Gray Poe Pawn (4 Ship Rebel)

By Grayfax, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I have enjoyed flying Poe, Red Ace and Stresshog, but I have been finding that 3 ship Rebel lists are hard to do everything needed. The regen and stress has been really nice, but I realized that I have no way to prevent movement in opponents. So I am now looking at a new list for my table top which includes at least one blocker.

Which in turn led me back to A-Wings. 3 Defence Dice, Evade, Focus, Boost... what's not to like, right? Aside from the actual ship and the canopy looks too large, but I don't make many decisions based on how the ships look, so away we go.

Ok, so I like Poe and will keep him the same way. I then looked at how the Gold Squadron Pilot was performing and I have had times where I really wished I could have shot before opponents. Not worried about being blocked... doesn't hurt this ship one little bit if it happens. Moving up to Gray for PS4.

This means I had to ditch Red Ace, which made me sad, but there was no good way around it.

This left me with 20 points. In Scum, there are a lot of options at 20 points. Not so much in Rebel. I didn't want a Z-95 as the A-Wing is better for potential movement. Well... I don't necessarily want another blocker, but I may not have a choice. And then I looked again through the A-Wings... and looked again at Gemmer Sojan. So, with Chardaan Refit and A-Wing Test Pilot, I can give him Adaptability for a PS boost to 6. He gains agility if in range 1. Ok, so a hunter with fickle defense mods... still... 4 green dice and evade or focus?

Then you start trying to name something... and lots of random thoughts go through your mind... and somehow I ended with Gray, Poe and... Pawns... and laughed and yeah... corny or not, there it was.

Now to learn how to be a better blocker with A-Wings and see if this is where I want to be against a lot of lists or if there are still problems dealing with a lot of them. I've used Z-95s in the past as blockers, but was not satisfied with their movement and action potentials. I like everything the A-Wings can do, but not their attacks. If I have attack support with Stress and high PS with Poe, then adding in a PS 1 blocker and a PS 4 Blocker or PS 6 high speed hunter, it should make things more difficult to target and possibly bring down.
Is there a better way to spend the 20 points that I am missing? Really wanting to fly 4 Rebel ships as 3 is a bit limiting against a lot of lists. Still want high and low PS, and really, don't care about initiative being at both ends of the spectrum.

I think Gemmer has some nice filler roles, but the Chihuahua A-Wing list has won two regionals already, and makes a fine 20 point filler.

Green Squadron Pilot + Adaptability, Title, Crackshot, Chardaan, Autothrusters.

For twenty points you could add a second prototype with prokets and guidance chips. It gives your opponent another threat to think about, and if they ignore it, then its a five dice attack with a focus modifier along with the guidance chip.

I know it isn't quite as blocky as an A-wing, but have you considered using a Z-95 instead? That will give you 25 points to play with. I love Tarn at 25 points.

*edit, nevermind, I wasn't paying attention to the numbers, that will only give you 23 points.

Gemmer's main problem is pretty simple: He has no offense. 2 dice isn't very good, especially in an era of super-Aces and so on.

How about Poe Dameron, the Prototype Pilot with Autothrusters, a Tala Squadron with Homing Missiles and Guidance Chips, and the Grey Stresshog? The Tala gives you high peak damage against a big target, Poe's his usual arc-dodgy self, the A-Wing blocks and lives longer with its ATs, and the Stresshog... is a stresshog.

As for myself, I'm not overly happy about how Stresshog has been performing; but a Grey seems like the best choice. I don't like the autothrusters, but what else is there to do for 2 points? An initiative bid does seem wise to help Poe out.

I'll try these out. I'm still not really liking ordnance on a single ship... makes it too easy to primary so it never fires, especially at the low PS. I also like the Green Arrow Squadron type model of A-Wing, but floating in just one of these might be problematic. My initial thought was tiered blockers. The first A-Wing gets in the way of anything (unless you have to fight for initiative). If I'm flying another one, at similar PS, then I still don't know the boardstate any better, though I can guess just as well and put two in the path. As I'm really wanting blockers, I don't know how often autothrusters would make a difference. It might save a few pot shots from a scattered fleet, but is it worth the two points? I do like it on Poe, as he can reposition slightly to bring this into effect sometimes and helps against turrets a lot.

Hmmm... you know, I could also include a Green Squadron Pilot with Juke and Crackshot. That might be enough of an angry hornet to mess with people... still no autothrusters, but probably would work as well as a "Draw Their Fire" upgrade card. Probably would make the lowly Prototype immortal...
