Shu Yen's Lightsabre

By brandothecommando, in Imperial Assault Campaign

So, has anyone tried modifying Diala's Reward weapon? I've seen it in action for one campaign and found it okay, but it certainly was not anymore powerful than any tier 2 weapon. Considering its an award, it could certainly be better.

My thoughts are simply to change it from blue/red to green/red. This increases the damage as well as surge likely hood while still giving accuracy for her throwing attack (which is clearly why the lightsabre has a blue die to begin with). This would put the weapon in line with something like the BD-1 Vibroaxe; not overpowering, but certainly a good "reward" for completing the mission.

Any thoughts on this?

If you consider Shu Yen's Lightsaber in a vacuum, then yes, it will seem underwhelming. However, if you consider the user of the weapon, and her abilities (specifically Force Adept and Dancing Weapon), and certain modifications (specifically Balanced Hilt), then the weapon is quite formidable.

Force adept is blanket across the board for any character, so that's not really a deciding factor.

Balanced hilt I will agree makes the lightsabre much better, but that's again true for any weapon (the BD-1 vibroaxe for example is much better with the balanced hilt, just like the lightsabre).

Dancing weapon would be better with a green die than a blue die, since blue/green combo is generally more than enough range during the campaign and, for a 2 strain cost, adding a blue die to a close combat attack to get some range is not much different than biv's close and personal (opposite in theory, but similar effect) and this is a 4xp ability.

I'm not saying that the lightsabre is total junk, I'm simply saying that for a hero specific reward, it's "weaker" than most tier 2 weapons, which seems counterproductive to me...plus, it's a lightsabre! Shouldn't it be way more Bad Ass!

The best feature is that you don't need to spend the credits you get from the side mission to buy it.

I think the lightsaber would have been great if it was red/yellow and two modification slots. Then it would have been great early on and leveled better on through out the game. As is, I think the Force Pike is the better weapon.

True, didn't really consider that.

I still think it should be red/green!

Uh, it has 2 amazing if not the best surges in the game on it AND boosts her foresight power. You seriously need this to be better?

Now it might suffer a bit when Bespin comes out with all it's white defense dice, but right now it's an extremely solid weapon. If you could more reliably generate surges on every attack with it it would be so ridiculously OP it wouldn't be funny. You could be force throwing a target into position and then way of the sarlac and killing 3+ targets every round and getting your strain back with no problems.

Use it with Battle Meditation.

I played in a campaign with her where she also earned the Adrenal Implant reward. She could use Battle Meditation for an ally and Focus herself also. I did not ever win the LS (did not come up), but Dancing Weapon would have been pretty effective with Red, Green, Blue, Blue.

It's weaker than one tier 2 weapon (which is arguably stronger than the tier 3 melee weapon).

The reason it's not stronger is that you can get it very early in the campaign. Diala attacking with RG or RY with those surges (and not to forget the foresight boost) in story mission 1 would be insane.

Most hero rewards aren't any better than any tier 2 item, because they don't cost any credits, and you still earn credits from their mission.

As an additional mission reward, I would value the lightsaber at around 400 credits, the amount the rebels would usually get in place of their mission reward, so I don't see why it should be better or equal to the 600 credit bd1. I think people just get hung up on the lightsaber stigma.
