speed

By ra9, in WFRP Rules Questions

Hi there,

I am curious about speed. I've noticed there is no such a characteristic (contrary to first and second edition). So is there any difference in speed? Or do everyone cover the same distance in the same time? No matter race or encumbrance? How is it solved?

Speed and placement are more abstract, there are no squares or rulers, so an elf versus a human the difference of 1 speed no longer really matters. You measure where you are based on how far you are from things (or engaged with) abstractly using the stand ups and tokens. Moving from one range increment to another (IE close to engaged) just requires a single maneuver (you get one free maneuver per turn, extra ones cause fatigue).

Hope that helps.

Distances are now abstract in nature and movement is covered by performing one or more manuvers to move from say long "range" to medium range.

It costs the same number of manuvers to cover that distance regardless of race, and I think encumbrance too (although there are still encumbrance rules, i just haven't read them yet!)

I guess their might be rules for giants covering a longer distance with fewer manuvers perhaps, compared to smaller races (and horses when they appear) but again I haven't read them yet.

The idea of dwarves being a little bit slower though and Elves a bit quicker is gone though; elves now get reduction in terrain penalties for woodland etc, implying they are lithe and nimble when in their natural surroundings without making them any quicker at the 100 metre dash...

Many thanks for enlightening gran_risa.gif

I liked the idea of different speeds even though it never really mettered in my games. Now, when it seems the rules would allow to make better tactical use of it, it is gone. Still interesting, as pumpkin pointed out, how will e.g. horse movement be managed. With some additional manuvers?
