Kanan + 2 Recon Specialists??

By lkb57, in X-Wing

So, I'm sure has been addressed somewhere, but I couldn't find it.

Question 1: Since Recon Specialist is non-unique, can I run 2 of them with Kanan?

Question 2: Can Kanan trigger his ability more than once per round? (in other words, if I had 4 focus tokens, could I spend all four of them to reduce my opponent's attack dice by 4?)

1. Yes.

2. His pilot ability triggers "When an enemy ship at Range 1-2 is attacking," so you can use it against multiple attacks each round if you have enough focus tokens to pay for it. As to whether you can spend multiple tokens against a single attack, I'm not 100% sure, but I suspect not?

Recon Specialist adds one Focus to your Focus action. So having two Recon Specialists would net you only three Focuses.

Pretty sure you can only do a "when" ability once per trigger. You can remove 1 die from many different attacks. But you can't spend 3 focuses to reduce one attack by 3 dice.

Yup, this is correct. The text specifies 1 Focus to negate one attack dice rather than X to negate X. However, you can use it against as many attacks as you have focus tokens.

2 Rec Specs suffer from diminishing returns though. I would rather take Rec Spec, Experimental Interface and Lando (crew) if you want to maximise on token generation. Lando can give you a mix of Focus and Evade tokens which are even better.

For clarity and emphasis, I'll repeat what others have said.

1) Each Recon Specialist gives you one additional focus token when you use the focus action. You can run as many Recon Specialists as you have crew slots; Kanan can take two, so that he receives 3 focus tokens every time he uses the focus action.

2) There's a general rule in X-wing that you can only use an ability once per opportunity (technically, you can only trigger a game effect once during the timing window specified by the effect). So Kanan's ability applies just once every time an enemy ship at Range 1-2 makes an attack, but there's no limit to the number of times he can use it per round.

Been thinking about a Kanan, Garven, Kyle list for fun with RecSpec on Kyle and Tactical Jammer on Kanan

Esege Tuketu is another pilot with potential synergy and a crew slot for another rec spec.

no esege works only when attacking, so no Kanan

Zuckus is a good example of X for X effect for a crew card.

"When attacking, you may receive any number of stress tokens to choose an equal number of defense dice. The defender MUST reroll those dice"

Is it worth it? Surely there's a more beneficial combo of crew.

Much prefer EI/Lando plus Rec Spec

And it's good to have specific examples of general rules as we dive deeper into the system. :)

And now we add Biggs into the mix with all sorts of defensive upgrades, and now we have reached another level of shenanigans.

Sure it does. If Kanan's attack(s) happen to come up with several eyeballs, it gives you another source of focus tokens without spending your own defensive ones.

I prefer Kyle as my second crew. Alongside adv. sensors, it opens up the dial and actively reward you for using the Ghost's best (red) moves, and means your whole plan doesn't fall to pieces the moment your opponent hits you with some stress.

It only good if your meta is crack swarm.
