Imperial list - Aces & One Rookie

By Embir82, in X-Wing Squad Lists

What do you think of the following list? Is it viable in tournament setting? What is its weakness and strenght?

If I had Imperial Aces I would probably swap Soontir for Carnor Jax and for saved points bought Push the Limit for The Inquisitor - but as it stands i had to use Juke on him.

Soontir Fel (32)

- Autothrusters

- Push the Limit

The Inquisitor (30)

- Autothrusters

- TIE/v1

- Juke

Omega Leader (26)

- Juke

- Comm Relay

Academy Pilot (12)

It's an interesting concept. How do you plan to deal with the mid ships with larger hulls? The Academy will either be first off the board or largely ignored. i can see TLT heavy builds giving it fits as well as multiple regen builds due to low dice numbers from both TIEs and relying on essentially one blocker to try to help setup.

The list you described - with Carnor and PtL on Inquisitor - was just used by a certain Paul Heaver to come in 3rd in Swiss, top 4 overall (lost in semifinal to eventual winner) in the regional tournament in Roanoke. If you learn to fly as well as he does, it's a great list. If I flew it, you'd probably keep looking for something better.

I believe @pheaver is on record saying that he chose this list to avoid the frustrating Palp aces mirror match. I also believe his typical strategy vs other aces was to force an endgame simplification down to two of his three aces vs one of his opponents. At that point, he either wins on points or wins outright.

Compared to aces lists with shuttle + Palpatine, it's greater variance and slightly riskier as Palp's godmode ability isn't there to save you. If you can arc-dodge effectively with your aces and block effectively with your alpha squadron pilot, you'll do well.

As far as strategies go, I'd suggest taking large rocks or debris fields, block up the center really well when facing swarms or alpha strike lists, beware of range 1 auto-damage abilities (autoblaster turrets, feedback arrays, etc) and - although you probably won't see them as much in the wave 8 meta - beware of stresshogs or other stress mechanics (e.g. tactician). Or, basically similar advice to what you'd get if you flew Palp aces, just without the Palp safety net.
