Rebel Palp(Kyle)-Aces

By CRCL, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I was wondering if anyone has run a list to take advantage of Kyle Katarn's focus pass ability and aces like Poe and Jake. Something like this:

37 Poe w/ VI, R5P9, AT.

33 Jake w/ PtL, PRockets, AT, Test, VI.

30 Kyle w/ Adapt, TLT, Chopper, MC.

0 Initiative.

3x Big Debris.

PS10 Poe is a tried-and-true build, and with R5P9 and Kyle's Focus pass he can do nifty stuff like Tallon Roll and still have his modifier/regen active.

Jake at PS9 with no initiative bid is usually asking to be out bid by Soontir, but you can use Kyle's focus pass and PtL to reposition in the Combat phase with Jake if he's got no arc or has been blocked.

Kyle's mostly a support ship that should be skirting R3 for most of the game, trying to hide behind rocks. Preferably you'd stall the initial engagement to try and get 3-5 focus on him before the fight starts. Adaptability and chopper are there because they're free and means he can always get his focus to pass on to Poe or Jake.

I haven't had a chance to fly this list yet, but what do people think? Anyone flown anything similar?

I flew a similar list with Kyle (Jan Ors crew), Poe and Red Ace. Kyle fed Focus tokens to Poe while Jan allowed Red Ace to charge up her Comms Relay.

35 Poe Dameron, R5-P9, VI, IA

36 Red Ace, R2-D2, IA, Comms Relay

29 Kyle Katarn, Jan Ors, TLT

It is a pretty lean list but worked really well. I came 3rd out of 16 in a local tournament and I would have won if the 3rd game had gone on another round or two.

The ability to feed Poe focus tokens is great as it frees him up to use his other actions or pull red maneuvers if needed. I pulled a T-Roll in my second game that dropped Whisper perfectly into my sights. :D

Jan Ors also brings a lot as she can keep Red Ace's Comms Relay charged at all times which boost her already impressive resilience. Also there are times when it is handy for Poe to have an Evade token if your opponent has outguessed your move. The TLT gives the HWK a bit of aggressive punch which ensures the enemy ignores it at his peril.

Oow, that's an interesting one. Double regeneraters looks pretty nasty to face, especially considering how tough Red Ace is. I definately considered Jan Ors, but figured with Jake the MC title would be more useful, but now I'm reconsidering it.

Did you find yourself missing autothrusters at all, or was IA good enough? Also did you have any matchups against the triple U-boat list, or was this before wave 8 dropped?

This was just before the U-boats dropped so triple U-boats could be a problem.

I only lost Red Ace once and that was because I got my dial inverted and flew her off the table. Based on that, I am confident that she can survive without auto-thrusters.

I did lose Poe twice out of 4 games as he is not quite as tough. Autothrusters might have kept him around a bit longer (although in general it was bumping and losing actions that was critical). It is a fine line as getting these 3 ships into 100 points is effective but means I didn't quite have the points for all the upgrades I wanted. Against U-boats, Autothrusters would definitely be a big benefit.

Having said that, the list did very well. If you wanted auto-thrusters on both T70s, you could drop the TLT down to a Dorsal Turret and drop VI to Adaptability on Poe. That would reduce the offensive power of the HWK a bit but that in turn might mean it attracts less attention. It is certainly worth experimenting with a bit. The list is strong but I am pretty sure it could be refined and triple U-boats is definitely something that will need to be taken into consideration in the future.

Ran a similar squad the other day.

Poe Dameron

PtL

BB-8

AT

WG

Kyle Katarn

Wired

ICT

Jan Ors

EU

Moldy Crow

2x bandit squadron pilot.

Things I would likely change: twin laser turret if possible on Kyle. Potentially replace the bandits with super Jake.

It was the first time I ran PtL + BB-8 on Poe. The maneuvers were amazing. I believe I stayed out of arc all except for 2 rounds of combat. I'd have Poe take focus as one of his actions if there was a chance he would be hit and then when combat starts Kyle would pass him a focus and use Jan to turn it into an evade. The action economy was crazy good. Ion Turret on Kyle was pretty sweet. If it hit, small based ships would suffer a Poe attack the next round. Made Kyle expensive with those upgrades but EU helped him escape arcs when needed and Moldy Crow + Jan Ors kept him with a lot of tokens.

I had thought about running a list with Kyle as pilot. The hard part for me is comparing the dial of the hawk (it's a brick) to that of your aces (paper airplanes that tend to just zoom off when the breeze picks up) Slow roll the aces? Making them more predictable to stay in range of the hwk? Or speed away, taking advantage of your boosts to get into better firing positions or getting out of kill boxes, leaving the hwk behind to fend for itself? Best use of a hwk for me on a rebel squad is Jan Ors with Dash. Jan has Kanon crew, opening up either Dash's dial or her own, allowing them to stay in range of each other.

I ran a list similar to this, but with Red Ace instead of Poe (switched for more offense), I'm 6-2 with it, one loss was going to time with me leading, and I decided to fight instead of run, and lost a ship on the last round of firing to Soontir Fel, the other was a 4 crit natural roll when I had 1 shield and 3 hull on Red Ace, my dice failed.

T-70 X-Wing: •Poe Dameron (37)

Autothrusters (2)

Adaptability +1 (0)

•R2-D2 (4)

HWK-290: •Kyle Katarn (34)

•Moldy Crow (3)

Veteran Instincts (1)

Twin Laser Turret (6)

Recon Specialist (3)

X-Wing: •Garven Dreis (29)

Integrated Astromech (0)

•R5-P9 (3)

Total: 100/100

The passing with Kyle and Garven was great, you can get at least 6 focus tokens saved on the Crow before the first pass. Obviously you can switch Vet Instincts and Adaptability,
