What's Sinking U-boats?

By Baaa, in X-Wing

Any ideas out there?

I tried 8 x Z-95's the other day. Best I managed was taking two out for the loss of four Z's before we both got that bored we almost watched Episode One on Sky Star Wars.

Luckily enough Emerdale came on the TV and my wife took control of the remote.

Anyone having better luck?

Naked Zs are kind of boring to fly. Just point and shoot. Block and move.

5 A-Wings can do it as well, as show by the Rochester and New Mexico regionals. I feel like A-Wings are a lot more fun to fly than Zs, but it is still a swarm.

Well, if you want to go with Zs, Blount w/Tracers and Talas with your munition of choice may work better.

Imperial Ace lists can do it by positioning and great defense ability.

PS4 Crack swarms can do it, by pushing a lot of damage through early.

I've not run it myself, but I think Palp Aces w/ Soontir and Carnor is probably a pretty strong matchup against the U-Boats. Two arc dodgers w/ ATs and Carnor's general nonsense.

Carnor is Public Enemy Number One, followed closely by Palp in this list, and it definitely can't slouch on flying carefully, but it could do a lot of hurt.

I quite fancy 5 x A-Wings and you're right, they're a lot more fun to fly.

That list is actually sneaky expensive to build though

Can we jst get a minute for Carnor Jax? Alway that other guy, kept in the shade of the Baron, but no longer!

The guy is purpose built to mess with jumpmasters in all their varieties.

I'm having a lot of fun running him hulled with 3 AT sienar prockets. A list that no one wants to get close and personal with...

i find feedback array is a nice counter for carnor and pal-aces/imp-aces in general. they can still arc dodge but they have to waste time going wide to avoid getting feedbacked.

I kept a u-boats list from firing until very late in the game at the Atlanta regional Saturday with talas, Blount and a grey squad y-wing with plasma torpedoes. Removed one from the table before anything happened, stripped shields from the second and when he did get the torp off?

2 damage.

U-boats just aren't that great.

Depth charges work well, but I've heard that radar equipped aircrafts do wonders in that regard.

Something involving Wes Jansen seems like a good place to start.

Rebel Convoys.

I have defeated them with the 5 A-Wing build. It is a lot of fun to fly and is very good at making the U-boat player actually fly. Was never 1 shot killed by torps either.

7 Talas w/ Tracers and Guidance Chips

Also, though a swarm of Zs may not be fun for you, they are fun to fly for others. And no, they simply are not point and shoot. Sure, that's kinda all they can do, but you've got to plan ahead and set up blocks, and know how to fly back out of those block positions to get back in the fight and shoot stuff down. And boy are aces a pain to deal with.

37 Esege Tuketu, Proton Torpedoes, Extra Munitions, Recon Specialist, Guidance Chips

28 Dutch Vander, Plasma Torpedoes, Extra Munitions, Guidance Chips

34 Wes Janson, Push the Limit, BB-8, Integrated Astromech

99 Total

Esege and Dutch can feed each other TLs and Focus tokens meaning every volley you fire should be pretty deadly. They can't quite kill a Jumpmaster in a single volley but they can come pretty close, with luck you may get a useful crit or two on one while Wes shuts down another.

Dutch w/ proton torps, EM, R5-K6, chips, Dorsal turret and BTL-A4

2x Red Squadron T-65s w/ R5 and Ablative Trashcan (IA)

Tala w/ chips and concussions

Used this list. Can alpha strike a U-Boat in 1 turn from R3, or R1 when torps and concs are gone. Good flying will get you the rest. Dutch throws out TL support at range and hits pretty hard at R1 with dorsal turret and title. U-Boats are vulnerable to being out PS'd and dont have a hell of a lot of hull and shields. Its also hard for them to control range due to large bases making them overly fast.

The classic TIE Swarm and its new sibling the CrackBlack swarm seem to handle it pretty well.

I haven't played against a U-boat list yet. What does it usually entail?

That means 12 hits for the first 2 rounds of shooting which is usually enough to burn through the defenses of anyone not called Soontir Fel. Once their torpedoes have gone, their 360-degreee turrets mean they can just nibble any survivors to death while relying on their decent hulls and 2 agility to protect them from the depleted return fire.

They are not unbeatable but they are certainly a strong build due to the alpha-strike they are capable of delivering. Many players now consider them to be one of the competitive list archetypes that need to be taken into account when designing a list for competitive play.

Definitely a good option. Try the Following.
