I trust Kathleen Kennedy. She seems to have a good handle on where to take the brand. And she is one of the few I trust to be able to stand up to Iger if need be.
Six new Star Wars movies thru 2020
Catching Han Solo when no one else could
Technically all he did was follow the MF and then report back. Darth Vader and the threatened might of the Imperial Navy did all the work actually catching them while Boba Fett stood by and waited to collect his reward.
Here's a thought; will Rogue One, Han Solo, and Boba Fett movies open with the text crawl? The big Star Wars fanfare? Or will that be reserved for only the 'main series' movies? Will something else take its place?
Was sort of wondering that, myself.
I mean, sure, all the video games did...well, all the good ones, but...honestly, that was more to 'fit in' like it was 'all just the same thing only in a different format!' which is really no longer necessary. Anything coming out, now, in any format, IS totally and completely canon. Period, by de facto. It doesn't have to sell itself as "no, seriously, this is actually Star Wars, for real!"
Consider the other canon series 'Clone Wars' and 'Rebels' - *neither* starts with an opening crawl.
I dunno...I think I'd actually prefer it if 'Rogue One' didn't, and they stuck with it for VIII and IX, only.
Disney is going to milk the franchise for every dollar they can, no question.
But they aren't known for putting out bad movies. I'm cautiously optimistic.
They are known for putting out good kids / family movies. You will not get anything gritty.
And yet they seem to be doing well with their Marvel franchise. They aren't exactly broody gothic flicks but there has been a bit of depth and grit added in to bring characters in line with how normal people process extraordinary events. I wouldn't discount the Mouse growing up a bit just yet.
The Mouse is also behind Desperate Houswives, Grey's Anatomy, War Horse, Pearl Harbour etc. etc.
The first anthology movie that I heard about, even before the first TFA teaser trailer, was a Boba Fett side story. Now that won't be released till at least 2020. Go figure.
And Boba is considered bad ass because he was released as a toy in between ANH and Empire, and premiered on the small screen in the only decent part of the Holiday Special. We all anticipated big things from him, and when Empire hit he was awesome! Sure, he mostly just posed for the camera and looked cool, but we now had his ship, Slave One, as a cool toy. After the movie we went home and zoomed Fett around with his ship and imagined all the cool bounty huntering he could do. It was what he did, but what he could have done.
And then he got knocked into a giant sand-******. The end.
Basically he was a colorful costume and a bad guy that wasn't Vader, a Stormtrooper or some old guy or weird alien. He was cool and mysterious and that was enough to be the Fan Boy Favourite. Congrats Boba, you are now as popular as Wedge!
Edited by GrimmyVI don't think there should be a Boba Fett movie. He shouldn't have too many lines, so I say put him in for a big chunk of the Han Solo movie. They clearly have history, so that makes the most sense. Plus, that leaves 2020 open for a Jar Jar origins story.
Hey, they gotta Try Everything.
Do or do not, there is no try.
I've said this before and I'll stick to my guns.
One of the things that made the OT great was all of the references to the uiiverse that were never on screen. The Battle of Tanaab, the bounty hunter in Ord Mandell, the development of Han and Chewie's relationship, Han and Lando's history, the spice mines on Kessel, why Darth says "No disintegrations" to Boba Fett, etc.
When we are fed a piece of the larger universe we fill those gaps ourselves. We create our own story to explain it and that story is of interest to us - the same reasons why horror films are scarier when we can't see the villian, monster, alien, etc. We are emotionally invested in the universe because a)we subconsciously created a small part of it, b) that part is exactly what we like and find interesting, terrifying, funny, etc. I don't think the Prequel Trilogy gave us the opportunity to emotionally invest in the Eps I, II and III.
Therefore, I personallly hope they do NOT do a Han and/or Boba Fett movie as the characters are much more interesting off-screen. Boba is a chump in the OT. He does absolutely nothing bad ass (he gets defeated by a blind guy with a pointy stick who doesn't even really know he's there) but we know he's a bad ass. Why/How is he a badass .. leave that story to the Audience.
Additionally, the SW universe is very, very large place. Let's open up and explore some more stories and characters instead of focusing on existing ones.
Spot on. And this is precisely why the prequels were garbage. We don't need all those holes filled. And it's partly why I don't care for EU Starwars.
That said, Rogue 1 does look cool. So I'm hopeful.

Not really. The prequels were all about filing in all the holes and mystery from the OT. (very clumsily and without any bearing on internal story versimillitude).
Not really. The prequels were simply adding a new layer, done quite well.

Did you type that with a straight face?
Catching Han Solo when no one else could, talking back to Darth Vader, not being tricked and holding his own in a gunfight with Luke Skywalker on Bespin, temporarily catching Jedi Luke in his rope-gun-thingy.... Boba Fett wasn't a chump, accidents just happen to the best of them.
I do agree that the mystery of the OT was great. That's another thing I like about TFA, we're left wondering quite a bit - much is unanswered.
All we have (outside of EU) is that he has a cool suit of armour and his dad was bad ass (took on a trained Jedi and walked away). But outside of this .. I argue that he's actually very incompetent.
What did we see in the OT?
1. Darth Vader pulls him aside and says "No disintergrations" AFTER saying "I want them alive". I used to work in management and when you have to specifically spell out conditions after making a black and white point .. it means you're dealing with incompetence.
2. Can he fight well? Don't know. He follows Han to Bespin .. and then tells Darth. Who does all the hard work? Does Boba Fett capture Han? Nope .. Darth does. What exactly does Boba do? The same thing Bobby Farret did in elementary when he saw Peter Duncan pull Amy Brown's hair .. he told the teacher. Bad ass.
3. Oh, but we see him fight in Jedi .. and that went well!? He misses Luke at point blank range, shoots a rope (when apparently armed with an arsenal of cool stuff - oh but he wanted Luke alive .. after trying to shoot him with a blaster???) and flies into the side of a barge after being hit by a blind guy within arms reach? He couldn't defeat a blind guy at arm's reach .. the blind guy didn't even know he was there .. and Boba still lost.
He's still as useless as the white crayon. He's only cool because we say he is. Why do we say he is? Because we want him to be. Why do we want him to be? Because over the years we have built our own stories using the architecture of our own interests and experiences.

Rogue One... where we find out how many Bothans make up "many Bothans"... maybe...
Yeah, I wonder how they're going to work that in? Do the Rogue's inspire the nation of Bothania to rebel against their Imperial masters in order to overthrow the government, create chaos and allow the Rogue's to acquire the plans?
Rogue One... where we find out how many Bothans make up "many Bothans"... maybe...
Wrong Death Star. Rogue One is about stealing the plans for the DS I (just before A New Hope). The "Many Bothans died..." refers to getting the location of the construction of the DS II (Return of the Jedi).
No Bothans dying in Rogue One.
Jim
Huh... learn something new every day. I always thought that bit about the Bothans was from the first one...
Mon Matha wasn't even in ANH.... and she's the one who says it!

Still could be Bothans involved on the fringe here as well, you can't be sure.
But not playing the major part, as this will obviously Rogue one team do. Will Disney allow for some heroic death scenes for the team members?
And, actually Palpatine outsmarted the Bothans.
Pre yavin the rebellion was mostly humans the filthy aliens were too cowardly to risk the wrath of the glorious imperial navy.
