New Releases of Existing Ships

By FluxCapcitr, in X-Wing

The speculation and discussion on future expansions has made me curious. Moving forward, what sort of balance would you all prefer that FFG use for implementing new ships and re-releasing old ones (e.g. 50/50, 80/20)?

I'd go for 75% re-release and 25% new release. I personally prefer to fly well-known ships such as TIE Fighters, Interceptors, X-Wings, B-Wings, etc... I'd be more willing to buy new pilots, upgrades, and titles for the already released ships, than delving deeper and deeper into obscure corners of the EU. I'm up for more Rebels and new movie additions, but while I've played the computer games and read many of the books, I just don't think I'd have as much fun flying some of the EU ships as I would ships from the movies.

PS - I realize the FFG will end up doing what will make them money and further the game. This isn't a prediction thread, just a personal preference poll.

EDIT: After publishing the post, I realize the title could be clearer, is there a way to edit that?

I like the Wave-Aces release they have used.

The problem with only using "well known ships" is that they weren't always that way.

The ships you love were new once, and only became "well known" because people like us made it so.

It's up to us to carry that torch, so that in 30 years our kids can ***** about not liking the new t-90 x-wings when the t-70's were clearly the best ship ever.

I really don't need more ships that I already have, new paint jobs or not. My collection has reached the point where it's actually becoming a pain to store and organize, and I have significantly more of some ships than can be played in a 100 or even 150-200 point game.

New cards, pilots, etc? Go for it, but if we can't find a way to do it without constantly re-releasing old models then I would rather just slow the release schedule down to a crawl until we have new official ships to add. Otherwise keep the EU ships coming.

There's a bit of a difference between ships you can see in the films (and in dozens of videogames and comics), and the odd Bunnies in the game which might only have featured in a discontinued mmo or as an upgrade in an outdated RTS.

If you enjoy them, good, glad they are there for you, but I can completely understand that a lot of players arnt interested in them. And with new StarWars kicking up more cassual interest (and perhaps new fans all together) I would imagine there are increasingly going to be players with little EU knowledge.

I'm a bit concerned with the "Redacted Spoilers" to go along with the T-70 etc. that the OT OG ships might end up marginalized in the near future. I hope not but the current designers are over-all doing a great job and the older ships are starting to look less "polished" maybe?

So what specific Pilots would you like to see and what do you think theirs PS and abilities should be?

Playing HotAC has strengthen my belief that future growth at some point will be more Aces packs with Pilots on multiple ships, more titles, and shenanigan upgrades.

I admit I have never played the scenarios. How do they compare to HotAC. I could see a branch RPGish with its own cards and system someday. Would not be against that in the near future.

They might do a "Build it yourself" line of pilots. Unique or non-unique pilots where 'everything' is bought with squad points. Want a pilot ability like Tycho or Han? You can pick from a list of skills with a corresponding point cost. The PS level of a pilot might also vary depending on the ship being flown. Han as a 9 on the 1300 but a 7 on a 2400 as an example. This would be X-Wing Ala Carte.

Think about it. Being able to custom build a pilot ability, EPT and ship upgrades without being restricted to specific ships. A PS4 pilot in an A-Wing with Soontir's ability and several new upfeades. Not very thematic nut it would add new challenges to the game.

A more workable version of that idea might be to have the pilot cards in isolation to the ship's themselves. So Fel coul pilot a shuttle if you felt like it. Attack Wing currently has this approach.

Attack wing ideas are not good ideas.

A cursory overview, the games have similar looks for cards, and templates. I am sure there are some differences aside from action names/icons, but at a glance someone unfamiliar with the ships/franchises might mistake them for the same game.

Im kinda surprised they havent done that yet. Ships like the old X-wing are so pointless in a game named after them! Isnt even any cards in the expansion worth getting multiples of. TIE Fighters arent much better but at least theyre cheap enough to be snuck into pretty much any list.

Perfectly fine with a TFA Falcon or Hera in a B-Wing, but you should be able to buy re-released pilots separately.

Well, it's Wizkids. So, good ideas are destroyed by lack of playtesting. Their costing formula for the ships destroyed balance from day one. And once you get to the point of having to vastly restrict certain pilots (Vader), you might as well just use the system X-wing uses. Especially since you can't really future proof them.
