Question about the Klatooinian's Starting Abilities

Hey guys I have a question about the Klatooinian species for character creation. One of my players is looking to play as a Klatooinian Technician, but he is disappointed that none of the Technician specializations offer a combat skill as a career skill.

He was wondering if he could use his first ability to put a free rank in his Ranged Light Skill as his first skill rank, and if he could use his second starting ability (the non- career ability) to put a second free rank into his Ranged Light, for a total of two. I looked in Dangerous Covenants and it doesn't say anything against doubling up.

Reading through it initially I was going to allow the player to do it, but I'd like to get feedback from fellow GMs.

I don't see why not. Mechanic has Brawl. If he wanted to start in Engineer he could get Range Light as a career skill.

I've used it before and it's a good way to go -- and one of the reasons I like the species.

Nothing I've read in the books precludes it as a possibility and there's a lot of precedent supporting species specific bonus skills being able to stack with career skills.

Oh yeah I forgot that the Mechanic tree adds Brawl as a Career Skill. He really likes the idea of playing an Outlaw Tech who loves to tinker with his gear.

Like a Gadgeteer? :P i like there are multiple "make tech work" specialisations in EotE, it fits so well in the theme.
