I HATE Math...

By Joe Boss Red Seven, in X-Wing

You should too because it kills FUN... IF You Let It !

Hey, JBR5 is back.

but... i like math, not math relating to this game, but math math. IT WAS MY ONLY GOOD SUBJECT IN SCHOOL JBR7!!!

I drew pictures of space ships; monsters, gurls and robots in math class.

:D

I used to hate math. Now it's my job and I kind of love it. It grows on you.

I used to hate math. Now it's my job and I kind of love it. It grows on you.

So does funk...

Math is the language we use to describe the universe, and there's no aspect of modern life it doesn't touch. The computer you used to type your post, for instance, is fundamentally a device for adding and multiplying numbers really quickly. And most of the things I have fun doing--watching TV and movies recorded, edited, and transmitted digitally; reading books composed using word-processing software, then printed by computer-controlled presses; playing a dice game with a strong geometric component--involve computers.

Specifically in X-wing, math is an important tool for figuring out the difference between a good list and a bad list. It's more fun to play with good lists, especially if you have regular opponents who play with good lists, and I do. So for me, math makes X-wing more fun, not less.

Mathematics is like steak: reliable, useful, builds a stronger world and is full of protein.

X-Wing is like chocolate: pleasurable, presented in a fun way, sickly in excessive doses, potentially addictive and bad for your financial health.

Anyone want a chocolate coated steak?

Math is very, very useful. I use a math to figure out how many ships I need.

Ships needed = n+1 where n is the number of ships Joe Boss has.

I don't like using math-wing to determine my list design.

I like math. And I heeded your warning about not letting it kill fun. Success! Embrace the Matrix, JBR7 :)

Math is the light in the universe that drives away the shadows of ignorance.

Math brings order to the chaos.

Saying math kills fun is like saying money is the root of all evil.

Both are simply wrong. Money is not the root of all evil, the correct quote is "the love of money is the root of all evil" Money like Math is not the issue, rather the attitude is the problem.

If you find that thinking too hard about the math behind your list makes the game less enjoyable then don't think so much about the math.

But it's immensely naive to think other people won't or shouldn't take advantage of math to figure out what the optional squad is. Especially when you're looking at tournaments.

It is a tool for sure, but I dunno just how important it is particularly for veterans and bright rookies.

:)

I have almost 200 ships and about four years of experience with the game so maybe I use math all the time and don't know I an using it... that is more like skill learned by hands and mind on experience.

In short I use The Force to figure out what is best to bring to the table based on what the story for the weekend is going to attempt to achieve.

:D

Yes, but funk doesn't save taxpayers millions of dollars. :)

That's an assertion that isn't really testable.

is counting to 100 such a hard thing?

It's not like it's Warhammer 40k where you are equipping 10 models per unit and making a 2000 point army.

Meta-math says that The Millennium Falcon, Barron Sinter Fel and similar older ships are not able to be in the game all the time... Hersey!!!

If you're talking about jousting values, then for things like the Falcon or Fel that won't be very accurate because those ships aren't simply jousters.

But even Major Juggler never claims that his jousting values are the end all of X-Wing, but rather are the place to start with. If I know that a given ship doesn't perform well per the jousting numbers. Then I am able to take that information and use it to decide how I can overcome the ships jousting performance.

For Fel or other interceptors that means don't joust. For the Falcon that means use his PWT. For the T-65 that means knowing it isn't a very efficient ship and giving it upgrades to try and counter that.

Math doesn't kill fun, but the wrong application of math can.

A baseball player doesn't consciously use calculus to compute the ideal location for his glove given the initial conditions of a fly ball. But that's okay, because calculus isn't worried about whether you care about it: it's going to keep describing the path of the ball anyway.

Of course it is: you'd use a regression-discontinuity design.

Ok. We get it Joe. You don't like competitive play and the things that are aligned with it. This might surprise you, but some people don't take into account thematic elements at all and only look to build the most competitive list possible, using things such as math to create it. And guess what? They enjoy their play experience. Blasphemy, I know, but just try to remember that just because you don't enjoy the competitive nature of the game and would prefer everyone just go "pew pew pew!" with their favorite ships and dance around the table having pretend lightsaber battles between rounds, doesn't mean that's how everyone needs or should enjoy the game.

Good to have you back though.
