"Twilight Imperium-Wars"

By David Spangler, in The Crystal Ball and The Wishing Well

Reading about Runewars--and getting more excited about it as I do--makes me really long for an equivalent sci-fi game, with heros, quests, tactical battles, and so on, set in the TI universe. I've long hoped that Runequest might be adapted in some way for a TI universe: maybe a planetary exploration game or planetary invasion battles, but reading about Runewars just heightens the desire for a really good, deep, hero-level TI game with both planetary and interstellar adventures, battles and the like.

Christian and Corey, you make such fantastic games. Surely an adventure/tac battle game in the TI universe isn't beyond your combined talents!

At least we will get a Twilight Imperium Wars in the form of the new Dune. It probably won't be strictly speaking a hero level tactics game, but you'll have prominent figures and regular troops (if Dune is any indication)...and they'll be tactics a plenty.

A sci-fi adventure game - like ME: Quest, Runebound or the like would be awesome. Especially if characters could travel between systems, have adventures and improve their tech - that would be a game I buy immediately! :D

Cheers,

Giles.

I want an in depth TI battle game that isn't magblast. So maybe boardgame, maybe something like the new warhammer rpg where it's in the middle of boardgame/rpg.

What I would want is this; you and your opponents fight over a planet. You get a navy, army and politicians based on faction. You would get to resource manage these, and also invest in research and growth and find a balance between the 2. You use these 3 fields to defeat opponents and vie for power. So a planet may have x number of regions (to include areas in orbit) and each area might be more or less valuable to your army politicians or fleet. The key difference here from TI3rdEd is that where as TI has turns that could easily be years, this game would have turns that would be a week if not a few days. The planets themselves would have the prerequisite forces/requirements for each of the 3 fields to achieve victory as well as any special rules for the planet. Try for peaceful annexation or violent overthrow of the native governement, guard the space docks to achieve free trade or blockade the system, there s many scenarios that could be available here, with expansions easily available as TI has many races and planets
