Scum and Villainy Episode 30: What’s all the fuss over Inertial Dampeners?

By Kelvan, in X-Wing

...all I wanted to say was that I think tournaments have already edged out the casual gamer....except for those that know they are just going to play at the bottom tables and like playing a bunch of games in one day.

I think the portions of the latter group are growing too is my point. Most casual gamers don't know/care about this stuff. While there are some casual gamers that quit going to tournaments, my guess is they are replaced by more who are going and getting into the game.

I have some really strong opinions to add to this discussion... I'm not afraid to say that I thought Kelvan's English accent was spectacular.

Has it ever occurred to you that you are simply taking advantage of Fly Casual? In a different manner than most, but still benefitting from it? According to you, your favorite strategies simply wouldn't work against a WAAC type player.

I take advantage of fly sloppy, yes. Sometimes my opponents make mistakes and I capitalize on them.

And they wouldn't work against another WAAC player because they wouldn't intentionally miss all of their action opportunities and assume they'd be granted them.

I'd prefer everyone just be WAAC players that are polite and never forget anything to a bunch of fly casuals, many of which will get angry when they're punished for their own mistakes.

My first thought on it was "You know, I bet this is what I'd sound like if I tried to butcher a US accent". Take that as you will :P

I'll add my input to Kelvan's Omega Leader issue.

I'm not shy about spending that target lock. There are times when I don't, such as when the locked ship has some massive firepower and/or OL is the only one that can really stand up to it efficiently (such as in the case of Whisper). Against a lot of more basic ships, though, I'll either Focus instead of locking or I'll spend the target lock. If you're concentrating fire, chances are the target ship will spend those tokens anyway, so there's not much lost for allowing them to modify their greens against Omega Leader. Furthermore, I actually like to let some ships get shots on Omega Leader (although not the whole list). If facing a 3-ship list, say, I'm happy to allow 2 of them to get shots on OL. I can lock one of them to neuter its offense, and green dice + an Evade token will typically be enough to take minimal damage from the other ship. It depends on a lot of other factors, of course, but this is a rough approximation. This lets my other ships, who might be more offensively efficient, to get some work done while ships are going after Omega Leader. Overall, I'm generally happy when she's getting shot, because she tanks and runs very well. It's sort of the Imperial version of a Rebel regen ship taking hits and running.

I guess overall I don't treat her like an ace, I treat her like a jouster with some really good anti-ace tech.

Regarding the bit around 60m in asking about being able to check your opponents' dials, don't the dial reference inserts say on them that you must present them if your opponent asks to see them?

I suppose I should clarify again.

FFG did not release an official press release through a "little Canadian twitch stream" I was forwarded a copy of an email response from FFG before the show went live which I dug in to to make sure it was an official FFG response. After doing my due diligence I was convinced it was a genuine copy of an email from FFG I spoke about it on the twitch stream.

I am a little tired of hearing about how stupid it was of FFG and it is also a little insulting to my work, that I take great pride in.

Other than that, I enjoyed the show but am tired of this being spread around.

Just for correctness' sake: that was Ryan who drew with Zach at Hoth Open. I detest games going to time, much less draws, and I would have suicidally stormed the fortress if necessary :)

I'll keep this in mind. I also had a dummy moment when i realized a week after I started flying the list that i didn't need her to keep the shuttles from moving. That's freed her up quite a bit.

Noted! Apologies!

Whining

Noted! Apologies!

I just seems ludicrous to me that people would assume that FFG asked me to read an official statement and that I was then to stupid to market that fact.

If I suddenly become the spokes person for FFG, trust me you will know about it...

And your british accent was better than mine :P

That ship is the least sexy ship in a faction jammed full of unsexy ships.

The Hwk would like to have a word with you.

Also Paul loves Ezra.

I just want to second this. I see a lot of people hold onto the Target Lock without good reason. The additional piece I find is that Omega Leader isn't as effective if he is your only ace. He needs something to draw heat to make it to endgame.

What email should we send our Attack Shuttles lists to? I must have missed it. I have a fun list I'd like to send in

The HWK is a beautiful swan. I'm not saying nobody should like the attack shuttle, or that it's not a perfectly good ship, but it's not very inspiring. It doesn't move the soul (contrast with, say, the Lambda Shuttle, which is a symphony of interstellar architecture).

OK, since when did everyone become Electric Light Orchestra fans? Would love to play an ELO game. Sweet Talking Woman is my personal favorite.

How many weeks could you stretch out a league where players can only use a given card in once. You can run as many crack shots in your list as you want one week but you can't use it in another list for the rest of that league season. How long till most players run out of flyable lists?

I prefer the band The Move.

You can send them to [email protected] or [email protected].

Pheaver tells it like it is.

So the podcast crew is potentially going to do a semi regular FFG RPG. Any interest from the holonet in hearing these recordings?

I don't know if I personally would have much interest, but there was a time when I was first getting in to podcasts where listening to an RPG podcast got me through long paper work filing days at work. And with a set up already in place, I think it could be worth your time.
