Getting the most out of your Tractor Beam (pre-Imperial Veterans)

Could you push someone off of the defined space?

Could you push someone off of the defined space?

Sadly, as it currently stands we can't. The barrel roll rules say you can't go into an obstacle or off the board. The tractor beam rules say obstacles are fair game, but they don't over-rule the second half.

But that doesn't stop you from tractor beaming a ship into a position where next turn it has no choice buy to fly off the edge of the map! ;) of course that's a lot harder to set up.

Have played it on Vrill and really liked the option to use it, particularly if it was at R3 vs an unstressed target... admittedly he's not in a great spot PS wise these days though.

Vrill isn't in a terrible spot, at least he gets simultaneous fire with the new elephant in the room, Uboats.

U-boats are my concern, and why I'm not 100% sure I'd go with a tractor beam, even once Imperial Veterans *is* out. I wish it had worked like ion - you can build up to an effect on a 'large' ship, it just takes multiple shots.

As it is, last several 'major' (30+ player) events I've been to, half my matches were against 'large' bases. U-boats the most popular, but also a heck of a lost of Ghosts (to whom a tractor beam does literally nothing at all), Decimators, etc.

I had fun with the following Scum semi-swarm list

TPV (M3-A) with Juke and Tractor Beam

TPV (M3-A) with Juke and Tractor Beam

Palob with Dorsal Turret

Black Sun Soldier with Concussion Missile

Black Sun Soldier with Adv. Homing Missile

All PS5 and 3. Use the Z to block and get TL, Palob to stole the token so Juke on TPV proc. TB to mess up the enemy's formation. Z-95 would K-turn and use their ordnance. Sending Vader and Inquisitor onto a rock is pretty fun.

I find TB is expecially useful versus TLT/Stress Y-wings and Kwings, because

- you're very likely to hit, so you can plan your movement around being able to tractor the target

- they rely on range when shooting, especially Tactician TLT K's

- they are low PS

- they have so much hull that getting them into a bad position is worth more than doing 1-2 points of damage

- they have poor dials, so have a hard time recovering from bad positioning

I find TB especially useful if your squad includes many ships. That way, the damage lost when tractoring instead of doing a standard attack is "regained" when you get to have several attacks against an opponent with lowered agility and maybe in range 1.

In addition, SOMETIMES your TB-equipped ship will be in a position to tractor an enemy into an asteroid, off the board (more precisely, into a position where any movement in the next round = off the board). This can trip up a ship like Poe or Miranda and win you the game.

TB is, unfortuantely, underwhelming against Aces and large base ships, and these are the most common types of ship you see today. And this makes it (terrible words):

UNRELIABLE AND INCONSISTENT!!!!

So it's mostly worth taking if you really have a free cannon slot and free points. Building a roster around it is not necessarily the best idea.
