I HATE Math...

By Joe Boss Red Seven, in X-Wing

Man I was definitely using the OTHER definition of funk.

Like, "Hey, my two-year old hasn't had a bath for 72 hours and he's been playing in the backyard. Look at that funk between his toes."

I see. I thought you had something against George Clinton.

You should too because it kills FUN... IF You Let It !

:D

As an account that spends many hours auditing line item transactions for work, I agree, Math is great.

Ok. We get it Joe. You don't like competitive play and the things that are aligned with it. This might surprise you, but some people don't take into account thematic elements at all and only look to build the most competitive list possible, using things such as math to create it. And guess what? They enjoy their play experience. Blasphemy, I know, but just try to remember that just because you don't enjoy the competitive nature of the game and would prefer everyone just go "pew pew pew!" with their favorite ships and dance around the table having pretend lightsaber battles between rounds, doesn't mean that's how everyone needs or should enjoy the game.

Good to have you back though.

But going "pew pew pew" is my favorite part. Especially when I pretend my honda is an FO and go "pew pew pew" on the way to the FLGS. In fact, "pew pew pew" is the only consistently good part of the movie series.

Especially the kind that saves you time.

I don't really mind Maths being used to indicate the given value of a ship in a hypothetical situation.

The thing I dislike is that the assumptions one makes to arrive at the given value are often overshadowed by the resulting numbers which can stifle innovation and leads to a self fulfilling prophecy.

Can you image if Aaron Bonner had looked at the Math-Wing on K-Wings and not bothered to innovate the Danger Zone list?

The assumptions that are made when doing the math are, in my opinion more important than the resultant number as you need experience to know how accurate your model is and a good number of people just look at the end results, never questioning how we got there.

Kris

Yeah the assumptions are the important part. Garbage in, garbage out.

K-wing + TLT. Not that great. And that's what the math says as well. Everyone kind of knew that already.

But nobody had really looked into the math for K-wing + TLT + Tactician, including myself, although it was in my queue at the time. (Then I get beat by it in round 3, that'll teach me for waiting...) The math says that there's a huge boost in stress utility, which should be able to make up for the lower raw jousting efficiency. And that's essentially what we see in practice as well.

What ultimately matters is that the mathematical model reflects reality.

Jbr7 doesn't like math because he doesn't like counting how many cool ships he has.

This game IS math, though!

This game is DICE

so if you hate dice then do you hate this game :P

I knew K Wing + TLT + Tactician was awesome when the ship and cards were spoiled. didn't everyone?

math didn't tell me it was good looking at the combo straight away told me AWESOME :D

Hel-sez-you... one of the guys here even called my Scrooge Mc Duck once... I LOVE COUNTING My Beloved Ships!!!

Hst-hst-hst!

We want the funk...

Play that funky music..

If you don't like, what you see here, get the funk out...

I'm a yes vote for math .. made it thru calc 3 back in the day, always better at it than my English classes ..

Hating on math is like hating on Rush ... you can try, but in the end you know it's good stuff...

Yaaa... Nothing to see here.

Math isn't so bad, until you start getting math classes that have more vocabulary than numbers.

Math hates you

only one of you is right

I was chatting with a kid (son of a friend of mine, about 12) at an X-wing tournament about how he was using C3PO with Han Solo. I was saying that the odds of that succeeding were only approximately 3 to 1 and this kid looked me right in the eye and said:

"Never tell me the odds."

I shut up.

It's just that we're jealous. Nothing more. Just like this game is about fun, nothing more. For some people that's math, for most (and me) it's pushing awesome ships around a table making pew pew noises.

I can have fun just setting out little battle scenes with my ships... no playing, just setting up a cool table.
