"Pray I don't alter it any further." Upgrade Card

By Boba Rick, in X-Wing

So everyone has built a squad that landed at 103 points.

Or maybe 102 points.

101 points?

Arrrgggghhhhhhh

So, how about an upgrade card that severely hampers one ship but gives you a few more points? Not a Chardaan Refit, but a card that is unique (so it doesn't get out of control) and can go on anything. It can be simple, but really helpful in certain situations.

"Reduce this ship's attack value by 1 and point cost by 3."

I wish. That would be awesome (auto include) on a HWK. Its primary is useless anyway.

Great point. All of a sudden the HWK is off the bench and gets more playing time.

So, I ask myself, where would this go? If we say for a second it doesn't even take a mod slot, then what are we looking at?

9 Point TIE or Z-95, but 1 attack die... Pretty sure any list would be better with 9 points of upgrades instead of a blocker (because that's all he'll be at 1 attack, just ask a HWK).

But that actually brings up an interesting point... You could totally break secondary based ships with this. It'd be an auto include on outriders and HWKs and almost auto-include on Y wings. It would help out Heavy Sycks though...

As for 3 attack ships, you're now getting a 2 attack Interceptor for 15 points, or a 2 attack X wing for 18... Pretty sure that I'd rather take a /FO or a Z95 w/ Hull instead.

It would be better to say reduce attack dice rolled by one. But then you're back to no one would bother using it.

Edit: Ninja'd

Torkil Mux likes.

1pt net cost Mangler Cannons for everybody who can take them... seems a little unbalanced. This only works if you lose all cannon and turret slots.

Palpmobile.

Is it really broken though if it's unique? It can't get out of control if it's only on one ship.

It really helps ships that are reliant on secondary weapons (Syck, HWK, etc).

12 point A-wing seems okay.

so does a 23 point stresshog.

41 point HLC Eval+Dengar crew

No it isn't. I've killed a Soontir with Palob's range 1 primary :D

So, a free accuracy corrector?

A TIE Advanced wouldn't care, it'll get a 3 point reduction and AC his single shot back to two hit results anyway.

A Knave would like it.

So would IG-B

Make it -5 points and we have a deal.

I could run 3 Lothal rebels ;)

I've been thinking along the same lines.

I like this one better

-1 point cost

This ship cannot perform the focus action or be assigned focus tokens.

- Enables 5 lambdas, because fun. Would probably be good on stuff with low agility that might as well take taret locks, like b-wings. Can't really see anything broken about it but it opens up some new interesting squads.

Edit: don't know what to call it, something that makes you unable to focus. Rebecca Black Soundtrack maybe?

Unique.... unique.... unique.....

strangely, I actually think the HWK's a lot better off than a few ships (silly little X...)

Mux, Palob and Jan have seen quite a bit of play around here. Mux has obvious utility, someone's run Palob with two torp boats to rather devastating effect against both aces and enemy mirror matches, and Jan just demolishes enemies with Wedge

Civilian Refit

Because like, they always get either reduced or no weapons in Star Wars. Would certainly see use on HWKs, and would definitely be interesting on something like a scyk.

IG-88B w/ Mangler, AT, FCS becomes 41pts, and never notices that you took away his primary. Assuming this is a title, this wouldn't be great in brobots but I can think of few support ships scarier.

If it's a modification, it's the purview of HWKs, the odd Scyk, cut-price Outriders, certain Y-wings (Hello, free dorsal turrets) and Palpmobiles that want to live rather than fight. Possibly 15pt Howlrunners, too, as a deliberate disincentive to get shot at.

Seems a really dangerous card to have available, really. A bit like a modification that granted an EPT: would have once been fine, but now would be broken.

Any ship running a secondary weapon would automatically take that.

For a generic points refund upgrade card, I think something like this would be more usable:

No Time for Repairs

"Reduce this ship's point cost by 5.

After deployment, assign 3 face up damage cards to this ship."

I've been thinking along the same lines.

Or perhaps "Ritalin Shortage"

Put a restriction on it saying:

May not use a Cannon or a Turret weapon if you have this card equipped.

I dont consider Ordnance to be capable of abusing this card. Why? Because theyre limited. Two proton torps and 2 cluster missiles, assuming i didnt wiff anything thats pretty painful but even with guidance chips i still wiff them alot. Once theyre gone, the ship becomes kinda pointless.

As many have pointed out, the abusers would be cannon/turret people. 1pt mangler cannons...fu lol

Palpmobile.

ooh ooh TIE Shuttle :P

Although I am not a fan of more chardann refits and even though the primary is going down having this as a modification slot could see some serious draw backs. (Can You imagine a 5 TLT- Y-wing list?).

As an EPT slot? Maybe but again all the unique pilots without EPT slots need some love. Restrict it to a faction? I don't think Imperials need that much help. Besides they already got some on the way.

Also the title of the upgrade. You are going to have to reduce it from a full sentence to no more than a 1-3 word phrase. Altered Deal maybe.

But "this deal keeps getting worse all the time" would mean that every turn the card would have to be progressively detrimental. Starting out great, but each turn changing for the worse until you have to get the hell out of Cloud City.

I love the idea and had one similar a while back, but Ywings like the stresshog would benefit too much as well as say, Dash Rendar.

What I could see is a Scum only unique:

"From the Scrap Heap"
Illicit
- 3 pts

You must start the game with the "Console Fire" damage card on equipped ship. Remove it from ship after it's successfully turned face down.

So yea, your ship costed less but you're messing with it most of the first half of the game praying for it to not crap out on you.
