squad point cost by one (27 points), and errata last line of card text to read- "...You may reroll 2 of your dice."

Keyan Farlander- Reduce squad point cost by one (28)

Ten Numb- Reduce squad point cost by two (29)

Other members of the community would then evaluate the changes together and determine if they were fair and if not, more suggestions/changes would be made.

I like the idea of custom card creation, and if this catches on I would be interested in participating. But what's holding me back is model/card implementation into Vassal. If we could get to the point where someone was willing to work with us to get custom made material into the module, I would be all in.

I actually tried to set up a database over the weekend, but it's currently in the third page:

I would love to merge that thread into this one. I will go ahead and submit my StealthX and Star Jewel into this contest if it gets off the ground. I'm excited to see if this works!

I loved heroscape back in the day. I'm still sad it was discontinued. What forums are they using nowadays? I'll have to go see if there's a playgroup in my area

http://www.heroscapers.com is the most active one.

We could make 1 custom card for each League "tournament" and also for the sake of interest, make 1 ship cost efficient and then your list must use the custom card or the cost reduced ship?

I like designing cards. I'm in.

I've decided to go ahead with this project, since there has been enough interest between these forums and reddit. I plan to start in about 2 weeks, give or take. I want a little time to think through the submission/development process, to maybe line up some (very modest) prize support, and to plug the custom card league on the Shuttle Tydirium Podcast, which is launching this week.

I don't see a problem with tweaking existing cards, or introducing new cards with similar abilities, etc. I think a generic B-wing with an EPT slot would be pretty cool. And you could certainly submit 'fix' cards intended to buff existing cards... for example instead of introducing a discounted Ibitisam, Keyan, or Ten numb, you could have a B-wing specific card that accomplishes the same thing. Maybe like a chaardan refit for B-wings. Or something more creative. But even modified versions of older cards would be fine I think. I didn't plan on making any restrictions on what cards participants can submit. The voting can decide whether or not the card idea is good or not (instead of me deciding beforehand).

Yeah - I don't think there should be any restrictions on entries, so you could definitely just submit re-priced cards... although I suppose we would want everything to have a unique name in order to avoid confusion.

I think MajorJuggler has done the math on most or all of the ships and upgrades to bring them to a roughly equal power level. I'm not sure how up to date it is, but if you can find him his house rules are in his Sig.

Yeah - the house rules thread is really a gold mine, not only for just implementing MJ's fixes, but also for designing new cards. Using his values as a starting point is a good way to start costing new pilots and ships.

Is there anyone who doesn't? And if there is, what is wrong with them? ;)
