Kanan Pilot Ability: Per Attack or Per Round?

By Ailowynn, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Kanan's pilot ability reads:

"When an enemy ship at Range 1-2 is attacking, you may spend a focus token. If you do, the attacker rolls 1 fewer attack die."

How does this interact with multiple attacks -- ie Corran Horn, TLT, Ghosts, and BTL-A4? "When an enemy ship is attacking" is clearly the trigger -- but does this occur only once per round, or once per attack? If I line up my stresshog for a shot (primaries and both TLT shots), will Kanan have to spend one focus (which then applies to all attacks), two focus (one for each "declare target" step), or three focus (one for each attack)? And would the same ruling apply for Corran Horn or a VCX with the title?

Thanks in advance.

You may trigger it once per opportunity. The opportunity is "When an enemy ship at Rang 1-2 is attacking". Kanan would need to spend three focus tokens to reduce each of a TLT+BTL-A4 Y-Win's attacks by one die.

Thanks. That was my intuition as well, but I wanted to confirm it.

With the new faq, does Kanan now only have to spend one focus to buff a tlt attack?

Each attack is still a separate attack and Kanan's ability would require spending a focus token during Step 2.ii for each attack. In order to affect a TLT attack, he would need a focus token for each of the TLT attacks. One token isn't going to cover both attacks.

Yup I'm pretty sure this is how it works, because Miranda can only alter one of her two shots.

That's only the case because Miranda's ability IS once per round though. Kanan should be able to trigger on both attacks, assuming he has the tokens, as he's not limited to once per round and it's not an 'after defending/attacking' type ability.

He CAN activate on both attacks, for the cost of two tokens.

I was mainly asking because of how fcs works with cluster missiles and tlt now .. thanks guys

Yeah, the difference is where they trigger. FCS's trigger spot only happens once for TLT, but Kanan's still happens twice.

FCS is an After Attacking trigger, which per the timing chart, only happens after BOTH attacks have concluded. Kanan's is not.

PSA: Friends don't allow friends to say that TLT/Cluster Missiles is a single attack.
