Cataclysm Isn't the Final Expansion Right?

By Joker2016, in Talisman

Has anyone read this anywhere, Nomad Games posted on their web site that cataclysm the final expansion for talisman has been released. Did they mean "latest expansion" or has anyone heard that this is the "final expansion"?

They don't know squat. I'm sure they meant latest.

I would not say "they know squat" prob just a mistake. I might chase it up though.

I hope we get new corners that lean thematically towards the post-apocalyptic setting but are also compatible with the old board.

Just read a post from Samuel Baily. He's no longer with FFG and will not be designing more expansions :(

Asked if he knows what the future hold for the Talisman, he said he doesn't know so we'll have to wait and see.

Its early days at mo, and Talisman has gone through other designers before. The sky is not falling yet :) .

Apart form that they need to find a new designer it is the first time they add to the rule-book: "Special thanks to all the fans, testers, and players troughout the years that have made Talisman so great!" I am afraid this could be the last expansion...

Well if it is BRING ON THE HOMEBREWS :) . Or it could mean they might redo them all again...

Come on Jon whats it called?

I am OK if the connecting expansion for highlands and woodlands is the last for Talisman 4th edition revised. We have more than enough playbility and a lot of homebrews of you are so inclined. I think the cataclysm board will become most peoples go-to board to use since it fixes some problems with the old board.

I think there will be a 5th edition somewhere down the line that will fix some of the major issues and make it a better system overall, but this edition will have decades of replayability and notoriety.

I don't think a fifth edition will be happening any time soon. The main reason is that the fifth edition will conflict with the Digital Edition . The digital version is the main way to attract new people to the Revised Fourth Edition board game, so there should not be a conflicting new edition.

Talisman is one of those games where a new edition is released after a long span of time (e.g. 12 years between third and fourth editions) with a more-or-less similar ruleset to attract a new generation of gamers who would, by nature, be attracted to such a ruleset. Some games are re-issued with drastically revised rules to attract a wider audience, but this would not be Talisman . This, in addition to the Digital Edition conflict above, also suggests a fifth edition will not be released for many, many years.

As for continuing the Revised Fourth edition, as long as it's profitable, there is no reason why it should not continue. Well, actually there is one reason: to give the Digital Edition a chance to catch up. I just question how profitable the game really is. The game has been out for over 10 years, and only if the core set from 2007 is still profitable will the expansions be profitable. My guess is that this is the end, or near the end, of Revised Fourth, unfortunately. (But it's still infinitely replayable!)

Eeek. This all does sound ominous, especially, " Special thanks to all the fans, testers, and players troughout the years that have made Talisman so great!"

I wouldn't miss the new expansions so much as I would miss this community. I'm not sure how many people would keep posting on these forums with no new boards to look forward to.

Samuel bailey also said in that post he had ideas formulated for future expansions, when asked about giving them for home brews, he said all his ideas were given to FF. So who knows what the future holds for Talisman 4th edition. I hope it's not the end, maybe even a big box of cards for all the previous expansions with new characters, I would be happy with this ;)

Even if there will be no more expansions, do you think we will be getting more PoD expansions? Maybe that's the way to go.

I hope DE gave it an ongoing bump, as long as they feel it makes as much money as using their resources elsewhere it'll keep going. So let's hope!

Possible PoD expansions:

Travelling down the River? Just a deck of cards with rivery encounters. Possibly some new water craft, things like that.

Hidden Rooms in the Castle? Of course it would be hard if that space gets terrained!

Secret Chambers in a) Chapel b) Temple c) Ruins

*** side note or question: Can the Tinkerer transform a Raft to be one of his Followers? If so, sail away, or just hit each other space along the river?

From what I can gather, 4e is pretty much 2e with more expansions. I can see 5e really thinking outside the box and adding all types of new features, terrains, perhaps 4-tiers/layers of difficulty (outer, middle, inner) instead of 3 since the 4e board is 2x larger than the 2e board allowing for more spaces, and as the poster above me said (expanded), a secret passages deck, etc. I'd also like to see more dynamics on the character sheet that allow for dexterity for thieving and missile based attacks, locked/blocked doors requiring strength to open rules for playing in teams and sharing items, rules for trading goods, etc., etc. The game is already long, but this could make it almost rpg'ish, and very exciting without extending the length of the game... or could potentially extend it for days if you like! 5e is the future and it's wide open imo!

That would be pretty awesome but it would still be discarded whether you use it or not, everything the item does still happens, such as if you animate the amulet it still does it's anti-magic magic. You can give a raft life but you can't make it walk with you or stop it from rotting.

I couldn't resist asking mister Bailey if he was working on a fift expansion. I was surprised by his answer. For me his 4 expansions got the game better. Curious to see his next work.

I wouldn't be disapointed too much if its the ends of the 4th edition except maybe for some PoD's haha. We always want more...

I think with about 60(forgot the exact number) characters its enough, enough painting also haha.

I knew this would be said. Maybe a future expansion will have the opposite of Fire oil? Varnish! Yep, I want that added to the Purchase deck, now.

I am curious: I haven't bought the new expansion because it doesn't look like something I'd enjoy -- but if you say it 'fixes problems' with the old board, what do you mean?

Since the city and other corners came out when is the last time you visited the Tavern? The Village? The corner pieces which should be standard cornerstones of the game have been lost. The new Denien cards really make the corners viable again. Also, the inner region is now a little more interesting in my opinion. It added some nice cards to the mix as well. Overall I think this IS the Talisman main board we need IF using all the different expansions.

The original board was designed and made off of old ideas and all the corner expansions really did not account for the main board, they trumped it. Now we have a main board that complements the corner and small expansions perfectly.

I think one supporting factor that this is the last expansion is the characters are now pretty evened out.....

20 Good

20 Evil

29 Neutral

The game is pretty much done imo.

We have all four corners plus the Dragons, as well as more characters and adventure cards than we could ever need. Meanwhile we have small expansion mechanics that almost get lost in the vastness (aka, Firelands tokens).

I can only think of two more expansions really worth making:

- Timescape. Not everybody's favourite, but still a classic (and could be done much better).

- A big box expansion which links themes from various expansion (eg, quest cards that require you to travel to corner boards).

Don't get me wrong - I'll continue to buy and enjoy every expansion they print. But I no longer feel the game really needs to be expanded.

What I don't want to see are a lot of expansions that replace parts of the game rather than adding to it. Cataclysm and The Dragon inner regions are fun, but in order to use them we need to leave part of the base game out. These tend to diverge the game rather than expand it.
