What to buy?

By Asikel, in X-Wing

Hello all,

In the not too distant past I sold off my collection which included multiples of everything through Wave 7 and one of each epic ship. Now that I have made the cross-country move and a small play group has started to coalesce, I am inclined towards getting back into the game. However, I will not be spending the money to reassemble my entire collection. My preference at this point would be to focus on one faction and buy back in. I am looking for suggestions on what to buy and not spend more than $250 (at MM or CSI prices since I don't have a FLGS that sells X-wing), including at least one core set. Ready...go!

tfa core set

tie fighter expansion

tie advanced expansion

raider

assault carrier

imperial aces

tie advanced prototype

Imperial vets

TFA core set

4 y wings

4 t70

Baby blues FTW!

Buy what you want.

Buy what you want sounds like a good suggestions. The more interesting question is: What do you want to buy?

About $250 gives you any competitive list of the current meta without problem + one core set.

U-boots? Should, work.

The new hot palpatine tripple aces? Yeah, that might work just barely with miniature market prices, it would be about ~$285 at recommended retail prices.

So it really comes down to what list you want to play and how and if you want to expand afterwards, As imperial ace player and with the budget restrictions I would try to start with:

An old Core set and following expansions: ( ~ $28 for the core)

The Inquisitor ( $11.29 at MM)

TIE/Fo ( $10.79 at MM)

Lambda Shuttle ( $21.39 at MM)

Optional for tournament (need cards only, though the huge ships can be for sure fun as well): ( ~ $205 at retailers recommendation, more like $160 at MM)

A-Wing for Push the Limit

Star Viper for Autothrusters

Raider for Palpatine (though the TIE/Advanced upgrades and the TIE/Advanced are quite useful as well)

Assault Carrier (Wampa, the new third ace for palp aces)

Optional to get more ace list variations, especially if I proxy cards anyway: ( ~$35 )

Imperial Aces or TIE Interceptor for having 3 Interceptors.

Would be useful for cards as well as you get 2x Push the Limit from the Aces expansions and 2x the Royal Guard Title, Soontir Fel from the Interceptor Expansion is naturally awesome with those upgrades.

If you add the Slave One for $21.39 and you can basically fly every Empire Ace which does not involve Darth Vader for $260 within the competitive tournament format even. You would need a TIE/Advance Expansion and a Millenium Falcon to add Vader. One small problem though, the star viper is out of stock at mm, but as you said you are just want to play with friends in your local area without tournaments, so I can only recommend to leave out everything that gets bought just for the cards.

This will change the list to:

Both Core Sets

TIE Interceptor expansion

TIE Advanced Expansion

The Inquisitor's TIE Expansion

TIE Phantom Expansion

Lambda Shuttle

For a Grand Total of $122.03 at Miniatur Market. Add whatever Large or Epic ships you fancy on top of that, plus a Gozanti Assault Cruiser + 4 TIE-Fighter for a all Full TIE-Swarm would be at $215.

Going $25 over Budget and removing the regular TIE/Advanced would allow you to pick up the Huge Raider on top of that, which comes with an TIE-Advanced anyway.Which gives you both imperial huge ships together with a full swarm and the ability to fly all the imperial aces. I guess that would be my call if I would be living in an area without tournaments. $275.58 is not that much over budget and yields you nearly the complete imperial faction, both core sets and those huge ships for epic play. I guess you could remove the new "The force awakens core set" and be within budget, or slightly above if you add the regular TIE/FO expansion instead.

Though I do assume that you have some form of table to play at, else you really should cut the shopping a little down and make room in your budget for a playmate and some sort of table to play at. :)

Also this site is great for building lists and tells you what expansion you need for which cards on the card Brower tab https://geordanr.github.io/xwing/

I think Scum is the most accessible faction now, and is about to get a lot more exciting too, when the scum epic and aces hits.

I'd recommend:

1-2 Starvipers (yeah, I love playing 2!)

3 Kihraxz

2 Jumpmasters

1-2 Most wanted

1 Hwk

Maybe a Bossk :)

TFA if you don't have the kit anymore, or just buy the damage deck if you do

Also, if you do want to epand into a second faction, you'll have some of the most important cards (2-4 autothrusters, 3-4 crackshots).

EVERYTHING!!!

EVERYTHING!!!

And Hobo will sell you his collection for 249.99

Maybe I could jump in here instead of making my own thread.

I have one of each core set and am considering dropping some loot on:

Falcon

Ghost

T-70 expansion

X-wing expansion

This fits in the "ships I like" theory of getting stuff although I kind of hate the color scheme on the T-70 but I can fix that.

Is there a tourney fieldable list in that? With the caveat that I don't expect to win the tourney but also that I don't care to lose without putting up something of a fight. i.e. can I win at least some matches if I learn how to fly it?

Adding additional cores and TIE expansions so as to field a swarm squad and have enough to field fleets for two players is not off the table but I mostly want to get a squad of my own to play on a "Force Friday" or a "Fly Casual" tourney.

Scum is good, they play different and fly great.

For fun,

Mist Hunter Expansion Pack 14.99

Punishing One Expansion Pack 22.49

Kihraxz Fighter Expansion Pack 10.79

Hound's Tooth Expansion Pack 28.49

StarViper Expansion Pack 14.99

M3-A Interceptor Expansion Pack 10.79

IG-2000 Expansion Pack 21.39

Most Wanted Expansion Pack 28.49

X-Wing Miniatures Game - The Force Awakens 28.49

EXTRA DICE 6.39

Total price is 180.91

For a Torney

List one

3 Punishing One (AKA toilet seats for life) (add 44.98 to above)

List Two

3 IG-2000 (add 42.78 to above total)

Someone pointed out the Ello and Wedge cards too me. I've played a few games with cobbled together "Just give me some ships and we'll play so I can see if I like this" fleets. Wedge and Ello "work" for me on a couple of levels.

Is there something that 3 X-wing list just gets "way better" with that doesn't show up in those expansions?

Not at the moment tripple x-wing's is kinda week as soon as you encounter a list designed to dodge arcs instead of jousting, or a list with turrets.

Engine upgrade for batwedge (BB-8, Wedge Antilles, Engine Upgrade), but you have the only source for Engine Upgrade already on your buy list, which is the Millennium Falcon. ;-)

If you add an A-Wing and a YT-2400 you increase potential builds a lot as you get access to Push the Limit and can build the new incredible mobile super Dash with upgrades from the Falcon and Ghost and A-Wing, etc

So your planned shopping list opens up a lot of good options to to buy more, because the synergies between each new expansion and what you already have start to shine. So you starter idea seems to work rather well.

EVERYTHING!!!

TWICE*

*Except the Scyk (M3-A Interceptor). It's pants.

Thanks to all. This especially is a big help especially as I do like the freighters.

The question is too open-ended. Give us some clarity by answering these two questions:

1) What faction do you like the most?

2) How would you describe your playstyle?

1.) I previously tended to move between the three factions, as I liked to use all of my ships. However, I don't currently have any ships, so any faction will do. I suppose I probably played Rebels slightly more than the others, with Scum second, and Imperials third.

2.) My play style tends to vary depending on which faction I am playing. With the Rebels, I tend to play very direct and depend on shields. When using Scum, I would take advantage of all the fun little tricks like Dead Man's Switch and Auto-Corrector. When playing Imperials, I would predominantly play Interceptors.

Gotcha. For Rebels, I'd get the following (with a brief explanation why) at MM:

1 Original X-Wing Core (R2-D2, Biggs, Extras): $29

1 TFA X-Wing Core (Poe, BB-8, extra): $29

1 Ghost (It's good, and so is the Shuttle): $38

1 K-Wing (Miranda has fun shield abilities, TLT): $15

1 E-Wing (Coran with R2 is strong): $15

2 Z-95 (Good filler in a list, plus cheap ordinance carriers): $22

2 Y-Wings (TLT): $22

1 A-Wing (Tycho, Deadeye, PTL): $11

1 Falcon: $22

Then, on eBay, buy R4-D6 (for Biggs): $2

Total: $205

This gives you plenty of variety and room to spend more money to fill out in the direction you want to go.
